Pulling up to the Embassy Suites hotel forty-five minutes later, Baylynn doubled parked her car, popped the trunk and retrieved the large Gucci duffle bag before closing the trunk. She rushed inside and gave the receptionist the message along with the bag before rushing back out to her car. After slamming the door shut, she looked in the backseat to make sure Brandi was cool and she was still sleeping peacefully. Letting out a sigh of relief, she pulled back into traffic and drove home.

When she pulled into the driveway, she noticed that a black 2017 Lexus with tinted windows was parked in front of her house. An uneasy feeling suddenly came over her as she got out of the car observing her surroundings. She didn’t see anything out of place but she constantly glanced over her shoulder as she lifted Brandi out of the seat, closed the door and walked quickly towards the house. Unlocking the front door, Baylynn walked inside and was surprised to see her mother and a man sitting on her couch. Her eyes shifted back and forth between the two before she closed the door and taking a seat in the recliner that was next to the side of the couch her mother was sitting on.

“Wassup, Ma and who is this?” she pointed to the well dressed, handsome, cinnamon complexion man sitting next to her.

“Baylynn, this is Charles Mitchell, one of my customers from my past. He’s here…because…well…he wants to find out if you’re really his daughter.” Fateema twiddled her thumbs.

  “What the fuck!” she shouted.

“Look, Bay. I know this is confusin’ right now and I’ll promise that I’ll explain everythin’ when he leaves. I already purchased the home paternity test kit. We can do it now, send it back and just wait for the results,” Fateema quickly stated.

“Naw, ma. Since you’ve been here, you avoided tellin’ me what’s goin’ on with you and now there’s a man sittin’ in my livin’ room that wants a paternity to see if I’m really his daughter. You’re goin’ to tell me what’s goin’ on right now. Either you tell me the truth or I’m not takin’ the test.” Baylynn undressed Brandi from her snowsuit and patted her back so she could continue to sleep.

Fateema looked at Charles before looking back Baylynn. Taking a deep breath, she began to tell her story.

“When I was younger, my mother used our house as a speak easy every weekend and she had a lot of customers. Well, when I was eleven years old, one of her drunk customers stumbled into my room one night and raped me. I tried to tell my mother but she was always too drunk to comprehend anything anyone tried to tell her. I never told anybody and every weekend, that same man came into my room and had his way with me but I made him pay me for it. That went on for three years and the reason it stopped, was because the police raided our house and me, along with my two brothers were placed in foster care and when I thought that I was free from being taken advantage of every weekend, it only continued when I went to live with my new family,” Fateema’s voice cracked.

Baylynn listened attentively to her mother’s story. She was about to tell her to stop but Fateema began to talk again.

“When I turned eighteen, I was out of the system and on my own. They gave me five hundred dollars so I could get a place of my own and look for a job but that wasn’t enough to hold me over. I rented out a room and I had to sleep on the floor because I couldn’t afford a bed and being turned down by too many jobs, I decided that I was goin’ to be a prostitute. When I was twenty, I came across Charles and he turned out to be one of my favorite customers. The money he gave me was enough to get a house, furniture, food and whatever else I wanted. He was my customer for four months and when I found out I was pregnant, I called him to give him the news and he dismissed me. He told me never to call him again and to forget I ever knew him. When he became a judge years later, I was tired of sleepin’ with men for money and the money you were givin’ me wasn’t enough. So, I found him and told him if he didn’t take care of me, I was goin’ to expose him. He’s been givin’ me money for the past five years to keep my mouth my shut and now that his other daughter has found her sister, he wants to know if you’re his daughter as well.” The tears rolled down Fateema’s face.

Baylynn’s heart broke after hearing her mother’s story and learned that her and her mother were more alike than she realized. Her eyes shifted to Charles who was rubbing Fateema’s back. Baylynn couldn’t believe that she had not one but two sisters in the world. She had mixed feelings about everything, including the man that might have been her father.

“So, Charles? Were you in your other’s daughter life or did you stay away from her too?” Baylynn interrogated.

“I was in my other daughter’s life until I decided to be a judge, which was when she turned eighteen. I have a daughter with my wife and daughter with my mistress of almost twenty years. I was there for both of my daughters but I never had my kids around each other out of fear that someone would find out. Being as though your mother had many sexual partners, I didn’t believe that you could be my daughter. I never saw you before today but now that I look at you, there’s a chance that you might be.”

“Have you seen your other daughter?”

“Not since her high school graduation but my daughter showed me a picture of her and my granddaughter. They’re both beautiful.” He smiled.

“So, why do you want to find out if I’m your daughter now?”

“Because I’m trying to right my wrongs, Baylynn. I’m not sure what’s going to be the outcome of this test but if you are my daughter, I would like for us to get to know each other. I can’t turn back the hands of times. I just want to move forward and not neglect my children anymore.”

“If I am your daughter, will I get to meet my sisters? Do they even know that they possibly have another sister?” Baylynn fought back her tears.

“From my understanding, they know about you, they just don’t know who you are. My wife told my daughter the story about Fateema and I’m sure she told her sister by now. They have gotten close over the past few months.”

“Baylynn, are you goin’ to take the test?”

“Yeah because I wanna know for myself and once we find out the results, we’ll take it from there.”

Fateema opened the kit, they swabbed their mouths and placed everything in its proper containers and placed them in the envelope. After checking to see if everything was filled out properly, Charles volunteered to mail it off when he got up to leave.

When he was gone, Baylynn went into the kitchen to see what she wanted for dinner but saw that her mother made dinner already. She made her a plate of mashed potatoes with gravy, fried chicken and collard greens. As she ate her food, Baylynn thought about the events that took place during the day and she was on a true emotional rollercoaster. From Brandi having a moment with Ramsey’s daughter to the drop off to her blackmailer and the icing on the cake, hearing her mother’s story and meeting the man that could possibly be her father had her all over the place. She didn’t know if she wanted to cry, yell or punch a hole in the wall but she kept her composure.

After she finished eating, Baylynn went upstairs to her room, undressed and climbed into bed. Needing for the day to be over as quickly as possible, Baylynn closed her eyes and quickly drifted off to sleep exhausted from the day she had.

A couple of days had passed since his visit with Cashmere and Ramsey still seemed to be stuck in that moment. His mind replayed the conversation he had with his cousin before the visit as well as everything that took place in between but what stuck with him the most was how his baby girl fought to get out of his arms to get to Brandi. It never dawned on him that they would miss each other since they were so young. When he broke up with Baylynn, he never thought about how it would affect Brandi in the long run and by the way they hugged each other, he knew the girls missed each other very much.

Besides the visit, he thought about his hearing that was only a few weeks away. Ramsey wanted to stay positive about the situation but he also wanted to prepare for the worse. Since learning that Baylynn was Manny’s baby mam
a, he thought that Manny would talk some sense into her. Ramsey figured that if he got his goons off her top that Baylynn would do the right thing by telling the truth at his hearing. Ramsey knew that the cops would want her to testify against him but knowing the petty and bitter bitch that she was, he knew not to count on her to do shit for him.

Ramsey had been chilling in cell for most of the morning when he decided to call his brother to get some information about his case and get an update on the family. He nodded to a few of his workers as he made his way to the phones. He spotted his cousin talking to one of the female officers and chuckled to himself. The female officers as well as some of the nurses were always getting involved with the inmates. The inmates would feed them false promises of a future on the outside in order to get favors out them. Although Ramsey had a few female officers and nurses on his top, he paid their asses no mind. His focus was on returning home to his woman and child.

After a waiting a few seconds, Ramsey got on the phone dialed Ryan’s number, waited for the recording to finish before he spoke.

  “Wassup lil’ sis.”

“Hey brother. I’m glad you called me because I have some great news for you,” she beamed.

  “Well, let me hear it.”

“I talked to your lawyer the other day and he informed that everything is going in your favor. With the paper work Randall provided him about the businesses you own and the youth center that you and Randall are in the mix of opening, along with the letters people wrote on your behalf, there is no way that they will be able to keep you. You have a clean record and was never arrested before this so everything is looking great.”

“You just made my day sis. That’s exactly what I needed to hear. I know I shouldn’t care but who wrote letters on my behalf?”

“Me, mom, Randall, Cashmere, Tamia and some high-powered judge,” she answered.

“Damn. How did y’all get a judge to write on my behalf?”

“I don’t know, bro but he did.”

“Y’all don’t know how much I fuckin’ appreciate y’all. I was worried for a minute that I wouldn’t be comin’ home but clearly I was worried for nothin’,” he chuckled. “So, what else is goin’ on out there? How have been?”

“I’ve been great. I started dating someone a few weeks ago and everything is going great so far,” she giggled.

“I don’t know how I feel about that but don’t sleep with him until I come home. I gotta make sure he ain’t no sucka.”

  “Whatever Ramsey,” she dismissed him.

They talked until his time was up and after he hung up the phone, he walked back to his cell where he found officer Gram admiring his pictures in his cell. Officer Phoenix Gram was one of the toughest female officers in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility and the baddest. She was 5’8 with deep and dangerous curves. Her eyes were dark brown and so was her hair that she kept wrapped up in a bun. Even though she wore a uniform, that didn’t do anything but accentuate her fat ass, thick hips and full breast. Every time she would pass Ramsey on the cell block, she gave him a look of disgust and he made sure to stand clear of her whenever he saw her. So, to see her in his cell was confusing to him.

“Can I help you Officer Gram?” he stood in the opening of his cell.

“Your daughter is beautiful. She looks just like you,” she stated dryly.

  “Thank you.”

“I assume that’s your baby mama in all these pictures.”

“Yes, and again, can I help you?”

“I just wanted to come by and tell you that you might not be going to your hearing. There is no evidence incriminating you of the crimes you’re being charged with and the officers you assaulted decided to drop the charges and forget about the whole thing. Plus, there is a judge that thinks very highly of you.” She rolled her eyes. “So, if you stay out of trouble, you will be released in a week or so.”

“Thank you for the news. Now, can I ask you a question?”

  “What?”

“Why don’t you drop the attitude and admit you want this dick.” He stepped closer to her.

“What the fuck are you talking about, inmate?”

“I’m talkin’ about this attitude you got towards me and I didn’t do anythin’ to you and the way you keep starin’ at my dick is a dead giveaway that you want a nigga. So, just admit it?”

Ramsey stared her down with a smirk on his face and by the way Officer Gram was fidgeting with her hands, he knew he read her right.

“Look Miller, you don’t know shit about me and like I said, stay out of trouble so I won’t have to look at your ass anymore.” She bumped him as she walked out of his cell.

Ramsey chuckled to himself as he sat down on his bed and began looking through one of his magazines. Now that he knew that he was going home, he wanted to start putting things in motion for his future on the outside. During his short stay behind them ivory colored cement walls, Ramsey thought a lot about his life and how he wanted it to end. If Baylynn wouldn’t have set him up, he figured that it would only be a matter of time before he caught slipping one way or another and the last place he wanted to be was in jail doing a long bid or dead. He thought of his mother’s words when he was home about him getting married someday and that was something he was looking forward to. Not being able to deny that Cashmere was indeed the woman for him, he decided that he would pop the question as soon as he got the chance. He knew that his family was going to throw him a welcome home extravaganza and he figured that he would bring more joy to the occasion by asking the woman he loved to be his wife. Just thinking about proposing put a smile on his face and he couldn’t wait to see the expression on Cashmere’s face when he popped the question.

Amelia sat on her bed in her apartment counting the stacks of hundreds that she extorted from Baylynn as Meek Mill Check blasted through her Beats by Dre pill speaker. She nodded her head to the music and smiled when she finished counting the money. Her grand total was $135,000 and she was pleased with the come up that she had made off her frenemy. She wanted to get Baylynn for another twenty racks but she knew she couldn’t get it out of her now that she was in the clear. Since Baylynn no longer had a price on her head, Amelia could no longer extort money from her friend.

Amelia was so caught up in her own shit that she didn’t realize that Christmas was a week away. She hated the holidays because she was always alone. When she turned eighteen, she got call from the police telling her that her mother had been attacked at the train station and she had died on her way to the hospital. Amelia wasn’t the same after her mother passed and she handled it by fucking as many men as she could. She thought about her mother often but stopped before the tears could roll down her cheeks.

As she placed the money back in her Nike duffle bag, her phone began to ring. She snatched it off the nightstand and froze when she saw it was Baylynn calling. Besides the text messages she sent her as the anonymous blackmailer, Amelia hadn’t seen or spoken to her since the last time she showed up at Baylynn’s house. Instead of ignoring her call like she wanted to do, she answered the phone.

“Hey girl. I haven’t heard from you in a while. Wassup with you?”

“I was gonna say the same thing to you. My mom brought a Christmas tree and we’re about to go shopping for decorations and gifts. I was callin’ to see if you wanted to join us. I know how you get around this time of year and bein’ as though I had a lot of shit goin’ on with me around Thanksgiving, I figured you would want to be around family.”

  “Baylynn I really---”

“Amelia, I’m not takin’ no for an answer. I want you to spend the holidays with me, my mom and Brandi. It’ll be fun.

“Aight, Bay. I’ll be there by one.”

“Yay! I’ll see you later,” Baylynn beamed.

  “Later.”

Amelia tossed her phone on the bed before walking into the bathroom to take a quick shower. After she was finished in the shower, she pulled out her roll-on luggage and filled
it with clothes for the week. Even though Baylynn didn’t ask her to stay with her, she figured she would stay in a hotel nearby so she wouldn’t be too far away. Being as though she was forced to spend time with a person she no longer cared for, Amelia felt as though she would make the best of the situation since she wouldn’t have to be bothered with Baylynn too much longer.

Once her suitcase was packed, she got dressed in a Maroon fitted hoodie, black tights and a pair of Maroon colored Ugg boots. Grabbing her leather coat from the back of her door with her phone and keys in hand, Amelia rolled her luggage behind her as she walked out of her apartment locking the door behind her. The cold air instantly froze her body as she used her remote to unlock her car doors and pop the trunk. She tossed her suitcase in the trunk slamming it shut before hopping behind the wheel of her car. Amelia started the engine but before she pulled off, she noticed that there was a piece of paper on her front windshield. She quickly snatched the paper off the glass, closed the door and tossed the paper in the passenger seat before pulling out of the parking spot.

Amelia pulled into Baylynn’s driveway an hour and a half later. Killing the engine, she put on her coat before she jumped out the car jogging up the porch steps and into the house trying not to freeze any longer than she needed to.

  “Damn girl. You aight?”

  “It’s cold as shit outside.”

They all laughed as Amelia walked over and hugged Baylynn then her mother.

“Yeah, it is bitin’ outside but I’m glad you made it. We can hit the mall now.” Balynn grabbed her coat while Fateema got Brandi dressed in her snowsuit.

Amelia admired the changes to the house and her jealousy started to get the best of her once again. Instead of hardwood floors, black wall to wall carpet covered the floors. The chestnut colored sectional was replaced with a suede chestnut colored love seat and two matching recliner chairs. The forty-five-inch TV that was mounted on the wall was gone and a seventy-inch smart TV was in its place. The dining room had a glass table with matching chairs along with a glass coffee table with glass in tables on each side of the love seat. Amelia’s jaws were tight as she waited for them to get ready and was the first one out the door when it was time to go.
