In Short Measures

A number of other readers offered comments on these stories following the first reads of Laura and Mary, and I would like to thank them: Annabeth Gish, Daniel Voll and Cecilia Peck (who deserve unique thanks for reasons of which they’re well aware), Annie Robbins, Rick Hawley, Ann LaGravenese, Les Jacobs, and Frank Huyler. Geoff Shapiro gave me invaluable information on the law regarding the situation the protagonists in the second story find themselves in. Finally, I owe Rob and Abby Ruhlman a debt that I will never be able to repay. I’d at least like to thank them publicly, here, for letting me cook for them and their crew at the annual Key West regatta, and leaving me alone all day with many silent hours to write these stories.

Karen Wise copy edited this book and, in doing so, helped me to make changes well beyond the catching of dangling modifiers and misspelled words. I am grateful for her thoughtful work.

Special thanks go to my editor, the fair Nicole Frail, without whose judgment I might have found myself taking long nocturnal car rides along Mulholland Drive, as well as Maha Kahlil and Sam Caggiula, and the many others at Skyhorse who have helped these stories come into being.
