“What did they say about that?”

“They were more interested in the breeder than the Keeper.” The disgust was obvious in Gordon’s tone. “As far as they’re concerned I had a purebred polar bear in these parts heading to the Yukon.”

“What are we going to do about this Keeper?”

“We could call the Guardians and let them deal with him,” Gordon suggested. “He’s their problem.”

“If he gets sent back to the Guardians it’ll be in pieces.” Hugh’s voice had lowered and gone all bear-like again. “He’s threatened our Mate, and he’s a bear. We’ll take care of him.”

River tried not to think too much about what Craig told her earlier. Part of her felt so completely violated, and now she was pissed. They were sitting in the office making decisions for her without asking. The clothes were one thing, but now even that angered her.

The conversation came to an end, which told her they knew she was close. Well, she’d already heard them and would not tolerate being spoken about like that.

Hugh frowned at her when she entered the room after a cursory knock. Gordon looked over his shoulder and smiled at her. “Good evening, River.”

“It was.” She looked past Gordon to Hugh. “Should I leave you to decide my future, or do I get any say in it at all?” Hugh’s expression darkened. So he didn’t like to be called on his behavior. Too bad. “I left a situation where I wasn’t allowed any choices, and I will not stay in another one.”

Gordon stood up and shook his head at River. “Don’t get angry until you hear it all.” A small grin played over his lips. River stepped up and gave him a quick hug.

Hugh growled and she heard his chair scrape back hard against the floor. “Get over it, Hugh. Like I told Boyd, I’m a hugger.” She refused to look back at him and instead focused on Gordon in front of her. “Say hi to your girls for me.”

“That I will.” He pressed a fatherly kiss on her forehead. “Take it easy on your boys.”

She wasn’t in the mood to take it easy on anyone. She was pissed off. “Good night, Gordon.”

He smiled at her and then turned and nodded at Hugh. River almost flinched at the look on Hugh’s face. Where Boyd’s anger was obvious in his reactions, Hugh stood there like a statue, his face an emotionless block of granite. A small tremor danced down her spine at his quiet fury. She could smell the anger radiating off him as well as feel it vibrating the air around them.

“Do you have any idea how possessive bears are, River?”

“I’m learning.” River stood her ground as he prowled around the desk. He looked her over from hair to boots. “Is that what Gavin ordered for you?”

“Yes, but I’m about to go and get my own things if this means the three of you are going to try to control my every waking moment.”

Hugh’s lip curled slightly, and she felt a stab of irrational fear hit her chest. “It pisses me off that you’re still afraid of me.”

“It’s not your fault. I saw a bear attack when I was a kid, and it stayed with me. Rationally I know you won’t hurt me.”

“You’re right. I’ll spank your ass until you come all over my fingers, but I’ll never hit you to hurt you.” He sat down on the corner of the desk and pulled her closer till she was standing between his legs.

She could feel her resolve slipping. “I’m still pissed at you three.”

“I know, and it probably won’t be the last time, but remember we’re only trying to keep you safe.” He dipped his head and pressed a kiss to the sensitive skin under her ear.

“I can take care of myself, Hugh.”

“But you don’t have to anymore. Whatever you want to do, River, the three of us will be there to watch your back.” He wrapped his hands around her waist and then slid them down her hips and thighs until he reached the bottom of her skirt. Her skirt caught on his wrists as he lifted his hands and stroked the cheeks of her ass with his fingers. “I like this so far.”

He traced a finger down the cleft of her ass. Finding the scrap of material there, he tugged gently on it, making her grin. “Did you think I didn’t have any panties on?”

With a quick tug he pulled them down and let them slip down her legs. “You don’t now.” He brought his fingers up and brushed them against the lips of her pussy. “I like knowing I can bend you over at any time and plunge my cock into you.”

River arched her eyebrow and then stepped one leg out of the scrap. She wiggled her foot and bent her knee, lifting her boot up behind her. The scrap of red silk hung off the sharp heel of her boot.

Hugh reached out and snagged the fabric before she could get it. “So I wasn’t the first you came to say hi to?” He rubbed the fabric between his fingers. Considering the kiss Boyd gave her it was no wonder her panties were wet already. “Put your hands on the desk.”

The tone he used went straight to her cunt, creating a deep throb inside her. She did as he asked and he flipped her skirt over her lower back, baring her ass to the door.

  “Is it locked?” she asked.

“Doesn’t matter. If one of my brothers comes close enough to hear this and smell your cream, they’ll break it down.” Hugh rubbed his large hand along her skin, playfully patting her ass cheek.

“Hugh.” She wanted to tell him to stop screwing around. In this position she wanted to feel the bite from his hand. Hell, she could feel herself creaming in anticipation. Instead she closed her mouth, knowing he would probably do the opposite to make a point.

“Clever girl.” Hugh popped her on one cheek, a soft slap that didn’t do much aside from making her skin move. The next smack felt a little harder and a little closer to her clit. She moaned and arched her back, wanting more, silently begging for him to play with her. She felt his fingers brush against her wet pussy, enough to drive up her arousal but not enough to make her come. Two quick slaps landed on her ass and her knees almost buckled.

Hugh flipped her skirt back down over her ass, covering the light sting. She straightened and turned, thinking something was wrong, but Hugh’s lips were curled in a smug grin. At least she could see his cock was hard and straining against the seam of his dress pants.

“Next time, think twice before you hug another man, and don’t think I didn’t smell Cris on you, too. I bet Boyd came after you for that one and that’s why your panties were already wet.”

River wasn’t about to admit it happened exactly how Hugh described. Instead she ran her tongue over her bottom lip. Sure enough, Hugh’s gaze dropped and tracked the movement. “I’ve no problems with finishing what you won’t.”

The ultimatum might not have been her best route, but it was effective. A split second later she felt the wall at her back as Hugh growled against her collarbone. She tilted her hips, hoping to garner some friction against her aching clit, but Hugh held himself a fraction of an inch away.

“Don’t you dare touch yourself. I want you aching and desperate for us. That’s how we feel when you aren’t around. A few hours of anticipation will do you good.”

He lowered her feet to the floor and then opened the door. “Go have some fun. You’re safe here, and tonight you’re coming home with us.”

Dazed, she nodded and kissed him back. She understood what he was doing by letting her hang out in the bar with everyone. It would give her a chance to have some fun, and they would be able to keep an eye on her. He smacked her on the ass and she turned a mock glare in his direction. Putting a bit more sway in her walk was easy since she felt like her pussy was drenched.

Looking over her shoulder, she saw Hugh leaning back against the doorframe to his office. He really was an incredibly sexy man, and the way he unconsciously rubbed his cock as he watched made her sizzle. She made a big deal out of straightening her corset and then she flipped up the back of her skirt and flashed him her bare ass before entering the bar. She heard the low, sexy growl rumble down the hall and she laughed. Good. If I’m horny as hell, he can be in the same shape.

  “One hour, Riv
er, and then I’m coming to get you.” His words were low enough that he must’ve known she would hear him when many wouldn’t over the sound of the music, but she could tune the background noise out and focus on her men. Boyd was at the bar taking orders, and Gavin was speaking to someone on the phone in another part of the building.

During the short time she spent in the office with Hugh, it seemed like the crowd in the bar had tripled. She practically skipped her way out onto the dance floor, seeing Carol and Brenna already out there. Cris put on “Heaven Nor Hell” by Volbeat, which was one of her favorite songs to dance to. The floor filled up, and Sloan, one of Carol’s husbands, jumped in with them.

Sloan was a crazy character, completely in love with Carol, and kept them all laughing with his antics. River quickly forgot everything that hung over her head and enjoyed herself.

The Keeper watched Brittney from his covert place. He would only have one chance at this. The moment he moved from this place his knew his scent would filter through the room. The one at the bar who pawed at her would be his biggest threat. He would notice first and alert the other two.

Brittney flounced around to the music, a completely inappropriate action for one like her. He could smell her arousal from here, along with the scent of at least four different males on her and not all the same species. They all would be destroyed for touching a breeder, but she would pay the price for flouting her duties and abusing herself. There were other foxes out there. Three of them abandoned their duties together, and he was going to make Brittney tell him where they were.

He fingered the remote trigger in his pocket. The natural wave of a floor full of dancers undulated, and he waited patiently for his moment. The group danced and carried on, slowly inching closer to his spot until she danced a few feet in front of him. As the music reached its crescendo, he pressed the remote trigger he had in his pocket.

A series of thumps sounded against the walls outside. That would be a massive flurry of arrows he had set up to go off automatically. Screams and shouting echoed from the balcony and a flood of people rushed inside and down the stairs. The humans’ frenzied and panicked reactions were better than he planned. The acrid stench of fear flooded the building like a smog cloud. One of the bears came out of the back room at a dead run and headed for the front doors. Pandemonium surged and everyone looked up to see what was going on. That was when he struck.

River felt an arm wrap around her shoulders and a hand dig into her neck, cutting off her air as she was jerked back away from her friends. “Alert them, and they’re dead.”

She struggled for a breath to scream, but he didn’t allow it as he backed them toward the emergency exit three feet away. Pushing his body back against the door, he opened it, pulling her out. As the door closed, she heard a trio of roars loud enough to rattle the walls.

“Put me down, motherfucker!” She fought his hold, but he was too strong. It didn’t stop her from thrashing and trying her best to get him off balance.

“I’ve got that place rigged. You’re going to stop, or I’ll kill everyone in there.”

River didn’t know whether to believe him, and when he straddled an ATV and threw her over his legs, she didn’t fight. It wasn’t worth the risk. The engine started, and he took off like a shot. Keeping her pinned against the seat with his knee in the middle of her back, she felt every jolt and bounce against her chest.

“You’re a disgrace to your kind. Dressed like a cheap whore looking to spread her legs for anyone who came near. You should’ve stayed where you were. You were safe there.”

“I was a prisoner,” she snapped. They hit a bump and she swung her legs up hoping to nail him with the spikes on the backs of her heels. His elbow dug painfully into her spine.

“You had a mate chosen for you. One as purebred, who would’ve blessed you with children who would’ve continued your species.”

“A Mate? He was no mate. He was my brother, you inbred fucktard. I have three Mates.”

“But you chose to spit on your destiny, and then you try to sully my species by taking not one but three lovers. You all will die for your blasphemy and any abomination you carry inside your twisted body. You don’t smell like you carry life, but I’ll know for sure in a few days. Regardless of the mix I’ll tear it from your body and destroy it.”

Fear struck River in the chest at the thought. She did the math and felt a moment of relief. It was almost impossible for her to be pregnant right now. The idea of being a mother didn’t frighten her. It was the prospect of losing a child to this monster.

If he planned to keep her for a couple days, then she had time to escape or be found. Reaching up under the skirt, she tore out a section of her silk teddy and let it drift away. The farther they travelled she tore off pieces of the lingerie underneath and let them drift from her fingers.

He bounced over a riverbed, and the water splashed up, soaking her fingers. She managed to get a chunk ripped off and dropped it on the riverbank where they drove out.

She needed to stay alive until they found her. The idea of allowing this sick bastard to touch her made her ill, but she would survive it and spit on his corpse when her Mates were finished with him. And they would come for her. She knew it deep in her soul, where the three of them now lived, in her heart, a part of her. She couldn’t imagine life without them.

The Keeper dug his elbows into Brittney’s spine and his cock twitched at her grunt of pain. He contemplated her ass where it hung off his legs. She apparently liked his species. Perhaps he would teach her some manners before taking her back to the compound.

Her feet swung upward against his body again, almost jabbing the metal into his arm. “That’s enough.”

He stopped the vehicle and she immediately started fighting him again, swinging fists at his face as she tried to pull herself away from him. The moment he let go of her she would be gone, and that he couldn’t allow. He swung the thrashing female up across his shoulders and gripped her wrist to her leg at his chest. That restricted her movements somewhat and allowed him to start the ATV up again. He took off down the road. A split second later he heard a crash, and a massive grizzly bear burst out from between the trees behind him and gave chase.

“You’re fucked when he gets here.” Brittney spat at his face. He glanced in his rearview mirror and noticed he’d already put some space between them. He gunned the engine and flew down the road. Even she wouldn’t be stupid enough to jump at this speed, and the way she was gripping his shirt proved that.

“See, one of your species could’ve kept up, but that bear never had a chance. We’re built for power, not for speed.”

“Oh, yeah,” she whispered, and then took a deep breath and screamed loud and high. Pain reverberated through his head, and his ears felt as if white-hot pokers had been jabbed into them. He involuntarily jerked the handle, lost control of the vehicle, and then felt himself flying through the air. He tried to hold on to her but lost his grip when he hit the road.

Boyd watched in horror as the four-wheeler lost control, flipping up in the air like an explosion had gone off under it. River and the driver were thrown wildly into the air. His heart felt like it was going to explode, but all he could see was River’s body hurled toward a large oak tree. Time slowed down, and he had a moment where he almost fell to the ground in agony at the thought of losing her.

He shouldn’t have underestimated her, because a moment before impact, she shifted. A shock of red fur missed the tree. Tangled up in the corset, it flew past and landed in the brush on the other side. Hugh burst through the trees to the left, and the Keeper shifted in a blink, his large body absorbing the brunt of the impact.

The large grizzly bear the Keeper shifted into lurched up and shook his head and then roared at Hugh. The two of them snarled and howled at each other before the Keeper lunged at Hugh’s neck. A black bear circled around them. That was Gavin, but
he wouldn’t interfere unless Hugh was beaten, and Boyd didn’t believe that would happen. This fucker dared to hurt their Mate. Hugh was going to tear him a new one.

Lumbering behind the large tree, he followed his Mate’s scent. The leather corset she’d been wearing lay in the underbrush and inside was a ball of shockingly red fur. He nudged the fox with his nose, but it didn’t move. Panic tore through him. Not caring that there was a bear fight going on a few meters away, he shifted into human form and scooped her out of the corset.

Keeping one eye on the fight, he backed away with the bundle against his chest. Gavin bounded over and positioned himself between them and the fight. Gavin’s big head swung back and forth between the fight and Boyd.

“She’s breathing, and I can feel her heartbeat,” Boyd told his brother as he stroked the soft fur. She didn’t smell of blood or the metallic tang of an injury. “I think the impact knocked her out.”

Hugh and the other bear crashed through the trees and Gavin backed up closer to Boyd. “Yeah, I see. It won’t be long now.” They both saw the end coming. He and his brothers often play-fought, and that gave Hugh the advantage.

The bundle in his arms started to shake, and he held her closer to his chest. “Hey, precious, you’re safe. I’ve got you.” There was a particularly nasty snarl and growl and thud as the two bears fought. He and Gavin had moved back far enough to make sure that she was safe.

Gavin sniffed up at her, and River lifted her head for the first time. Boyd grinned and stroked her gently between her ears. “Are you hurt, baby? If you want to shift, we’ll keep you safe.”

Gavin rubbed his muzzle against her small body and Boyd felt her tremors calm. He crouched down and gently placed her on the ground between Gavin’s paws. Gavin hunched over her and placed his neck over her body, practically hiding her under his fur. Only her nose poked out, and the scent of fear almost completely disappeared. Sensing what their mate needed, he shifted back into his bear form and crowded his brother, making certain River felt safe hidden away between them.
