Rogues Journey

Phil unlocked their chains and gave Oscar his sidearm as Oscar asked, “How long before another guard comes to relieve you or check on us?”
“Each watch is set up for four hours, and my relief is due in two and a half hours. There won’t be any random checks,” Phil explained.
Amy asked, “Phil, are you with us? We plan to take control back from Liz and go back to the original vision of what Tony set up that we all pledged to support. Are you in or out?”
“I’m in. Tell me what to do,” Phil said with conviction.
Oscar opened the door enough to see that there weren’t any guards around. The others followed him out the back of the warehouse to the Auto Parts warehouse were his office was located. Liz hadn’t yet told the people that Tony had been murdered by Oscar, Amy, and Max.
They only met a few people on the way to Oscar’s office, and those people just welcomed Amy and Max back. They all were concerned for Amy due to the kidnapping.
They walked in the back of the warehouse and saw Jackie was walking toward Oscar’s office when Oscar said, “Jackie, come over here.”
She ran to Oscar, smothered him with kisses, and asked, “How did you escape? Come on in the office. We were just planning your escape.”
When they walked into the room everyone’s jaws dropped, “How did you escape?” Jackie asked.
Amy answered, “Phil, helped us and is loyal to our cause. We need to get an army together to stop Liz before she tells her lies to the community.”
Bob replied, “We are ahead of you on that. We have contacted everyone we trust, and we think most of the community is on our side. The one question that they want us to answer before they go to war for us is who will lead us in the future and how will we avoid another dictatorship?”
“I think there is an easy answer. Oscar will become leader in the community that we established. Neighborhoods that don’t want to live under our rule can do whatever they want as long as they don’t attack us,” Max replied.
Oscar jumped to his feet. “Hell no. I don’t want the headaches. Max you or Bob should be our leader and let me continue to run security.”
Bob quickly said, “Oh, hell no. I don’t want to be the leader. Looks like Max is our new leader. Everyone in favor, raise their hands.”
Max informed them, “I’ll do it but only until we can figure out a long term plan.”
Amy kissed Max and asked, “Boss, what do we do now?”
Max began barking out orders, “We have to capture Liz alive to conduct a trial before executing her. Oscar, get all of your men ready to march on the new queen in one hour. Bob, Sam, and Greg. Get everyone armed and we’ll storm the main headquarters at exactly 7:30. That should be before they know we are missing.”
“Sam, get a couple of sharpshooters and be prepared to take out any of Liz’s supporters who try to escape. I don’t want us to be looking over our shoulder for the rest of our lives.”
Amy went to one of the lockers in Oscar’s office and handed Max body armor, two Glock 17s with three-31 round magazines each, and a bayonet. Amy said, “I don’t want my new fearless leader to get shot on his first day in office.”
Amy and Oscar put their body armor on and took the same weapons and magazines.
Everyone was in place, Max insisted on leading the charge into the office with Amy and the rest right behind him. He stopped outside the door and yelled, “Liz, we have the place surrounded. Give up, and you will live. Fight, and we will kill all of you.”
Then Max said to Amy, “I’ll take the right side of the room, you take the left. Try not to kill the bitch.”
There was no answer so from the room, so Oscar kicked the door open, and Max went in first with Amy an arm’s length behind him. As he entered, one of Liz’s guards raised his pistol and fired at Max but was too late. Max’s bullet struck as the man pulled his trigger. Max’s shot killed the man instantly, but the guard’s bullet hit the body armor knocking Max down.
Amy cleared the doorway and began shooting at anything that moved. She hit two of the men before she was hit in the chest. It hurt like hell, but she had steeled herself to the fact that she would be hit.
“Son of a bitch that hurts,” Max yelled as he got up and swung both Glocks toward Liz. She fired first knocking Max down again. She aimed at his head to finish him off; however, Amy shot both of her pistols at Liz. Amy continued firing as Liz bounced against the wall, bullets ripping through her body. Amy felt the sting of a bullet in her right forearm. Then she was knocked unconscious by a ricochet that had hit her on the back of the head. She fell to the grimy, blood-smeared floor.
Max continued to shoot the Glocks until they were empty. He had felt the bullets strike his chest through the body armor, but he was too pumped up to let them stop him. He didn’t feel the last bullet strike his leg, either. When it was over, he stood there blinking for a moment. Then he saw Amy on the floor and hobbled over to her as Oscar, Bob, and Sam rushed in to assist him.
Max looked down at the red stain spreading over his leg and slumped to the ground. Oscar called for the medics, and they took Amy out on a stretcher before tending to Max. Meanwhile, the others searched for Liz’s supporters and guards. Sam killed three of the co-conspirators and Oscars men rounded up and executed the rest. The coup was over, and Max was the new leader of the Community.
An hour later, Max lay in the recovery room wondering how a dumb science fiction writer had become the leader of a gang of crooks, policemen, misfits, and a beautiful female mob assassin.
He gazed over at the woman he loved. Amy lay in the next bed, her head wrapped in bandages, her arm in a cast, and IV tubes poking out of her arm. Oscar came into the room and said, “Doc says Amy will survive but won’t wake up for a day or two. She has a broken wrist and a gouge on the back of her head but is okay otherwise. You have a bullet wound in your leg and a bunch of bruises on your chest, but it looks like you’re going to make it.”
Max reached over and took Amy’s hand in his. Knowing her heart would now be his forever; he smiled at no one in particular and said aloud, “I’m just lucky I guess.”

I was born in Eight Mile, Alabama not too far from The University of South Alabama. I played football and baseball in high school but was never great at sports. I joined the Army after high school and became a mechanic and worked at several base motor pools around the country. I eventually became a Seargent over maintenance of light vehicles. I now live in northern Alabama and own a small auto repair shop close to Muscle Shoals. My interests are fishing, hunting, and hiking with my girlfriend, Jill, and of course writing excellent science fiction novels.
