Entangled Chaos (Entangled Duet Book 1)

The car in front of me lurches forward and races through the intersection. Effortlessly, I whip my car into the other lane and step on the gas as I fly past them and run the next three red lights.

Pulling into the parking lot, I skip empty spaces and park directly in front of the club. The bouncers and valet parkers are gone. It’s like a fucking ghost town.

KAI: where are you? I’m out front.

My text to Dahlia goes through saying it was delivered, but I get nothing more than that. Keeping the message open, I wait for the three dots or something; anything.

I sit in silence, staring at the bright screen for a few minutes as the panic slowly builds. She should be out here by now, especially since this place is virtually empty now.

Leaving my car running, I grip my phone in my hand as I quickly get out. Marching toward the front door, a girl slips out before I get to it.

  Tierney.

“Hey, Kai...” she says hesitantly as she takes in my expression. “What’s going on?”

“Where’s Dahlia?” I demand as I try to look past her through the blacked-out windows.

Tierney’s brow furrows as she looks at me confused. “I thought she was with you?”

  Fuck.

Unlocking my phone, I recheck my messages. Nothing.

My face falls flat as I give her a hard stare. “How long ago did she leave?”

Tierney frowns as she glances around nervously. “Not long, only like five or ten minutes ago, maybe?”

“Did she say anything to you?”

Frowning, she shakes her head. “All that she said was that she was going to go wait for you outside and went out back.”

Cutting my eyes at her, I cock my head to the side as my hands curl into fists at my sides.

“Why did she go out back?” I demand. She was supposed to meet me out front, never out back.

  Tierney shrugs. “She didn’t say.”

“Fuck!” I bark and unlock my phone again and search through my apps.

“Is something wrong?” Tierney asks urgently with her voice laced with worry. “Is Dahlia in trouble?”

Pressing on the Find my Friends app, I scroll to her name and tap it. My hands shake in a rage as her location shows up.

  What the fuck?

Spinning on my heel, I rush back toward my car as Tierney runs after me.

“Kai! Wait!” she calls out. “What’s going on?”

Pulling open my car door, I pause and swallow hard over the lump in my throat. “Tierney,” I start slowly. “Now is when you mind your own business and let me take care of this.”

Her jaw drops and her eyes widen as I quickly drop down into the car and slam the door shut. As I put the car in drive, Tierney’s small hands pound on the window.

  Fuck, she’s relentless.

Impatiently, I crack the window and give her enough space to talk.

“I just need to know, is she okay?”

Glancing over, I meet Tierney’s worried eyes peering through the crack in the window. “I don’t know,” I admit quietly and put the window back up as Tierney takes a step back, wrapping her arms around herself.

Peeling away from the club, I head back onto the road.

I drive to the other side of town, in the opposite direction of my place and Dahlia’s.

Pulling into the driveway, I stare at Aliana’s house, confused as fuck and force myself out of the car for some answers.

  Dahlia

GRAVEL CRUNCHES UNDERNEATH the tires as the car slows and comes to a stop. Unable to see, I hear the engine cut off and feel the weight on the seat beside me shift. Turning my head to the side, the black silk hood is ripped off and the bright sunlight burns my eyes.

Blinking rapidly, my surroundings come into focus as my eyes adjust to the blinding light.

My body tenses as the air is stolen from my lungs. My heart pounds against my ribcage, fracturing the bones with every beat.

It’s been ten years, but not much has changed except age. The buildings are abandoned and rundown and slowly falling apart.

The barn stands upright with broken windows and crumbling holes in the walls. Inside, it is as empty as the pens that surround it.

Across the driveway and the yard sits a large Victorian-style house. It’s in poor condition, but it’s the same house from my memories. Like a picture torn from an antique photo album, the house is frozen in time.

  I’m frozen in time.

Slowly scanning the property, I see him move out of the corner of my eye. Turning to the man beside me, his dark sinister eyes swallow me whole.

Luca’s smile is wide as he watches the color drain from my face.

He brought me back to where it all started.

  “Welcome home, princess.”
