It’s time to go to school. We get up from the bench. Hazel does a detour to check out Leo’s graffiti on the wall.
‘Hey, over here,’ she calls. We backtrack over to the graffiti wall.
‘Check this out,’ Hazel says, pointing. There’s a lot of graffiti up there. It’s a while before I see it, next to Alec’s picture of Barney. It’s Cricket! I know as soon as I see it. He’s captured the way she often has one ear up and one down. She’s leaping in the air, and under her is a caption: You make my heart leap!
He’s done it just for me. Without me even trying, without me being somebody other than who I really am. Which makes it feel even more like a gift.
‘Looks like there’s a new graffiti artist around here,’ Hazel says.
They all look at me, grinning. We link arms. The four of us. And we’re still linking arms when we walk into the school gates. Together.
