“Dominic? He did this? Where is he?”
“He had other business. With someone who isn’t in the business of stealing from him.”
“That…” I cut myself off and forced my voice to a level calm. “I did not steal from Dominic.”
Manny gestured across the lot and a large truck pulled up behind his car. The two thugs with him went to the truck and opened the back.
It was a tossup which made me more furious, that Dominic had stolen my supplies, or that he implied I’d stolen from him. And to send a despicable fuck like Manny to deal with me. I stalked over to the truck.
The two men opened up a few of the boxes, allowing me to see the missing computers. A pile of high end laptops, modems, large flat screen monitors. I turned to Manny’s henchman.
“There’s half a million dollars worth of computer hardware in there. DataCom needs those supplies by tomorrow, noon, or we’ll lose one of our biggest accounts.”
He shrugged. “Mr. Gavini’s just taking back what’s his.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Gravel crunched under my shoes as I made my way to him, a satisfying sound, like snapping bones.
“Well, at least he didn’t fill the truck with rats.”
I wanted to grab Manny by his flesh peddling collar and fling him up against his car hard enough to make his teeth rattle, but I didn’t. His men would have drawn guns faster than I could get near him.
“That wasn’t me. I didn’t steal the lumber from that shipment, and I didn’t put the rats in the truck.”
“Mr. Gavini feels differently.”
“Oh, he does, does he? But he didn’t have the guts to come here and tell me himself?”
“Careful, Davros. The Boss is getting tired of your temper. Besides, there are alternatives to losing your supplies.”
“What alternatives?”
“Mr. Gavini will give you your supplies. All you have to do is pay him back for the lumber you stole.”
I pealed my lips back in a livid smile. “I don’t steal. That’s my father’s department. I prefer more upfront tactics.”
“Yes, we know what you do to people who piss you off. That carwash blowout was a messy one.”
“If Dominic will cool his shit for a minute, I can find out who stole that shipment. Look, someone else is trying to sabotage him, and expose someone in his circle as a rat. Taking down my businesses won’t stop it.”
In reality, I’d use the time Dominic gave me to find out who that agent coming to the summit was, and discover the identity of the rat. After leaving Anika, I’d spent all morning looking for the agent, but even with David’s prior years in the FBI, he and I turned up nothing.
“No. No more chances, Davros. Buy back your computers. Pay Mr. Gavini his money by this evening, or Datacom gets its supplies courtesy of the Gavini family.”
No way was I bowing to Dominic. That kingpin was a master extortionist. If I gave into him, I’d be showing weakness. If I did that, he’d only be back next week with a new way to squeeze more money out of me. Not to mention, I’d never hear the end of it from my father. I couldn’t capitulate to Dominic, but I needed a plan.
I took a subtle look around the warehouse property. Too many people around, and the inside of the two-floor warehouse was full of trucks being loaded and unloaded. I’d have to be careful. For now, Dominic would have to think I was giving in. He’d see different later.
“Meet me here this evening, Manny.”
“You’d better have the money, Davros.”
I stepped back toward my car. “Just be here.”
When the men got in the Rolls and drove off, I turned to my own driver, waiting by my car. “David, do me a favor. I want as many men as you can spare looking for that agent.”
“On it.” He opened the door, let me into the car, and then got in, starting the vehicle. “What about your meeting with them this evening, sir? What do you need me to do?”
“Not sure yet. We’ll talk about it later.”
“Right.” He opened his mouth to say more, but stopped, looking at a tablet he’d picked up from the seat next to him. “Shit.”
“What?”
He handed me the tablet over the seat. “We have a problem, sir.”
I glanced at the screen. An image of articles about Gala were in cascade mode on the screen. My teeth clenched. “Damn. Who’s computer is this?”
“It’s Franchesca Hernandez’s laptop, sir. She’s on a heck of a digging expedition.”
Jesus Christ. Anika’s friend. I couldn’t decide which was worse, that Anika and her friend were digging into mine and Gala’s personal lives, something a woman could never be allowed to do to a man with my affiliations, or that she was getting a friend, someone I didn’t know, to help her. She was breaking about a hundred of my rules in the process.
“Fuck. Did they figure it out, David?”
“Not by the looks of what they brought up here. Freddy says it didn’t seem like they knew by what he heard through the bug I put on her this morning.”
Relief cooled my blood and I nodded. Part of me wanted to handle this like a normal, loving boyfriend, or as normal as a man in a relationship like ours could be. To sit my sweet Anika down and give it to her straight, that she couldn’t go nosing into places her man had told her to stay out of. She was trying to understand a life and rules that were still new to her. The other part, the part that knew the dangers of being too lenient for a man like me, wanted to rain destruction on her perfect little ass until she couldn’t sit for a week. It felt like the good and the bad man—the future kingpin I refused to become, and the man I wanted to be for her—were at war in my head, fighting over who would handle her. I hated that I wanted the kingpin to win.
“Where are they, David?”
“Still at that coffee shop downtown.”
“Take me there, now.”
The limo sped toward downtown New York. It seemed Dominic and his men weren’t the only ones about to be taught a lesson.

I left the restaurant with Fran just after noon, when her shift was about to start. At the doors to the hospital, she hugged me close, and the longing to tell all pulled hard at me. I hated hiding things from her, but especially this. Especially Kane.
“If he ever hurts you, you come straight to me, okay? I’ll clean his clock.”
I chuckled sadly, knowing that would be a losing fight. “I love you, Fran.”
She squeezed me close and kissed my forehead. “Love you, too.”
When she pulled away, someone bumped into us, and I nearly toppled into her. I looked around, biting back a retort for the man’s rudeness, but froze. It took me a moment to realize where I’d seen him. He’d been in the coffee shop with us, reading the paper and using a laptop. The way he looked back at me sent alarm slithering down my spine.
“Anika? You ok?” Fran looked from the man, to me, and then back to him again as he walked across the street.
“Yeah. It’s nothing. You’d better get to work before Speros gets on your ass.”
“Okay. Call me later.”
I nodded. As soon as she was gone, I hurried outside, searching the street for the man in the expensive grey suit. Something about the way he moved reminded me of a protection detail. Almost like David.
The notion hit me hard and fast, and I clenched my fists. “You have got to be kidding me. Ugh, Davros, you…” I caught myself about to curse him out loud and silenced, glancing around. No one seemed to notice. I marched outside, meaning to get a cab. And nearly ran right into Kane’s limousine.
“Going somewhere, angel?” Kane smirked, leaning against his car, arms crossed.
“You—”
He rose a finger discreetly and cast his eyes around the street in warning. I silenced again. He moved aside and David opened the door. “In. Now.”
When I stood in place, his smirk turned into the coldest look I’d ever seen from him. My heart gradually quickened at the promise of retribution
in that look. How he knew what I’d been doing, I didn’t know, but he did. Knees weak, unsure if it was with anticipation or trepidation, I sighed and slid into the back seat of the car with him.
“Were you seriously having me tailed?”
“Yes.” Once David closed the door, Kane took out his laptop and opened it, as casually as if I hadn’t caught him surveilling me.
“David, the Lion’s Head, please.” Once the car was moving, he looked at me. “Are you going to tell me what you discussed with Fran, or do I have to show you?”
I licked my lips. There was no point in trying to lie to him. I wished I knew why the threatening aura radiating from him made my pussy wet, as much as it made my blood run a little cold.
“Kane, for God sake, you expect me to tell you everything about me, about my life, but you won’t tell me anything about yours. You shut me out, and expect me to just accept things no self respecting woman would accept.”
“Yes. Yes, I do, Anika, because you have to.”
“You have to give me something. I won’t be your whore.”
“Damn it, you aren’t my whore. Don’t talk like that.”
“Then tell me!”
“No!”
“Why? If you would just tell me the truth, I wouldn’t have to—”
Kane snapped the laptop shut so fast it sounded like a firecracker going off and I jumped. He fisted my hair, and the sting of pain made me curse. Adrenaline raced through me.
“Obviously, you still have no idea how this works, angel. I would never push you further than you can handle, but you need to learn your place.”
Learn my place. Oh my God. I wanted to be mad at him, to hurt him, but part of me also screamed for him to show me exactly who was master. I needed him to, as much as he wanted to.
“When we get to the hotel, I’m going to introduce you to a new level of pain. Believe me, you won’t make the same mistake again.”
I opened my mouth to say something, some rebuttal that would get him to release me and allow me to regain a measure of control, but he yanked my head back and put his mouth close to my ear.
“I think you’ve said enough. You want to make this worse, keep talking.”
“No. No, I’m shutting up now.”
“Good. I will not have you put us in danger.”
“But I didn’t. I was careful.”
“Not careful enough.” He opened the laptop and made me look at the screen, where images of Gala overlapped.
“How…?”
“It doesn’t matter how. If I was able to see what Fran saw, Dominic could. You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“You’re right, I don’t. They’re just pictures of Gala. Just tell me—”
“No. You don’t get to ask anything of me. I say, you do. Is that clear?”
“Kane, I can’t see all the pieces on the board. How do you expect me to play by the rules if I don’t see the whole picture?”
“There is only one rule, Anika. You do what I tell you.” His fingers dug into my scalp. “Do you understand me?”
“Ow. Yes. Fuck. What are you going to do to me?”
“You’ll see soon enough.”
In a few minutes, we’d arrived at the underground lot of the hotel. Kane led me up to the suite, and once inside, he locked the doors, pocketing the card. I bit my lip, never before having felt so closed in with him. He loomed over me, a huge, hungry animal that wanted all my lust, my pain. I backed down the three steps to the main floor, but it was more to get a handle on myself than out of fear. My heart hammered, my head spinning with that intoxicating rush only he gave me when he got like this.
“What are you going to do to me?”
“Get undressed.”
“Are you going to fuck me?” My voice shook. No, he looked too menacing for that. He wanted something much darker.
“I think you know the answer to that. That comes later. Clothes. Off.” He advanced on me, menacing, powerful, perfect badness.
“My ass still hurts. You can’t whip me again.”
“Oh, I won’t. I told you, there are other ways to make you howl.” He grabbed the front of my lacey shirt. “A woman can not go prying into a man’s life when he sets it off limits. I told you to back off.”
“Okay, I won’t go looking anymore. I—”
“You’re right, you won’t.” He spun me around and with one jerk of his hands, tore my shirt open down the back. I cursed and flailed, more out of humiliation than anything else, and he rushed me across the room, shoving me onto the couch, face down.
“Ah! Kane!” His hand yanked my pants open while the other shoved my cheek into the leather couch. “Please don’t touch my ass…”
“I won’t. But I need you naked for this lesson, girl. And since you won’t shut up…” He shoved a cloth into my mouth and I groaned, half anger, half helplessness. “Money makes people silent, but even I can only explain so much.” He tore my clothes off, every stitch.
When I was naked, he got off me, but before I could do anything more than scramble to my feet, he rushed across the room, opened a small closet in a corner, and pulled out two lengths of chain. Each one had a metal shackle hanging off the end. My eyes widened.
“I’m not going to hit you with them.” He kicked a chair in front of the wide window away, and slipped the chains onto small hooks in the ceiling I hadn’t noticed before. The other ends left the shackles dangling down a foot above head level. Kane pulled me over and ignored my twisting, cuffing my wrists so that my arms were spread out above my head.
In a moment, he had me stretched out before him, every inch of my nakedness bared to him, giving him full access to all of what was his. My face heated, knowing I was also exposed to anyone who might look into the window from the buildings across the street.
“So perfect. So luscious.” He ran his palms over the generous mounds of my breasts, thumbing my nipples, smiling when they beaded obediently under his touch. When I closed my eyes, pushing my breasts into his palms, he trailed his hands down my front, over my hips, slipping his fingers between my legs where my wetness revealed exactly what it was he did to me. “I love how wet you get for me, angel.”
Eyes rolling back under the wave of need, I groaned, unable to rein it in. It didn’t matter what he did to me, I’d love it, and there was no way to hide it. The thought made me want to thrash him, even while it made me want to please him.
“Stay right there.” He smirked when I twisted, and crossed the room, taking out a strange looking pair of clamps and what looked like a tiny vibrator. I whimpered, twisting my wrists, but the shackles held fast, the cold steel keeping me where he wanted me.
Once he returned, Kane held up the clamps. “Do you know what these are, Anika?”
I shook my head.
“They’re nipple clamps. They don’t cause any permanent damage, but they hurt like a bitch.”
I closed my eyes, nipples bunching in anticipation, pointing toward him as if in obedience, betraying me. Fuck, my body had no loyalty to me, I swear. I let out a shaky moan.
“And this.” He held up the tiny vibrator. “A clit vibrator. This doesn’t hurt, but it puts control of your pleasure in my hands.” He showed me a small remote.
Instinctively, my thighs pressed together, even while my clit ached. Kane strode over to me and kicked my feet apart.
“Nope. Legs spread. No hiding from me.”
I wouldn’t kid myself. This wasn’t a game. He wasn’t my Dom anymore. He was the Mafia man who had to set straight a woman who’d crossed a line. A dangerous line. I’d done something I shouldn’t have, but the danger went further than nosing where I shouldn’t. I didn’t get it, not fully, but I knew it to be true now. Odd, there was a level of protection in his actions, in the way he promised not to push too far. That only made me hotter, and more confused. He was going to hurt me. Really hurt me, and I needed it. Wanted it. I needed him to show me he was in control, that he knew what was best for us both. What the fuck was wro
ng with me?
Bending down, he ran his fingers over my moist folds and carefully fastened the little vibrator onto my throbbing clit. A shaky breath escaped from around the gag and I tried to pull away, but he grabbed my hip, straightened and fastened one of the clamps onto my nipple.
The pinch made me wince at first, but then he turned a small knob and the pain intensified until I let out a tiny squeal. The pain went right from the tip of my nipple all the way to my pussy.
“Good?”
I let out a livid growl around the gag. He fastened the other clamp onto the other nipple, then tightened the tension. The fresh bolt of pain had me squirming and whimpering. My eyes watered.
“You like that?” He pushed my hair out of my face. I twisted my head away. “I know.” False empathy oozed from his deep voice. “I know how you feel. All exposed like this.”
Exposed. The emphasis on the word was clear.
“You want to dig into my life and expose things that aren’t your business, you’re going to see what it’s like to be exposed.”
He flicked a button on the remote for the vibrator. The vibrator buzzed to life, and the ache between my legs intensified three-fold. My clit felt like it was being tweaked by an eager finger, and I bucked, groaning loud. Waves of pleasure rocked through me, and every time I writhed, the clamps on my nipples jostled, turning the sting there to an agonizing throb.
A moment later, Kane switched off the vibrator. It stilled and I slumped, the chains rattling. Breathing hard, I shook my head at him, hoping he understood. I wouldn’t break his rules anymore. I was on his side.
He grabbed my hair, pulling my head back, adding another layer of pain to my misery. My arousal. “I don’t think you’ve learned your lesson just yet.”
“Mmmf. Mff.” I had. Oh, I had.
“Nope.”
I twisted, and he pulled the gag free. Seized my chin and claimed my mouth in a wicked, vicious kiss. All possession and ownership. His tongue marauded, teeth scraping, and he groaned his pleasure.
When he lifted his head, his face was ice, pure command.
“Kane, please. I understand—”
