“Which just goes to show how careful you have to be when making assumptions,” I said.
We were sitting on Lucy’s verandah, which bore a striking similarity to my porch, watching the sun go down.
“I wonder how Angela instantly recognized it was Bob in the interview room. After all, they were identical twins.”
“They may have shared the same DNA,” I said, “but not the same genetics. There are always differences, and these may become more obvious as they age – particularly to someone who knew Bob intimately, and I doubt that anyone was more intimately familiar with his appearance than Angela. But even if she hadn’t identified him, and if he hadn’t confessed, the police would have soon worked it out. After all, unlike George, Bob’s fingerprints would be all over his home and all over his office too.”
“I feel so down,” Lucy said miserably. “I thought we were helping Angela – helping Bob. But in the end…” She wiped her eyes.
I put my hand on her leg and then I stood up, walked behind her and put my arms loosely around her neck. “Lucy, in this job we can’t afford to get involved emotionally. It’s tough, I know, but we have to move on. We did our best, we can’t control events.”
Lucy looked up at me over her shoulder. “I know,” she whispered. “It’s okay, I’ll be alright.” She patted my hand. I kissed the top of her head, smelled her hair.
After a while she looked up at me again and smiled at me through misty eyes.
“I guess I’m going to have to learn to take the rough with the smooth,” she said, “but, as Scarlett O’Hara said, ‘Tomorrow’s another day’.”
“Frankly, my dear,” I said, in my Clark Gable voice, “I’d have to agree with you.”
I smiled at her. She stood up, took my hand in hers, and led me into the house.

Book Three: The Black Widow
On vacation in Thailand Lucy befriends Dale Porter, a fellow American, but her idyllic break is cut short when Dale is arrested for murder. She enlists Kane’s assistance and they head to the Philippines to look for answers. Kane deputizes Lucy as his temporary assistant investigator and together they set out to solve the mystery of a body found floating in the sea and to try to prove that Dale was not responsible for his death. They travel from Manila to Subic Bay in their quest for the truth and identify several suspects along the way − including the dead man’s widow. But the victim had many enemies too. And why had Dale disguised the victim’s boat and concealed it in a secret location? Book Six: I Spy
Kane and Lucy find themselves with two case to investigate: one an apparent murder/suicide and the other a tragic accident – or was it? As they struggle to make sense of the apparently contradictory evidence they discover that neither case is as straightforward as it appears.
When the police discover the body of Cynthia Hughes savagely beaten to death on the kitchen floor and her husband Bob hanged in the garage it seems like an open-and-shut case – a domestic murder/suicide -- but Bob’s mistress, Angela, doesn’t buy it and she hires Kane and Lucy to find the real killer; and as they investigate the deaths it soon becomes clear that the police have overlooked some key evidence in the case which points to a different culprit. Meanwhile Mike Kingsley’s son has died after being struck by a train and the police have ruled it an accidental death. But was it? As Kane and Lucy struggle with the two cases simultaneously they discover that they have something in common – neither case is quite what it seems to be…
Book Seven: A Tangled Web
When Marjorie Griffiths learns that her husband has had a clandestine meeting with a young woman at a local motel, she hires private enquiry agent Dick Hampton to keep him under surveillance.
When Hampton informs her that her husband is in a room at the motel, with the same woman, she hurries over there and when she sees her husband leave and drive away she decides to confront the woman.
And then she vanishes.
When Marjorie’s husband, Chuck, reports her missing, he becomes an immediate suspect in her disappearance. He hires attorney Oliver Davies to advise him, and Davies recommends Kane & Lucy to investigate Marjorie’s mysterious disappearance. But when traces of Marjorie’s blood are found in the matrimonial home and in her abandoned car, Chuck is arrested; and this is only the beginning of his nightmare, as demons from his past return to threaten and even destroy him.
