"What would my father say, if he knew how you spoke to me?" Tara had once asked.

Devon laughed. She was tall — almost a foot taller than Tara — and she loomed over her. Tara stepped back. She'd never seen such viciousness in anyone as she saw in Devon. That woman would tear me apart with her teeth…

"Say one word to Thomas, and you're doomed, you little bitch," Devon snarled.

Sometimes Tara wondered whether Devon was insane. Then she decided that she wasn't. She was just malevolent.

She had to hurry. Dinner was always on time. Devon never let the girls forget it if they dared to be late. In company with Thomas, she grumbled that they were inconsiderate, and took advantage of their father's affection for them.

When she got the girls alone, she raged at them. Once she'd thrown a glass bowl at Molly. The bowl shattered against the wall.
