Barely Legal Vol. 3: Barely Legal Series (A New Adult Contemporary Romance Serial)
Page 8
As we turned to go, Jackson reached for my ankle and kept me from moving, but before I could kick him away, before Serena could flick him off me with her whip, the door quickly opened and closed, and the light went out.
“What the… Ah!” Serena’s surprised scream was followed by a terrifying thud.
“Serena?” I called into the darkness. “Serena!”
Jackson wrapped both hands around my leg and climbed over me, his weight pulling me down. I kicked him away and hurried to the light switch. Serena lay on the floor, a red line running from the corner of her mouth down to her ear and neck.
“Serena!” I knelt beside her and turned her to me, but her glazed eyes just stared into nothingness. “No! Serena. Serena!”
A feminine giggle sounded from behind me. I didn’t even need to turn around to know it was Willow. Not only was the laugh so devilishly like her, but only she could revel in seeing Serena prostrate on the floor.
Rising, I spun around, my hands seeking her retched face. “You bitch,” I cried as I swung. “You fucking brat!”
She backed away with a smug look on her face. Slowly, she brought her hand up and aimed a gun at my face. “You can call me whatever you like, but nothing is going to change the fact that you're a piece of trash who should run back to the trailer park where you belong. This world isn’t for you, Laura.” She looked down at Serena with disgust and gave a light kick to her leg. “And you should bring her with you.”
For a stunned moment I tried to figure out what had happened. Had Willow shot Serena? I was certain I hadn’t heard a gunshot. A silencer? In such a small enclosure, surely I would have heard something all the same.
“Fine I’ll get her out of here. I’ll get her to the hospital.”
“I don’t think so.”
“Look at her,” I screamed. “She’s barely breathing. She’s in shock. You’re lucky she’s not dead, but we have to get her to the hospital fast.” I turned to Jackson. “You can’t let her die. Please help me get her out of here.”
“Jackson knows what side his bread is buttered on.” Willow turned an ugly scowl to him. “Don’t you? There’s a lot at stake, remember?”
His jaw shifted from side to side and he finally swallowed his discomfort. “Sorry, Laura.”
“No. You can’t do this.”
“He can and he will, Laura. You might have a fiery history with Jackson, but I have a firm hold of the present, and for now, he’s heavily indebted to me.”
“You conniving bitch! Is it any wonder Sebastian wants nothing to do with you?”
“Tie her up. The service elevator is at the end of this hall. We’ll get them both out of here before anyone misses them.”
“Jackson, please. Use your common sense. This is absurd. This is kidnapping.” I glanced down at Serena. “Possibly murder if we don’t get her to a doctor.”
“As much as I love you… I can’t.”
“Okay,” Willow snapped. “Enough with the mush. Bag her, flip the other one over your shoulder and let’s get moving.”
With my hands behind my back, a rag in my mouth and a bag over my head, Willow led me out of the supply room to the elevator while Jackson hauled Serena on his shoulder.
