“All right.” She turned her attention to the sheets of printed paper in front of her.

Kelly paused outside of the large office in the corner. The Chief waved him in, and he entered.

“She had a positive ID, and I have her filling out her statement.”

“Sit down and close the door, Quinn.” He placed his glasses on the desk in front of him and paused to drag a hand over his weary face. Dark circles were forming beneath his eyes.

I got a feeling I’m not going to like what he says. Kelly moved to the door, closed it and came to stand across from him at his desk.

  “Sit.”

Once he was seated the Chief sighed.

“What was that?” He gestured toward the window that peered out over the precinct with a weathered hand.

  “I’m not following you.”

“The sparks between you and Ms. Reading could’ve burned down the building! It’s not like you to dip your hand in the cookie jar.”

  “It’s not like that—”

“So there’s nothing going on between the two of you that could make the department look bad, or the case questionable?”

  “This case is solid.”

“I’ll take that as a yes. You’ve been too good to be true for far too long. I should’ve seen something like this coming.” He shook his head.

  “It’s not some fling.”

“I don’t give a shit what it is as long as you do it on your on time. Keep your hands to yourself until this thing is over.”

“Do you want me to take her out of protective custody?” He clenched his jaw.

“Are you being a smart ass?”

“No, sir. That’s what I came in here originally to ask.”

“Tell her we’ll have patrols checking in on her, but I think she’ll be fine. I want her out of your place by the end of the weekend.” He narrowed his eyes. “Are we clear?”

  “Crystal, sir.”

“Good, get on out of here.”

And the penny in the air drops. He felt embarrassed. Like a teen caught having sex in the back of his Daddy’s car. He all but slinked back to his office. She glanced up when he opened the door.

“He said you could go back to your house at the end of the weekend. We’ll have a car patrolling the area to keep an eye on you.”

“Oh.” The light in her eyes faded, and he cursed their environment.

“Let’s get this wrapped up, and we can head back to my place.”

They needed to talk. Clear the air between them and speak honestly about what each of them wanted. A quick fling with her would never be enough.

“I’m all done.” Iciness crept into her tone.

“I’ll turn it in. Did you want to go from here to your house?”

“Might as well. I need to get it over with and assess the damage.”

“It should be covered in your insurance.”

“The surface damage maybe. The violation…” She scowled. “Nothing short of time is going to remove that.”

“How about we get a start on making good memories to replace those tarnished?” Her eyes burned, and he cursed his boss.

After filing the paperwork they drove to her home. They pulled up to a cream-colored house with a garage and Spanish style terracotta tile on the roof. She had rose bushes with flowers the size of his fists in shades of pink and red beneath the windows on both sides of the house.

“Bastard broke my rose bushes.” Instead of anger her voice was soft and full of sorrow.

He glanced to the right side of the house and winced at the broken window, boarded up by plywood.

“I planted those in memory of Campbell. It’s like they keep finding ways to hurt him, even though he’s gone.”

  “It’ll be set right soon.”

“Will it?” She turned to look at him. “You can’t promise that.”

“The odds are stacked against them.”

“Yes, but will I feel vindicated at the end of the trial? I know nothing can bring Campbell back. I’ve waited so long for this moment to come, to see these murderous savages brought to justice, and now …” She shrugged. “I must sound insane.”

“No.” He shook his head. “The fact is no matter what punishment they receive it won’t feel like enough. ‘Cause the fucked up shit they’ve done is so heinous it’s impossible. Death would be too swift and easy. Yet, life in prison isn’t enough. There’s no way to make them suffer that pain and loss. ‘Cause they have no decency and they don’t care. Not like you and I.”

“How can you keep doing this?” Her eyes were wide and filled with awe.

“Someone has to fight for people who can’t defend themselves. I watched my Father do it for years. It cost him just about everything, my Mom, and their marriage. But he helped so many people. He was my hero. I wanted to be just like him, still do I guess.” He cleared his throat. “That’s enough about me. We’re supposed to be checking out the house.”

She placed a gentle hand on his arm and squeezed. “That was beautiful, Kelly.” Heat spread across his cheeks and to the tips of his ears.

  “Just my ramblings.”

“Mhhmm.” She let the conversation drop, and they exited the car.

She unlocked the door and gasped. Things were strewn about, vases and lamps shattered. It looked like a tornado had come through.

“I’m not even going to be upset. I won’t waste one more ounce of emotion on those men. Their comeuppance will arrive soon.”

“You know you’re kind of hot when you’re all smevil.”

  “What?”

  “Sexy and Evil … no?”

  She laughed.

“That’s what I wanted to see. Where do we start?”

“What if I said my bedroom?”

  He paused.

  “The Chief Knows.”

“What! Why did you tell him?”

“I didn’t. He’s observant. He didn’t get to where he is walking around blind.”

“Wow, you like me so much it just bled through?”

  “Apparently.”

  “What did he say?”

“Hands off until we’ve wrapped up the case.”

  She sighed. Her shoulders slumped.

“But you know, rules are meant to be broken.”

Her manner perked up, and she grinned.

“That doesn’t sound like detective talk to me.”

“Mhmm. It’s Quinn talk.” He spun her body around and pulled her back to rest against him. He ground into her round ass, moaning as his dick twitched. “You feel what you do to me? We just started discovering each other. We can take at least the weekend.”

  “Then it’s hands off?”

  “Yes, then we’ll play nice.”

“Better make the most of tonight then.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. “The mess will keep.” He walked her over to the wall and placed her hands against it.

“I love the way you dress, all womanly without showing a thing. My mind exhausts itself recreating every curve.” He ran his hands over her breasts and down her stomach. “Dip and valley.” He nipped her neck. “Are you wet for me yet? Can I take you like this against the wall with your skirt pulled up over your hips?”

“Is that what you want?” Her voice was deeper, filled with desire.

“I want to fuck you until you’re spoiled for any other man. I want you to think of me every time you come.” He tugged her skirt up over her hips.

  “Shit.”

“You like that, C?” He rubbed her through the damp material that covered her treasure.

  “You can feel I do.”

“I’m not sure.” He pinched her clit.

“Oh.” Her body jerked, a fresh flow of liquid seeped through her panties and onto his finger. “Much better.” He grasped the thin strings at her hip and yanked.

“Kelly!” Her anger made him chuckle.

“I’ll buy you a new set.” He reached around to insert a finger into her slick passage.
<
br />   “Ugh.” Her protest stopped.

  He pumped fast.

  “You ready?”

She pushed her ass out and wagged it. “I’ve never tried it like this before, but I’m feeling adventurous.”

“I’ll make it good for you, baby.” He kissed her jaw line, pulled out his wallet, removed a condom and held it in his teeth as he made quick work of his pants, shoving them around his ankles with his boxers before he sheathed himself in latex. He nudged her slippery center and plunged inside. Feminine walls gave way, suctioned him in her heat.

“Damn this tight little pussy is the nicest place I’ve ever been to.” He pulled out and thrust in to the hilt again and again. His digits dug into her soft hips as he rode her. His sack slapped against her and heightened his pleasure. Wicked cries filled the air. Her breath came in pants, and her legs shook.

  “Oh! I’m going to come.”

“That’s it, sweetheart, come for me, cream all over my cock.” Her walls shuddered, and she threw back her head, her mouth opened in a soundless scream. She came apart in his arms, pulling him with her into the abyss. He spurted hot jets of cum as she milked him for all he was worth. They collapsed together against the wall. Once he caught his breath he spoke.

“You know I’m not done with you yet, right? This is going to have to tide us up for two whole weeks.”

“Will we be continuing after then?” Her voice held a hopeful tone. She turned to glance at him over her shoulder.

“Do you want us to?” he asked.

“Yes.” Her eyes narrowed as she studied him. “I’d like nothing better.”

“Then we will. This isn’t something I’ve ever done on a case, C. Everything about you is different … special.”

“You were my final step fully back into the land of the living.” She brought her hand up to tangle in his hair and pulled him to her sweet lips. It was more than a kiss, it was an unspoken vow. They parted, and his knees grew weak. She’s the one. The thought would’ve sent him out into the streets once. Tonight it gave him a sense of peace and contentment. Somewhere along the way he’d changed, or maybe it was just becoming evident and it’d been happening all along. For the first time since he was inducted into the police academy he wanted something different.

  Chapter Five

This was the moment she’d been waiting for what seemed her entire adult life. The courtroom was silent, and tensions were high. She gripped what would’ve been her mother-in-law’s hand tight. Their clammy palms were clenched in a death grip as they leaned forward in their seats. The lead juror stood. She held her breath.

“We the jury find Markus Vasquez guilty of murder in the first degree.” The courtroom erupted into chaos as Markus jumped up from the table and attacked a Bailiff. They fell to the ground in a tangle of arms and legs. Other officers ran to aid them. He stood, aimed the gun at her, and fired of a shot. The sound filled her ears, a searing pain ripped though her chest, and the world went black.

Kelly stood outside the hospital room, uncertain if he should turn around and leave, or walk inside the room. He took a step toward the door, touched the handle and moved back. It wasn’t like him to be so indecisive. If I don’t go in I’ll always regret it. He rapped on the metal twice with his knuckles, and opened the door. There was no one else there. He’d made sure of that. Claire lay in the bed, small and still. It’d been a week since he last saw her in the courtroom. He’d wanted to rush to the hospital to be by her side, but the Chief threatened him with everything under the sun. It was his insistence that she was in no danger of dying and that it would throw her family in turmoil that had made him wait. That and arrangements. He wanted to come to her with nothing left to keep them apart. He shut the door behind him, and her eyelids fluttered open. Angry brown lasers pinned him to the spot.

“What are you doing here?” A frown marred her luscious lips. The hands that rested on the white blankets were balled into fists.

  “I came to see you.”

“You took your time about it.”

  “I didn’t have much choice.”

“You didn’t seem keen on following the rules before.”

He sighed and walked over to the chair beside her bed. “After I shot and killed Vasquez in the courtroom there was an investigation and a ton of paperwork. The Chief wanted me to steer clear for a while. He was afraid they’d say I was trigger-happy because of my feelings toward you. He kept me updated on your condition, or I wouldn’t have made it this long. He wanted me to wait longer, but it’s not up to him anymore.”

“Why not?” Some of her anger faded, replaced by curiosity as she leaned toward him. Her features relaxed as tension faded.

  “Because I quit.”

“What!” Her eyes grew wide, and she pushed up to a sitting position and winced.

“Easy, sweetheart, I’m not going anywhere.” He leaned in to arrange her pillows up behind her.

“I don’t understand, Kelly. Why would you do that?”

“I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I have money saved, and it was time. That’s not the life I want anymore.”

  “What is?”

“I’m still figuring out the details, but the one thing essential to every plan I’ve considered is you.” He took her hand in his.

“I’ve fallen in love with you. I want more than a relationship. I want a life. Nothing short of forever is going to be enough.”

  “Kelly—”

“You don’t have to say it back, and you might not be there—”

“Kelly!” He stopped his ramble to meet her watery gaze.

“I love you! I want that too. You gave me back a part of my soul I thought was lost forever.” She smiled. “There’s no way in hell I’m letting you go.”

  He chuckled.

  “I like that.”

“It doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. You owe me for the no show.”

“Fair enough, what do you want?”

“To stay at your place while I recover, and all the pleasure I can handle.”

  “You still have to heal.”

“Then I guess you’d better be creative.”

He smirked and leaned forward. Her lips brushed hers.

“I think I’m up to the challenge.”

“Hmm. I think I need a sample of your work, Detective.”

“By all means let me show you.” Their lips met, and his lids lowered as he lost himself in sensations. The slow, thorough lovemaking of lips reassured him the risk he’d taken was the right one. Life without Claire Reading was no longer an option. They’d been each other’s salvation, and now they would enjoy a newfound happiness together.
