“Turn the TV on!” she screamed, rocking back and forth. When no one fulfilled the request she yelled, “Turn it on got damn it! They transmit information to me from the TV! They all do! If it’s not on I won’t get my mission. And I need my mission!”

Jesse looked at Penny. “Turn it on, chile.” Penny ordered. “I guess its betta to have her screamin’ than to not have her at all.”

Jesse did as she was told using her prosthetic arm, and Yvonna stared at the television. Rufus Day, a renowned reverend, was preaching from the pulpit like he did every day. She frowned immediately. “Turn the channel!” She begged, rocking heavily. “Turn it to my show. They have a message for me.” By the show she meant the soap opera, Turning Corners. It was about a group of friends who plotted to take down a profitable child sex ring by themselves. Yesterday she watched the season’s finale, in which Diamond and Tony got away on a jet headed for the Philippines, after killing the leader of the organization.

Reluctantly, Jesse turned the channel and sat in her seat. These visits were always harder on her because she wanted her to do well. To be better but it never happened.

Five minutes into the program, which was a rerun, Delilah hopped off of Penny’s lap and ambled in her mother’s direction. “Mommy, you okay?”

“Yes…” She didn’t take her eyes off of the show. It was as if Delilah wasn’t even in the building. Turning Corners drew her in and she would retain as much as possible, knowing that after the family hour, she would be alone with her thoughts in her room, so she could decipher the message. “What do you want? Watch TV, little girl.”

“I love you. Do you love me?”

“Talk to her, Yvonna.” Penny advised. “She is ya only chile.”

At first Yvonna’s wild eyes seemed to fill up with irritation, but when she looked at Delilah’s face, her expression softened. She wanted to tell her something that would help her in life. Something that would make her cautious of the people she came in contact with. “Mommy loves you.” She smiled weakly, tilting her head to the side. “But you have to be careful who you cross, baby. You never want to end up on somebody's shit list.”
