Mary stepped over towards the table, adjusted her glasses and leaned over, looking closely for the first time at what was scattered across the sterile plastic cover. Mary’s face dropped, the color washing from her skin, leaving her pale, waxy.

Sarah started at the sudden change in her friend. “Oh my god, Mary. Are you OK? What is it?” Sarah took a step back from the table, her body unconsciously shifting into a combat stance as she looked around the room for anything that might cause Mary to react that way.

Mary looked left then right along the line of artifacts—the 3D copied dagger, sheaves of parchment, a small statuette, the iwisa, and the rod from the Sobek temple. She swallowed hard, and looked hard at Sarah over the top of her glasses. Her gaze was cold, steely.

“Sarah. Except for the stone Iwisa and the printed dagger, none of these here artifacts are real.”

  “What!?”

Mary trailed her hand down the line, touching each in turn. As she did, each object shimmered momentarily then changed into old bits of sheet metal, sticks, newspaper and lumps of clay. Mary’s true-sight allowed her to see through magically created deceptions, and when she touched illusions it breaks the spell for everyone.

“Illusions,” she said, “If there were ever any artifacts other than the iwisa ... they’re gone.”

They both turned their heads and stared at the spot where the gate had been. The red and green lights of the radiation kit, flickered on the damp earthen walls, as it stitched the Veil tear closed.
