Primal Desire

There was a time when she thought she loved Warren but now she knew different. He was only half the man Zane was. There was no way she could settle for anything less now. The passion between them was electrifying. It amazed her how much they wanted each other. It was kind of strange to her on the other hand. They had a wall that neither of them was willing to cross. She had this feeling he was holding back and so was she.

Every time she could tell he was about to orgasm, she would take him in her mouth. She also wouldn’t let herself completely go in bed. She wouldn’t completely relinquish control to Zane. There needed to be trust and security there before that happened. He was clearly a very dominant person but at the same time he was very sensitive. He was in tune with her needs and what made her uncomfortable. If only she had more assurances that he would be the one for her, she could fully release herself.

Sitting at the kitchen table, while Zane was out gathering some eggs and vegetables for dinner, she contemplated what she should do. She could leave as soon as they were clear or she could try to take their relationship forward. There was no clear answer. If she tried and he didn’t want her, she wasn’t sure she could take it. She had her heart broken once but this one would destroy her. She couldn’t put herself on the line like that. She would just have to do the best she could and see how things played out.

Zane returned with supplies for their dinner in hand. She promised herself that there would be no burning the dinner tonight. Last night their dinner had been roasted from the sexual play they had engaged in while it was cooking.

  Chapter Seventeen

Everything seemed to be going well until the next day. They were in the office discussing how everything would play out when the unthinkable happened.

The computer started shrieking incessantly. Brenley saw Zane pop up from the chair he was sitting in, looking alarmed. He quickly went to the computer and pulled up the security footage. There were three trucks pulling down the driveway, which had just busted through the gate.

Oh shit! Realizing what was happening, Brenley reacted swiftly, running to grab the escape gear and throw it in the car.

They had devised an escape plan if they were somehow caught here and now it seemed that’s exactly what was going to happen. Zane would take care of the computer, setting a self-destruct sequence before joining her in the Camaro. It wasn’t all that big a deal because he had all his data backed up to a remote server but still she hated to see it destroyed. They each had a copy of a flash drive with the story and evidence on it. Feeling it in her pocket gave her comfort as she slid into the passenger seat of the car.

A moment later, Zane barreled into the driver’s seat of Destiny’s Fate. Buckling into the racing harness he turned the engine over. Looking over at him, Brenley thought he never looked more like the dream he was. Hair in his face, completely focused on what he was doing and in absolute control.

Brenley had only ridden in the car twice but had been impressed each time. Zane was typing in things on the mounted touch screen before he pressed the garage door to open. The engine sounded like it started all over again, taking on a deeper, more guttural tone. She felt the car lower to the ground as it adjusted to racing mode.

Pulling out of the garage on the back of the house, they waited. Nervousness crept over Brenley’s body. It seemed like it took forever for the trucks to finally reach the house. Zane was watching through the security system synced with his phone. All the trucks pulled up directly in front of the house and men started to pour out of each one. Suddenly Zane slammed the car into gear and punched the gas pedal.

It was like nothing she had ever felt before. He had modified the car to be four-wheel drive and with the power it was pulling, it slammed her back into the seat. There was no hesitation as the car pulled around the corner of the house. She didn’t even know how it could be taking a corner that fast without sliding off the road until she heard the sound of a turbine.

What the hell has he done to this thing?

Once through the curve around the house, they hit the long driveway in a blur of speed. She heard gunfire and a few dings in the back of the car but that was it before they were gone. Making it all the way down the driveway, Zane turned out before punching it again. Brenley saw a police car sitting outside the gates. Apparently Jennifer had called one of their contacts at the police station.

Zigzagging through the narrow roads, they planned to lose the police car but had to slow down to go through an intersection without taking the risk of colliding with another car. The police car never slowed down though, bulleting through the intersections like they weren’t even there. Finally they came to the highway. As they drove toward the on-ramp, Zane told her to hang on then punched the gas pedal. Looking over at the speedometer, she realized they were cruising at a hundred and seventy. This is madness.

Looking over at her, Zane had a little grin on his face.

“Want to go faster?” he asked, bumping their speed up to over two hundred miles per hour.

It was odd. She thought she should be scared but was only turned on. Returning his grin, she unfastened her harness, leaning over to his side of the car. Unzipping his pants she pulled his cock free, grabbing it in her hand.

“You might want to slow down a little since I don’t have my seat belt on,” she said before letting it fill her mouth.

“Ahhh. Yeah. I think you’re right.” Zane moaned with pleasure as he brought the car to a more manageable speed.

They had lost their pursuers so why not have some fun? Working up and down his meat, she relished having him in her mouth. It didn’t take long before she could feel him getting close. She knew his signs by now and could tell by the way his hips were involuntarily thrusting for her. Working faster she took him deeper until his warm liquid hit the back of her throat. It had a sweet and salty flavor that she couldn’t get enough of. Swallowing every ounce he had to offer, she stayed there until he lost his erection before letting his cock slide out of her mouth with a pop.

Zipping his pants back up, she looked over at him with a smile. He’s not going to forget that anytime soon.

His face was one of satisfaction. He looked over at her with a look in his eyes that said he had enjoyed it every bit as much as she had. That had certainly been a surprise for them both.

“How do you think they found us?” she asked Zane.

“The security on her computer was really strong. I think she must have found out I broke in and somehow tracked it back here. I checked to make sure she didn’t make it into mine but she must have traced the location. Only someone with an exceptional level of skill could have managed it,” he said with a dark tone.

“Where should we go from here then?

“I have a friend that I think we can trust,” he said through gritted teeth.

Driving down the highway, Zane bore a look of utter conflict. His face was one of satisfaction from what had just happened but also one of anxiety over what was about to happen. Driving back into the city, he took a circuitous route in the event that anyone was following them. Eventually he pulled into a neighborhood that although upscale, had a younger feel to it. His car found its way to a huge brick house.

Stepping out they hurried to the front door, knocking impatiently. A moment later a tall blue-eyed girl with blonde hair opened the door for them. Her eyes had a look of cold calculation until they found their way to Zane.

Her lips curled up into a smile, behind the cold eyes. “Zane, my darling, how are you? What has been going on with all this talk of you being a criminal? Come inside and bring your friend,” the woman said.

Stepping through the doorway, an ominous feeling passed over Brenley. Her skin tingled at an unconscious intuition of whoever this was. She looked like trouble and although Zane trusted her, that didn’t mean she had to. Stepping into the foyer, they all stopped to continue the introductions.

Zane introduced her, “Victoria, this is Brenley Meyers. I have been helping her to uncover the truth be
hind whoever has purposefully falsified accusations against us.” Looking towards Brenley he said, “Brenley this is Victoria Witley. She is an extremely talented actress, who somehow manages to stay out of the spotlight. We have known each other quite a while and I believe she is someone who can be trusted.”

Shaking hands with the woman, Brenley wiped her hand off on her pants as soon as it was not conspicuous.

“Why don’t you pull your car into the garage?” Victoria asked politely.

Agreeing, Zane went to open the garage knowing exactly where it was and pulled the car in. While they were standing there, each of the women assessed the other. Finally as the garage door was closing and Zane was walking in, Victoria broke the silence. “Enjoy him while it lasts.”

Excuse me? What the hell is her problem?

They all found their way to the living room and Zane looked heavy in thought. He quickly explained how he and Brenley had been set up and were hiding out. He finished by saying that somehow they had been tracked and targeted, but left out the details of what they had discovered. He told Victoria that they only needed a place for a night or maybe two until they could figure out where to go. Victoria seemed to be completely amiable to them staying there. Brenley couldn’t figure out the connection between Victoria and Zane but didn’t have a good feeling about it.

After bringing in their few belongings, Victoria showed them to separate guest rooms. It was like ever since Brenley stepped in the door, a wedge had been driven between her and Zane. It wasn’t so much that she placed Brenley in a second room as it was an attitude of superiority. When Zane wasn’t looking she would smirk like she somehow knew something that Brenley didn’t.

Something about this woman was wrong and Brenley knew it. She decided to take a hot shower before dinner to mull over the problem. Walking into the bathroom, she saw that there were granite surfaces and mirrors everywhere. The showerhead flowed straight out of a rock-encircled hole in the wall. This woman’s house was impressive and ornate but she could care less. What she really cared about was how Victoria and Zane knew each other. Why did he think it was safe to come here? What did Victoria mean when she said “Enjoy him while it lasts”? Brenley had the distinct feeling that jealousy was involved.

Letting the hot water pour over her back, she didn’t understand why Zane had brought them here but it must be for a good reason. She trusted him and hoped he had sense enough to not bring them into a bad situation. Turning the knob to switch the water off, she stepped out looking at herself in the plethora of mirrors. She thought that she may not be as pretty as Victoria but there was no way in hell that woman was stealing her man. Brenley took a deep breath. Clearly Victoria’s earlier comment had unnerved her some.

Zane knocked on her door, telling her to come downstairs for dinner. Following him, she realized he was quiet, seemingly almost awkward as he led the way to the kitchen. Victoria had ordered them an upscale Chinese dinner delivery. At least she had the courtesy to bring out plates for everyone and a bottle of wine, Brenley thought.

Sitting at the large mahogany table, Zane and Victoria were acting like old friends.

“This must have been so awful for you both. I knew there wasn’t an ounce of truth to it from the start. When the police searched your townhome and found all that cocaine, I knew something wasn’t right. I’ve known you for I don’t know how long and you’ve never done drugs. How did you manage to escape?” Victoria asked in a seemingly concerned tone.

“Well, we got lucky. I happened to have lunch with Brenley that day and when we went back to her apartment, we saw that it had been broken into. We were chased by some guys and put two and two together,” Zane said.

Why is he holding back the full story here? Isn’t he supposed to be able to trust Victoria? Maybe I’m not crazy for distrusting her?

“That sounds like James Bond or something. I don’t understand all this. I’m just glad you’re safe, Zane,” Victoria said before looking over at Brenley with feigned sincerity. “And you as well, Brenley. I can’t believe there are people out there who would do such bad things to wonderful people like yourselves.”

They finished dinner without Brenley getting even a single word in edgewise. Flustered and put off with the situation she excused herself and went to her room. It was another two hours until Zane came up to tell her good night. She had heard him downstairs laughing and flirting outrageously with Victoria for the last two hours. She was in no mood for sweetness.

“Hey, baby,” he broke in after a light knock.

  “Hey.”

  “Are you feeling okay?”

  “I’m fine.”

“Why did you leave dinner so early?”

“It seemed as though you and Victoria were having your own conversation just fine without me.”

“Baby, I was playing the part of a thankful guest. She could turn us in to the police still. I wanted to be as polite as possible.”

“Then why didn’t you take us to someone you trust more? Someone that you wouldn’t have to flirt with all night to avoid the police being called on us!” Brenley said in a more heated tone than she preferred.

“I don’t want to risk anyone I truly care about. If we don’t involve our close friends or family in this, then we can help avoid risking their safety.”

“Oh, that makes perfect sense. I guess you better go ahead and go down to her bedroom to make sure she doesn’t call the police. I’m sure if you give her good enough sex that it won’t be a problem.” Brenley was livid. She was shaking at the thought of him being with Victoria. She was not a good person. Brenley could see it in her eyes. She might be kind and sweet to Zane but to Brenley she was cold and calculating and that would do whatever was best for herself.

“I’m not going to do that…”

“Have you slept with her?” Brenley blurted out.

“Bren, please can we stop arguing? All we need tonight is to stay here. I went ahead and sent the FBI all the information. They should be all over this by tomorrow and we won’t have to worry at all.”

  “Answer the question.”

Silence hung in the air between them. A cold tension filled the room. Finally Zane responded.

“Yes, I’ve slept with her off and on for the last several years,” he admitted in a shamed voice. “But I’m not anymore. I don’t look at her that way anymore.”

“Right… What kind of look was that you were giving her at dinner then? I want to be alone. Go have fun with her or do whatever you want to do. After tomorrow you don’t have to put up with me anymore,” Brenley said as she rolled over.

Hot tears welled up in her eyes. How could he do this to her? Bring her here to the house of someone he had been sleeping with. She was embarrassed beyond all belief.

Brenley had thought that after everything they had been through there may be a chance of them staying together after it was all over. Now on the eve of their victory he had brought her here, to the house of one of his past flings. It was utterly degrading. The worst part about all of it was him flirting with Victoria. He was playing the part of the playboy he usually was. He had closed off his special emotional side he usually showed Brenley while in front of Victoria.

He had drawn a picture of them being stuck together and having a very hard time. It wasn’t the one of passion she had felt for the last few weeks. With tears flowing down her cheeks she could tell Zane was still standing in the doorway looking at her. After a few more moments, he quietly shut the door and went down the hall. She couldn’t tell if he went in his room or to Victoria’s.

It doesn’t matter Brenley thought, he would be in someone else’s room soon anyway. It wasn’t in his nature to be monogamous. He had always been flirtatious with everyone. It wasn’t going to stop now. Sobbing softly, eventually she drifted off into a restless sleep.

  Chapter Eighteen

Something was wrong. Lying in bed, Brenley left her eyes closed, listening to her surroundings. It was quiet. No, it was too quiet. She had the dis
tinct feeling that someone was watching her. Should she jump out of bed? Should she scream for Zane? In the end she decided it was best to take a peek and barely open her eyes. It was dark, except for the light shining through the window from the moon.

Daring to raise an eyelid, she found herself staring down the muzzle of a pistol with a silencer attached to it. There was no faking that she hadn’t opened her eye a little. Building up the courage, she opened it a little more and looked down the length of the gun to the hand and finally to the face of the wielder.

In shocked awe she was suddenly wide awake. Staring back at her was Jennifer Teah. The moonlight lit her pale blonde hair in an eerie tone.

Brenley didn’t know how she had found them but clearly this was not going to turn out well. Standing there, she was looking smug and bored with her duties.

“Decided to finally wake up, I see,” Jennifer said in a cool tone.

Tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth, Brenley couldn’t seem to form a response. At any moment just a slight movement of Jennifer’s finger would mean the end of her life. How had it gotten to this point? This wasn’t supposed to happen. They had all but won…There was only one way. She needed to stall, make Jennifer think they had extra information she needed. “Why are you doing this to us?”

“I’m not doing this to you, sweetie. You did it to yourself. You should have just ignored whatever started you snooping around in others’ business.”

“I don’t understand,” Brenley said, trying to act innocent.

“Ha ha, of course you wouldn’t. You sit up in your office acting like you’re smarter than everyone else. It may have never occurred to you but some of us prefer to have more menial jobs. It means that we can excel at them and stay under the radar. No one suspects us of being overly ambitious. I knew the moment you started researching Frederickson’s account. I know because it’s also my money that you’re investing.”
