At the end of episode 520, the rolling credits stopped between Harriet Rohr and Robert Cobert so that both showed on screen.   CHARACTERS PLAYED BY DIFFERENT ACTORS

During the nearly five-year run of Dark Shadows, many characters were played by more than one actor. New actors took over roles, and stand-ins (with their faces not clearly visible and no lines of dialogue) were used for brief appearances. The following entries give details.

Nancy Barrett was Carolyn Stoddard Hawkes, although Diana Walker played the role in one episode during 1968 when Nancy was ill. Katherine Quint supplied the hand of Carolyn as she prepared to shoot Jason McGuire. Lisa Ross played Carolyn as a child, evading Paul Stoddard while he was threatened by the Leviathans.

In 1840, Daphne and Quentin held a seance to summon the spirit of Joanna Mills. In response, Barbara Tracey appeared as the silent ghost of Joanna; later Lee Beery was Joanna when she began to haunt Samantha, played by Virginia Vestoff. Later still, Barbara Tracey substituted as Samantha when she almost killed Daphne Harridge.

Natalie Norwich substituted for Joan Bennett briefly as a stand-in when Judith Collins Trask returned from Rushmore Sanitarium, to which she had been committed in 1897.

Donald Briscoe played Chris Jennings, but Alex Stevens played Chris whenever he turned into a werewolf.

Maude Browning, a victim of Barnabas in 1795, was played by Vala Clifton. When the ghost of Maude was revived by Trask’s ghost in 1968, she was played by Maggie Benson.

Joel Crothers played Lieutenant Nathan Forbes; David Columbia was his stand-in during the scene at the end of 1795 in which Barnabas takes his revenge on Nathan.

Matthew Morgan was played by George Mitchell for the character’s first three episodes, including one in which his home-baked muffins were enjoyed by Victoria Winters. He was replaced by Thayer David, who went on to play a record-setting eight different roles during the remainder of Dark Shadows’ run. Thayer David played Count Andreas Petofi in 1897, but his disembodied hand was represented by Timothy Gordon, before it was reunited with Petofi’s body.

Among the many roles played by Roger Davis was the eccentric Charles Delaware Tate, who arrived in 1897 to paint a portrait of Quentin. In 1969, Julia asked Harrison Monroe about Tate and heard his voice, spoken by Ed Riley. Later she learned it was the aged Tate who had told her to go away.

While Maggie Evans was confined in Windcliff Sanitarium, her nurse, Miss Jackson, was played by Alice Drummond. Later, when Willie was released from Windcliff, Miss Jackson was played by Ann Davies.

At the end of the first episode in 1840, Julia Hoffman was nearly strangled by Charles Rush as her unknown attacker. In the next episode, her attacker was revealed as the aged Daniel Collins, played by Louis Edmonds. Louis Edmonds appeared as the ghost of Joshua Collins in 1970 Parallel Time; Anthony Sacco substituted for him in one episode.
