Chapter 1
Mary let out a sigh of relief when the doorbell rang. She jumped out of the couch and walked over to the door so that she could look through the peephole. Standing outside her apartment door was a handsome Alex hanging on to flowers and smiling as he always did.
“I know you’re checking me out through the peephole.” He said, “open the door this is a date.”
She acquiesced and flung the door open before throwing her arms around him and pulling him in for a hug.
“What took you so long?” she asked pretending to be more cross than she felt.
“I was caught up in a meeting baby,” he said kissing the back of her hand, “but I rushed home to you as soon as I could.”
She laughed as he kissed her.
“No,” she insisted, “not now, we have a date.”
“O yea,” he said stepping back and straightening his tie.
“I called us a car.” He said.
“Perfect.” She replied picking up her bag
She clung to his arm as they walked out of her apartment and towards the elevators. Mary lived in one of the apartment buildings her father owned in the city and Alex had moved in with her only a month after they started dating. Their relationship had developed after she met him at her father’s office. She had been enamored with his handsome features and charming manner.
She had pursued a job as a teacher to which her father had found great disappointment as he had always wanted her to take over his real estate company. But as with all things where she was concerned, he had never maintained his disappointment long enough. She remained in his good graces provided that she eventually married a respectable man who could run the business.
After six months of dating and living together with Alex, she was finally beginning to consider that he was the man for her. She was careful with her affections as always but there was something about him that made her eager to love him. Still, a part of her held back and she constantly tried to dispel that annoying voice that told her he wasn’t the one.
They were downstairs in no time but when she walked out to the car she realized that a different driver was waiting for her. She was so used to Antonio being there that when she saw the strange man she called out to him.
“Where’s Antonio?” she asked as she got closer to the car
The driver looked over at her and she was surprised by his good looks and charming smile. He was tall, much taller than Antonio and his body was well built. His face was handsome in a more rugged way which reminded her of the old western movies her father would force her to watch as a child. He wore his beard in a more modern version of that style.
“He’s had some family troubles.” The man replied calmly, “his wife just had a baby so I decided to sit in for him.”
She gasped remembering that Antonio had told her only a few days before that his wife had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl.
“Is everything alright?” she asked as her concern rose for her dear friend.
“Yes ma’am” the driver replied, “he just needs to be home with his wife right now. I hear young babies can be quite the challenge.”
Having been convinced of her friend’s wellbeing she got into the car and they drove off to the restaurant. Inside, she was seated at their usual table and the meals had already been pre-ordered for them. Alex ordered a bottle of champagne and before long they were sipping from their flutes.
“I’m glad we decided to do this.” She said looking over lovingly into his green eyes, “you’ve been working so hard lately. I should call dad and beg him not to keep you so late.”
The concern she saw on his face warned her that it might not be such a good idea. She had always told him to let her help him with his business aspirations, but he had always told her not to intervene. As one of the most handsome men in the office, he often used his good looks to get ahead. She didn’t mind it and she admired him for all his poster boy beauty.
“You know I don’t think that’s a good idea.” He said as the look of discomfort vanished from his face and was replaced by a grateful smile.
“Fine.” She replied, “but I wish you could spend more time with you. I have so many little stories to tell you about my kids at school.”
The grimace she saw reminded her of how much he disliked children. It was a position she had wished to change over time but thus far, none of her tactics seemed to work on him.
“I do my best as it is darling.” He said with a smile. “can we skip the kids talk and get to dinner?”
She was about to respond when she heard a commotion at the door. She looked around and saw the secretary from her father’s office walking towards her. For a moment she wondered if the woman was coming towards her to give her some bad news and her heart sunk.
She watched as the secretary approached her table but then she realized that her look was not one of concern but of anger. She wondered why she was so angry but then she followed her eyes which were chiefly fixed on Alex.
“What’s going on?” she turned and asked Alex at the very m
oment Lisa got to their table.
“Yeah Alex,” Lisa said, “why don’t you tell the lady what’s going on.”
Mary looked from one to the other and the shame she saw on Alex’s face made no sense. She looked around the room and realized that everyone was staring at them.
“I think your father’s secretary has lost her mind,” Alex said with a panicked expression on his face.
He looked up at Lisa willing her to stop whatever she was doing.
“Oh, so that’s what you’re going to do?” she asked.
The woman stood tall and swept her dark hair over her shoulder before turning her attention fully towards Mary.
“He’s been sleeping with me for over three months now.” She said, “I honestly didn’t know you two were dating but I found out today and figured I might as well let you know.”
The shock and horror she felt in that moment were unmatched by anything she had ever felt before and she suddenly realized a trend.
“You mean, all those extra hours at work, he was with you?” she asked turning her attention over to Alex who was looking at Lisa with unmatched fury.
“I can’t believe you could do something like this to me!” she exclaimed as she stood. “I’m leaving your things will be on the curb.”
Mary walked around Lisa and rushed out the restaurant trying to keep her tears at bay. As she walked out she realized that the driver was standing by the valet desk chatting cheerfully with the man. When he saw her, he walked over to her with a concerned look on his face.
“Is something wrong?” he asked
“I need to go.” She replied
Suddenly she felt herself being tugged backward and realized that Alex had followed her out of the restaurant and was now hanging on to her hand as he pulled her back.
“Let’s talk about this.” He said.
“Let me go!” she shouted as the pain of his hand clenching hers became unbearable.
“I said we should talk about it.” He said.
She had never seen this side of him before and the reality that she had let this man into her life with so little knowledge of his real character troubled her.
“Let me go. I’m leaving.” She said
He persisted and for a moment she thought she was in real danger.
“Hey, the lady said she’s ready to go.” The driver said coming to her rescue
“If I were you I’d stay in my place,” Alex said
The driver stepped forward and the look in his eye made her confident Alex was in real danger.
“This is my place.” He said before landing a swift punch in Alex’s throat that had him doubling over in pain.
She was so shocked by the movement that for a moment she wondered if he would be alright.
“Is he going to be alright?” she asked looking back as her driver led her away.
“He’ll be fine.” The man said, “he just needs an ambulance.”
She was about to turn back and rush to his rescue but then she realized that she wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of making her stay behind. She wanted to leave and she would. Whatever happened to him, he deserved.
The walk to the car was over in no time and as she sped away from the restaurant she could hardly believe what had happened to her today. She kept replaying the scene in her mind and the more she thought about it, the more agitated she became with Alex. He was a despicable man who deserved to lose everything. When the tears came, all she could do was let them out. She didn’t even realize when they arrived at her apartment.
“We’re here.” She heard the driver say from the front seat. She wanted to get up and go to her apartment, but she couldn’t move and the thought of being in the room where she had so lovingly cared for Alex made her sick.
“I can’t go up there.” She said meeting the driver’s eye in the rear-view mirror.
He was looking at her with a pitiful look that she couldn’t stand
“Where do you want me to take you?” he asked
For a moment she thought of going to her friend Terry’s house but she knew her friend would be too busy with her husband and children to pay her much mind. She couldn’t go to her father because she knew he would be furious and possibly fire both Alex and that secretary. Truly she had nowhere to go.
“I don’t know.” She said choking up as tears began flowing down her face once again.
“It’s ok.” her driver said, “I know somewhere you might like.”
He pulled away from her apartment and then drove a few blocks to an area of town she had never been before. She was a bit concerned that she was allowing her driver to drive her to unknown places but she was very capable of defending herself if anything happened. He parked outside one of the stores and came around to open her door. From there she could tell just how tall and handsome he was and the light cologne he wore didn’t irritate her nose as many others did.
“Let’s go in,” he said motioning to one of the stores with dog wallpapers on the outside.
She was intrigued to see what was on the inside.
“What is this?” she asked
“It’s a place my sister owns.” He said, “it’s her version of therapy.”
There was a hint in his voice that spoke of the intimacy between himself and his sister but then she began to wonder why he chose to drive people around if his sister owned a business.
She walked into the store and was immediately struck by the screams of glee she heard all around. It was a dog café. She had heard of things like this, but she had never felt the need to go to one. Playing with dogs of all types. Children were scampering about with little puppies on their heels. It was the funniest thing she had ever witnessed, and she immediately smiled.
“This is so cool.” She said
“It’s creepy.” He said flashing her a smile that spoke more of admiration than disgust.
“Matthew!!”
Mary saw a woman walking towards them with her hands on her hips and a wide smile on her face. She was slim, and her bright blonde hair flowed behind her as she approached them. She was a beacon of beauty and Marry instantly saw the resemblance between her and Matthew.
“Helen” Matthew said greeting his sister with a hug and a slight kiss on her cheeks.
“I haven’t seen you in a week and you show up here?” she said pinching his cheek with motherly admiration.
“I’m here with a client.” He said
His sister shot him a puzzled look before turning her gaze towards her. By the look on her face, she could tell his sister must have known she was crying.
“Oh, that’s great I always love new business.” His sister said, “if you leave her here I can take care of her.”
“I’ll wait outside.” He said
He gave her a reassuring look once again before walking out of the store. Mary looked over at his sister who was eyeing her with an intrigued expression.
“Great to meet you.” She said, “I’m Helen.”
“I’m Mary.” She replied.
“I have a feeling we’ll become fast friends,” Helen said before pulling her further into the room where she was soon surrounded by small children and cheerful puppies. She began to slowly forget everything that had happened earlier that night.
Chapter 2
Mary awoke surprisingly happy without knowing exactly why. It wasn’t until she turned in her bed that she remembered what had happened the night before. Alex was no longer in her life. He had cheated on her, his mistress had shown up at the restaurant and she had gone to a dog café. The memories of the night before were fresh in her mind but somehow, she didn’t feel as much pain as she had expected to feel in that moment.
When she walked out of her room and into her kitchen, however, she was shocked to see a man standing there drinking coffee while checking his phone. He was wearing a suit and looked up at her and smiled when she walked in.
“I thought you’d never wake up.” He said
She looked around the ro
om to make sure she was in her house and then she looked over at him once again.
“You begged me to stay.” He said with a shrug, “if it makes you feel better, I slept on the sofa.”
“Who are you?” she asked.
“Matthew Leonardo” he replied with a chuckle. “I drove you home last night after my sister took you to the bar. You were too drunk and so I walked you to your apartment where you insisted I stay the night.”
“And you stayed?” she asked feeling a bit embarrassed that she had made herself so carelessly vulnerable to a man she did not know.
“You were crying.” He said, “I didn’t want to leave you by yourself.”
She let out an exasperated sigh and ran a hand through her short brown hair.
“I’m sorry.” She said, “I didn’t mean to drag you into this.”
“It’s alright.” He said, “after you told me what happened I wished that I had hit that guy a bit harder.”
Mary chuckled.
“I told you what happened?” she asked
“Yes,” he replied fixing her with an intense expression, “a guy like that does not deserve a woman like you.”
The conviction in his words made her smile and she looked up at him with intrigue.
“You have anything planned for today?” he asked
“No,” she replied, “I was going to throw his things out, but I would rather call someone to do that for me.”
“Well, I guess my services aren’t needed here today then.” He said walking across the room.
He had his phone in his hand and she could see him checking his messages. She felt an odd sensation of loss and she knew in that instant that she wasn’t quite ready for him to leave just yet. He was the only company she had and she wanted him to stay just a bit longer.
“Are you working today?” she asked
‘You could say that.” He replied
“Is it weird that I don’t want to be alone right now?” she asked hoping he wouldn’t see the desperation in her eyes.
