  Chapter I

IT BEGAN THIS WAY… WITH A BUNCH OF BOYS

“Your mother looks like a slut!”

Justin glared daggers at Stephen, who was sneering naughtily while gazing at the picture of a shapely woman that hung on the wall.

“Why do you always have to be like that?” asked Kane, a scolding pout on his face.

He didn’t like it when someone said insulting things about someone else’s mother. Because among all the things in the world you could make dopey fun of, a mother was off limits.

“What did I say?” Stephen asked with sincere consternation.

“My mother is not a slut!” Justin said, folding his hands into fists.

“I didn’t say she was a slut,” Stephen pointed out. “I just said she looked like one. It’s a compliment. It means that she’s still –– you know –– that she has…” He started tracing grotesque curve shapes with both hands to illustrate what seemed to be a female butt. And when he saw that Justin was still poker-faced, he dropped his arms. “Well, you know what I mean.”

Tobey, who had been holding back in his throat, the flood of nefarious giggles that wanted to come out of him at the thought of Mrs. Delacroix – Justin’s mother – in kinky lingerie, finally found it in himself to join in on the conversation. “Why don’t you apprise us please?”

“Apprise?” said Stephen. “What kind of word is that? You into the customary speech now?”

“Piece of advice, donut,” Tobey said, “you ought to pretty up your vocabulary. It’s really lousy. And the word simply means to speak your mind, in case you don’t know.”

And Tobey went on giggling at his saucy thoughts of Mrs. Delacroix, which Stephen mistook for ridicule for his unknowing of the word ‘apprise.’

“Alright ––my mind tells me to tell you that his mother’s way hotter than your mother, what’d you think of that?” Stephen retaliated, and Tobey’s giggles quickly dissolved into forced silence.

He said, “I don’t want to see my mother anywhere near your filthy mind.”

“Enough on that!” Kane snapped, his eyes riveted on Stephen and Tobey.

He was bigger than the rest of them and thus, had sort of naturally become the self-appointed leader of the boys’ pack. Most of the time though, he wouldn’t act as such, preferring to simply be a comrade more than anything else. However, there were times like this when he had to slip back into his leadership role to keep toes in line before things got out of hand.

“Whatever dude.” Stephen said, looking away.

Tobey turned to Justin. “So, are you going to show us or what? We’ve all got things to do.”

Justin took a second to let the wind of anger that had blown up in him dissipate. Then he nodded slightly and motioned for them to follow him.

They all moved at an uneven pace through the living room of apartment 205 at the Flanagan Condo. Stephen was lumbering, stalky in his baseball cap. Tobey was falling behind intentionally, twiddling his head, hoping to catch sight of more pictures of Mrs. Delacroix somewhere. Kane was passing his hand over some of the polished woodwork adorning the place. He had a knack for wooden things that he couldn’t explain. The look of it, the smell of it, the feel of it... He always had to touch them. Justin was leading the way with even strides. He had a pocket full of coins that emitted a mild tinkling with each step he took. Though in appearance he looked unassuming, Justin was a bit of a wild kid. And it took knowing him well to discover that hidden trait about him. The others were wild too, in their own way. However, none of them were born that way, except for Justin of course.

“It’s all in here guys,” said Justin, who had forgotten all about his mother being likened to a slut by the time the small company got to his bedroom.

Expectedly, the room was in shambles. Dog-eared papers littering the floor, laundry piling up on the headboard, a throng of socks hanging over the back of a chair. Even the open shelf cabinet abounded with books, video games and the like, all stowed away in a helter-skelter fashion.

Justin got down on his knees and reached under his small bed. His arm scrabbled about for a little while since he was reaching blindly. Finally, he pulled out a handful of adult magazines from under the bed, and all eyes around him instantly lit up with excitement. He flapped them down on the floor, and the boys sat down, around in a circle, not before clearing the clutter away to make room. Each plucked up a magazine from the erotic bundle.

“Oh jeez!” exclaimed Tobey, opening his to a two-page spread of a nude blonde crouched on her hands and knees like a tamed lioness. “That’s what I’m talking about. This is so freaking awesome you guys.”

Kane was whipping through his pick with contentment, letting out a chuckle now and then whenever the models would assume a more explicit pose. Stephen had grabbed two magazines, one in each hand, going through them both at once wi
th minute scrutiny. As it happened, he had always had an eye for the details. Justin was more coolheaded about the X-rated content viewing, since the magazines were his property. He had already experienced the same ecstasy that now possessed his friends, and was causing internal heat waves to bubble up in their blood, almost awakening something very wild in them.

“You see now that I wasn’t lying…” Justin said with a smile.

“Dude, you see nudes and whatnot all over the Internet,” Stephen remarked. “But holding it in hand like this is like touching a wonderful painting at the museum. I can tell you that.”

  “It certainly is,” agreed Kane

“It’s the feel of it,” Tobey said. “It’s the same as reading a book online versus having an actual paperback. You feel closer to the characters on a paperback. That’s why you can’t beat that. You know, there’s been this study about what medium will outlast the other, and you’ll never believe ––”

“Do you mind?” Stephen said, “I’m trying to concentrate here.”

“Man, where do you get your supply?” Kane asked Justin. “You purchase that online?”

“You’re crazy ––” Justin replied. “If something like that shows up on my account statement, I’m toast. My father checks it now and then to see how I spend my allowance.”

“Oh man, I feel you––” Tobey said. “My father sometimes behaves like a frigging fascist too. Fortunately, there’s nobody on this planet that’s perfect, so you’ve just got to love him, eh?”

“Ah Christ, keep your daddy issues to yourself,” Stephen said. “And maybe if you stopped calling him names, you’d see some improvement at home.” He turned to Justin. “Alright, I suppose you got your stash from a Triple-X store. So how did you get past the age restriction and all? Or did they just figure that the customer is king?”

“Oh the customer is king all right––” Justin said, “so long as you can break out some ID.”

“Yeah, you can’t buy anything these days without breaking some law or something, go figure,” Kane said. “Just the other day, that fatty at the smoke shop by the school almost alerted the National goddamn Guard on me for a frigging piece of chaw.”

“I thought you were done with that spit tobacco crap,” Tobey said.

“I am –– you know, it was just for old times’ sake.”

“Look, this stuff is mint.” Stephen said again to Justin, clutching onto the erotic magazines. “You’ve got to let me in on this dude. You have a fake ID, or what?”

“Jesus,” Justin said. “I don’t have a fake ID. But I still have to protect my source. Look, if you guys want to take some home, then by all means, go for it. There’s plenty more where this lot came from.”

“Well, you’re the man.” Stephen cheered, high-fiving with Justin at once.

And this was nothing short of a noble way to bury the battle-axe between friends, after that slur he made on Justin’s mother.

They perused the erotic magazines in silence for a long while.
