  I was a little concerned by the rifle that was lying in the back seat. It was obvious that he was expecting trouble or, at least, was ready for it. He had mentioned wildlife and at first, I thought of chickens and other things of the sort. It never dawned on me that he had wild animals that were not domesticated and roaming free.

  It wasn’t until I heard the roar of the lion and then saw the huge trunk of an elephant that I began to get the idea that he had gone all out to make this a refuge.

  “I think that you are exactly like these animals. You just need somebody to see you as that rare pearl on the bottom of the ocean. You are wild and untamed. Breaking you of your misconceptions about sex and what you can enjoy has been an eye-opening experience for the both of us,” He said as he grabbed the gun and held it in one hand.

  He was driving with the other and moving between the trees. We came to a stop. We didn’t have a whole lot of time and darkness was swallowing up the area by the second. My stomach was in knots and my heart was pumping in my chest like never before.

  “I don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish with all of this, Devlin. I can only assume that you have a purpose for bringing me out here other than a game of show and tell,” I said with my hands holding onto the dashboard with my fingers turning deathly white.

  “I want to teach you that fear and sex can go hand in hand. Get out and we’re going to take a walk the rest of the way. No vehicle can go through the terrain that we are about to embark on. It is nice to see the full moon. That will make it easier to see where we’re going. I think that tonight we’re going to rough it in the great outdoors. That’s the reason why I brought that bag with us. You can carry it and I’ll carry the gun in case we need it for protection,” He said knowing full well that I was probably thinking differently about going any further.

  “I should have realized that this was just another one of your games. I didn’t think that you were capable of putting me in harm, but maybe I was wrong,” I said as I was putting him in his place and making him realize that scaring me was not the answer.

  “I thought that was pretty self-explanatory. You can go back, but you will need these to do it,” He said as he tossed the keys into the wild.

  “You could have just put them in your pocket. You didn’t have to throw them away. There’s no way to get back out of here without somebody coming to the rescue. I know that I shouldn’t question your motives, but sometimes your motives are questionable,” I said as I stood there and listen to the rustle of the leaves.

  The wildlife was waiting for the darkness to give them the freedom to do what they wanted to do.

  “I want you to treat this like it’s a lesson in what life has to offer. Dangers are everywhere and you could easily get run over by a bus stepping off a curb. The only thing that you can count on in life is death and taxes,” He said as he took a few steps ahead and looked back to make sure that I was following.

  I took his hand and I wanted that feeling of being overprotected. His fingers entwined around my own. That was a loving gesture. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that he really cared. This was exactly the way that a man would bring a date to a horror movie. They would hope that they would be so terrified that they would want to wrap their hands around somebody.

  “I’m not going to give you the satisfaction of being afraid. You’re definitely a different kind of fun. I’m used to feeling nothing at all, but you make my pulse race. You’re like that finger on a loaded gun. I can feel the rising bile in my stomach. That comes from the unknown,” I said as I took a few more steps towards a wild kingdom that was used to killing for the sake of survival.

  “I don’t think that I could change for anyone. You of all people know that I live my life a certain way. I can’t be mundane and boring and pushing the envelope is my way of keeping things fresh,” He said while planting his lips on me without any warning whatsoever.

  It was a long and lingering hot kiss. He was doing this for a reason and I was trying to find out what that might be. I wanted this, but only for the right reasons and not his perception of how he should act to keep me from losing it. I finally pulled away, but it wasn’t easy.

  “I’ve never asked you to change, but you can’t say the same thing about me. You’ve been trying to change me from the moment that I got here, but I believe that it’s for the better. I was hiding from life and your offer allowed me to reach for the stars. I no longer have to settle for what is considered safe. Taking a risk is the only way to live life to the fullest,” I said while still feeling that there was more for us to experience together.

  The light had extinguished, but he wasn’t wrong about the moon. It was bright and shone down from above to give us a semblance of where we were going. The feeling of his lips meant that this was war. If he wanted to play this game, then I was more than determined to meet him halfway.

  He probably thought that I was going to move away from the battle, but I was ready to bear arms and do what was necessary to make him see me as a potential partner and not just some conquest.

  “You always seem to take things to the extreme, Lucy. You always have to think that there is an ulterior motive. I just thought that it was time for you to see what made me excited. I lost sight of what makes this place special. I’m about to rectify that,” He said while trying to make me believe that this was not his way of making me do something that was against my better judgment.

  Chapter 25

  He kissed me again. I was enjoying it, despite the fact that he was strong arming me into it. I don’t know how long we kissed, but it felt like we were the only two people in the world. I could hear the cries of something in the distance that was being attacked by something that wasn’t taking no for an answer. This was a tender moment and not one that was ripe with a sexual tension that I’d felt those previous times. This was him lowering his guard and letting me in.

  I had my eyes closed and then I opened them and saw something that made my mind short circuit for a moment. Standing right in the path behind Devlin was an honest to goodness lion. It was licking its chops and then cocking its head like it was looking at us as prey for his dinner.

  It moved closer. It was a wonder that Devlin didn’t feel his presence. I wanted to tell him, but I was also feeding off the adrenaline rush of the moment. I wanted to warn him, but it was that fear of being torn apart that made the feeling in the air become electrified.

  The feel of his hands on my ass and the way that his tongue was exploring my mouth had my knees knocking and my legs about the buckle out from underneath me. I’d no idea how long it was going to take to open up his eyes. I thought that I saw some glimmer of hope. The way that he spoke earlier about having feelings for me was a good starting point.

  The lion made no noise and since we didn’t show him that we were a threat, it decided to leave well enough alone. It went in search of something that would be afraid of it. I was a little surprised that it didn’t feel that fear coming off of me in waves.

I didn’t want to admit that he had me from the moment that he said my name. I only used his proposal as an excuse to get close to him. I didn’t fully realize that he was more man than I could handle.

  “I’m guessing from your reaction that we had unwanted company. I hope that Simba didn’t give you the impression that he was a danger to us. As long as we don’t show any kind of sudden movements, then he usually goes about his business. He concentrates his appetite on those smaller animals that can’t defend themselves. He is after all the king of the jungle. He proves that every day by making those other animals scurry in the opposite direction,” He said while moving his hand along my shoulder and down to where he could now lift my fingers to his mouth.

You probably knew that that was going to happen. You wanted me to feel like my life was coming to an end. There’s no way that you could possibly know that he would come calling, but you were secretly hoping that he would,” I said as I looked into his eyes and wondered just what to expect from a man that was this unpredictable.

  “I always seem to underestimate you, Lucy. I have to stop doing that. You have this keen instinct and maybe that is the reason why I felt compelled to get to know you. All I know is that you have that certain something that makes me almost powerless to resist,” He said.

  His hands were busy unbuttoning my safari shirt. I was not the only one that was in for a surprise, as he got a look at the fact that I wasn’t wearing a bra. I was literally going commando. I think that he knew that from the way that I was blushing something fierce.

  “You have turned me into a woman that I don’t recognize. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I’m glad that you were the one that was able to see something that others didn’t. I wanted him to be here with me in the moment and not occupied with old emotions that didn’t need to be there.

  “What the…,” I said as my arms came in contact with the branches overhead. My fingers grasp onto the one that I could reach.

He didn’t seem like the kind of guy that would be caught dead roughing it, but I guess even billionaires like to get away from it all. It was his way of getting back to his roots and finding that freedom that he had when he was a child. I had heard those stories while I sat in his lap naked in the study.
