Dalton laughed. “What about you and Calla?”
“Are you kidding? Mom would roll over if I knocked her up before I put a ring on her finger.”
“Maybe what goes around comes around,” Dalton mumbled.
“What?”
“Nothing. So?”
Adam glared at him. “So, I’m working on it Nosy Parker! Mind your own business!”
“You should have asked her on Valentine’s Day.”
Adam shot him a dubious look. “What kind of cheesy asshole does that? No, her birthday’s a few months away. We’ll see what we see, okay?”
Dalton shut his mouth and nodded. He knew not to ask for more details. The fact that Calla had been around this long meant she was already as good as part of the family and Adam was right, the hammering out of the details was nobody’s business but theirs.
“Alright, let’s do this,” Dalton said, heading for the chair.
He straddled it, laying his arms on the padded rests. Adam sat down and dipped the gun into a fresh pot before pressing the needle into Dalton’s skin. Anything that was worth doing was painful. Dalton had figured this out years ago and continued to do so— football, carpentry, sobriety. Now he included having a baby on that list. Zoey had gone through a lot just bringing the boy into this world and it was the very least Dalton could do to commemorate his son’s birthday in ink.
Chapter Forty
Spring had given way to early summer. As the warm breeze wafted in through the bedroom window, Dalton lay on the bed and looked up at the darkened ceiling. Relaxed, he listened through the baby monitor to the sound of Zoey settling DJ in for the night. They’d get a few hours in, the baby would wake up once to feed, and then they’d all sleep in since it was Dalton’s day off.
Routine. He liked it. It in no way resembled the one he’d had before, but he didn’t care. It was predictable, calm, and above all manageable.
As Zoey sang to DJ, Dalton probably would’ve fallen asleep as well, except that was the furthest thing from his mind at the moment. Several minutes later, he heard the nursery room door close through the monitor and saw the bedroom door open a crack. Zoey slipped through in a flimsy nightgown, perfect for the warmer weather, and slid between the cool sheets.
“Are you asleep already?” she whispered. Disappointment filtered through her voice.
Dalton’s hand shot out, grabbed her arm, and yanked her down on the bed.
Zoey gasped.
“Shhh,” he warned her as he pressed down on the mattress and levered himself over her. “Don’t wake the baby.”
She giggled quietly. “That’s my line.”
“Hmm,” was all Dalton said by way of response. His fingers found the button of her gown and tugged until his lips found her collarbone. He licked her warm, salty skin.
Zoey sighed and melted beneath him.
Dalton had his shorts off, at least, but didn’t bother with her nightgown. He shoved it up over her hips and tugged at her panties. They disappeared somewhere in the darkened room behind him. He groaned as her sweet cream passed his lips. His cock ached for her.
They’d fooled around some since the baby but this would be the first night Dalton got back inside that hot, wet hole and he could barely control himself.
That was okay, though, he surmised. There were some areas in life where he just wouldn’t be able to take it slow and this, Zoey, was definitely one of them. He teased her clit mercilessly and when she drove her hips up off the bed, he sank his tongue deep, savoring her.
She filled his senses as he brought her as close to orgasm as he possibly could. When she was mewling and clawing at the sheets and trying desperately to ride his mouth, he finally lowered her back onto the mattress. In seconds he was over her, between her spread thighs, shaft pressed against her damp curls, head buried in the hollow of her neck.
“You ready for me?” he asked but only out of habit. He was already pushing in. The tight folds gave way slowly. Her heat squeezed him gloriously.
She came in a hard rush, clamping down on him. He smiled to himself before he gently bit her neck. This first time was for her, for all she’d given him. There would be other, longer sessions for both of them.
Later. Next time. Forever.
The words pounded in his head and he pounded into Zoey. The familiar wave rose up quickly as soft, wet flesh met hard steel. His arm at the small of her back held her against him as he claimed her, deep, with pulsing jets of cum. Images flashed in his mind, bright and sharp— Zoey having an orgasm, Zoey curvy and round with another baby on the way. He shuddered as the last drops emptied into her.
Later. Next time. Forever.
Entirely spent, he collapsed onto the cool sheets. Zoey rolled into him and snuggled into his chest. With one arm he pulled her closer. The breeze picked up again, rustling the curtains. Minutes later, Zoey’s soft breathing warmed his bare skin. He angled down and kissed the top of her head. She didn’t move, already asleep. He squeezed her anyway.
No sounds came from the monitor and that was a good sign. Dalton tried to drift off before the baby woke again.
“One day at a time,” he whispered as he closed his eyes.
