“I love you too, Charlotte. I wish you’d just been honest with me but, standing here looking at you, I realize what you did doesn’t matter if you really do love me. What matters is that I love you and you love me back.” As he said the words, he knew with every ounce of his being it truly was the only thing that mattered. “Maybe if you’d told me, I would have left, I don’t know. I do know that the way I felt about you scared the crap out of me.”
“The way I felt about you scared me too. I knew you’d be out of my life in a matter of days, and it would be beyond stupid to fall in love with you. But I did anyway. I couldn’t help it.”
“Yeah?” Her words made him smile, because he’d felt exactly the same way. “I kept telling myself to keep my distance. But I found it impossible to resist a certain beautiful woman who tries to run the world.” He tunneled his hands into her soft hair and looked into her eyes. “I’ve been running for a long time, Charlotte. I didn’t really see it, until being with you made me look. But being with you made me realize that maybe, in all that running, I was really searching. And then I knew: I’d been searching for you.”
A little sob left her throat and she flung her good arm around his neck. “Do you want me to come with you? Or would you like to go back to Liberia together? Will you live with me and work with me? Share my life with me?”
“I’m thinking heading back to Liberia is a good plan.” He wrapped his arms around her, pressed his cheek to hers and smiled at the same time emotion clogged his chest. “So, is that a marriage proposal? Trust you not to let me be the one to ask.”
“I’m sorry.” She paused. “If we go back, I’ll let you drive whenever you want.”
He laughed out loud. “I’ll believe that when I see it. And yes, Charlotte Grace Edwards, I’ll marry you and live with you and work with you for the rest of our lives.” He lowered his mouth to hers and whispered against her lips. “This is the last time you have to drag me back from an airport. This time, I’m staying for good.”
