  »Here I am, you damn bastard!«

The invader’s head turned around and the creature shifted its attention from the two wounded soldiers. Ivanova ripped the seal of her insulation suit open, suddenly becoming visible to the Globuster. The beast turned toward her and distended its jaws. Its claws reached forward, the razor sharp talons exposed. As she ran, Ivanova fired a series of grenades. Then, abruptly, her magazine was empty.

She had hit and injured the Globuster. The commander saw both of the wounded soldiers from the corner of her eye, crawling on all fours out of the beast’s reach. The creature slowly approached her. Its cold eyes watched her. Maya heard Necolett’s scream as if through a wall of fog. She ignored it, threw herself on the ground and drew her long combat knife.

The Globuster, dragging one leg, limped toward her. Ivanova refused to retreat a single step and saw, with burning eyes, how the creature prepared to pounce. Suddenly it froze, and it remained motionless.

Numb, the commander, looked directly into the Globuster’s eyes and saw that they appeared cold and dead. She didn’t dare to move and only reacted when Necollet approached from behind. She swirled about like lightning, thrusting her knife upward only to stop her blade just short of his jugular vein …

»Maya … it’s me! Don’t you recognize me? The battle is over! The invaders are all petrified or something – it’s like they can no longer move! Something’s stopped their advance! We’re receiving confirmations from other sections of the base!«

Ivanova awoke as if from a deep trance.

  »What did you say?«

»The invasion has ceased! The Shenzhou has reported that the Globuster ships are no longer making any course changes and that some of them have simply crashed! All the invaders are petrified!«

Necolett pulled the commander away from the Globuster and shook her shoulders.

  »We made it, don’t you understand?«

  Ivanova’s eyes filled with tears.

»No, Robert. Not all of us. We won’t see some of our friends anymore.«

A short time later, rescue missions were launched and the Shenzhou dispatched medical personnel to the moon’s surface. The shelters were opened and the people who emerged were aghast at the extent of the destruction.

As Donald Day charged into the room and met Ivanova’s gaze, he grabbed and hugged her. The Russian warrior had done the impossible and saved all their lives. Then he too remembered their losses.

»We’ll mourn for our friends – but we’ll rebuild the base. It’ll take some time, but we’ll do it!«

»Da … da!« she replied in a choked whisper, nodding her head and allowing her tears to run freely. She just succumbed to her feelings and collapsed into the arms of her comrade. To everyone in the room, she was not only a commander but also an exhausted and grieving Human being …

  A mysterious discovery

The rescue crews had found no more survivors. The Stinger fragments they could recover were no larger than the palm of a man’s hand. The scientists could not fully explain the cause of the devastating explosion, but it was apparent that the Stinger had served as a gigantic energy accumulator. The nanobots must have damaged a control or overloaded a circuit that held the energy contained. The resulting total failure of critical components had caused a spontaneous release of the energy. The nanobots on reaching their built-in limits had self-destructed. After the primary radiation had died down, search groups began to painstakingly comb the area around the gigantic crater. The detonation had produced fissures in the glaciers many hundreds of meters deep, spreading across the entire Antarctic continent. Hundreds of kilometers away from the Stinger’s crater, technicians received a strange signal and immediately alerted the special DEA team. Toiber Arkroid personally led the search team to investigate the mysterious discovery.

Members of the special team lowered themselves with ropes into an underground cavern, many meters in diameter, deep under the ice. A metallic object enclosed in the ice was the signal’s source. The team, using extreme safety measures, managed to excavate a tunnel to the find. After an hour’s time, their astonished radio calls told the rest that an unbelievable discovery had just been made.

Toiber Arkroid personally descended through the ice tunnel to see the discovery. He couldn’t believe his eyes.

  The End
