“Now, you’re talking,” Al said.
Nick’s new cell phone beeped. He slid the cover open.
“I worry you’ve lost interest, Nick. Get well soon. I’ll be coming for you. M”
It was the second message from Moby since he got out of the hospital. The first one he just ignored. Nick hit the reply button and typed: “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. Looking forward to seeing you.”
“Who’s that?” Terrie asked.
“Just somebody from work saying hi.” Turning back to Al he asked, “Can you also get me a copy of the departmental phone list?”
“Sure thing. Is there more cake?”
Nick gently rotated his right foot. The pain was immediate. He did it again.
I hope you enjoyed my story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please take a moment to log onto Amazon.com and rate this book for other readers. Also, you may be interested in two other stories I’ve written, “Journal” and “An Act of Kindness.” I’m currently working on my fourth novel, “Deadfinger.” Look for it on Amazon in the summer of 2012.
From the author:
I retired from the San Jose Police Department after thirty years and quickly discovered you can’t just ride bikes and drink beer all day; you need something else to do. So I started volunteering. First, it was as a board member for the Western States Police and Fire Games; a great organization by the way. Each year they put on a huge Olympic style sporting event. After that, the Red Cross was asking for volunteers to help out following Katrina, so I made a couple of trips to the New Orleans area. That was an interesting enough experience that I decided join my local search and rescue team. I stayed with that for a couple of years before eventually moving on. Thanks to GPS, not too many people need rescuing anymore. Then, along with my wife Kim, I turned to mentoring, which I’m still doing. But throughout all this, and even before, off and on for twenty years or more, I was writing stories. I love writing almost as much as I loved being a cop. Well, that’s a little bit of an exaggeration. Being a cop, a city cop in San Jose, was more fun, more exciting, more satisfying than anything else I can imagine doing — but I’m retired now, so I write stories. It’s a natural fit if you know cops. Cops love telling stories; ex-cops maybe even more so. You get a few of them together, add some beers, and it’s like feeding the meter, they’ll stay and yak and laugh all night.
Touched By Blood is the third story I’ve published as an e-book on Amazon. I’m working on two more stories right now. Deadfinger, is a sequel to Touched By Blood, and the other (untitled) is a sequel to Journal, which was published about a year ago. I’ll keep at it, too, because I figure even if nobody reads them, it gets me out of a hell of a lot of chores.
