“Yeah, it could’ve been — but it’s mine. She said she found it underneath the desk in Brad’s office at school the next day after I was in there with him — see how she took advantage of having her own key to his office? And when she found it, she had it tested for DNA.”
“She didn’t, Vanessa!”
“Yeah, she did,” I said. I reached into my bag and pulled out the paper; I gave it to her. “She told me that she had a feeling that it was mine, but she just needed the proof that it was. I confessed to her that I was hiding underneath Brad’s desk that day since that’s pretty much the only way that my lipgloss could’ve gotten there. I felt like such a degraded slut doing that, Ava, I really did. And you see how I didn’t even realize that my lipgloss had dropped out of my pocket while I was hiding underneath his desk so it served me right for her to find it, but I never thought that she would have it DNA tested.”
She gave the paper back to me as she shook her head. “But isn’t that, like, a violation of your rights? That she had it tested and you didn’t know it?”
“Actually, it’s not. I signed the consent form for DNA Day, and I remember when we got the forms that it clearly stated that our DNA could be tested at anytime for anything.”
“True,” she replied. “Well, I better watch what I do from now on, and not leave anything anywhere with my DNA on it!”
I smiled, and then changed the subject. “You know, Lisa also told me not to be surprised if Brad asks me to be his girlfriend tomorrow.”
She gasped! “Are you serious, Vanessa?!”
“Yeah, that’s what she said. She said I can say yes, but I think she only said that because she knows that I’ll more than likely say that, anyway.”
“Oh, my God! That’ll be fuckin’ awesome if he does, Vanessa! But it’ll show you just how long he’s wanted to be with you.”
“Well, I’m not gonna hold my breath!”
“I would!”
We laughed.
Brad, Marc, Ken, and Zac walked out of the shop. Brad and Marc got into Brad’s car, and Ken and Zac got into Ken’s.
I kept looking at Brad as he drove off in the other direction. I didn’t know what to think now. I knew that he had just broken up with Lisa, but he could’ve at least came over to Ava and me and said that he was leaving. This made me mad so I really wasn’t expecting for him to call me or anything, and I definitely wasn’t gonna call him.
Minutes later, we decided to leave as well because I just didn’t wanna stay anymore.
As I drove Ava home, I thought about if Brad was really gonna ask me to be his girlfriend anytime soon. Even though Lisa told me that he didn’t like to wait on anything, he seemed really upset about their breakup so I didn’t expect for him to ask me anything. At this point, I was thinking that he probably didn’t wanna have anything to do with me anymore, either, just as much as he didn’t wanna have anything to do with Lisa. I also couldn’t get off of my mind that John had officially knew that I was secretly seeing Brad, so I knew that he now knew that Brad was the reason why I’d ended our secret relationship.
After dropping off Ava, I checked my phone for messages, but first, I saw a text. How’s it feel to have your secret told to the world? You better watch your back, bitch! I gasped as I dropped my phone on the driver’s side floor of my car. I picked it up while I was at a stoplight and checked the time that it was sent to me at; it was sent to me while I was talking to Lisa, so this left no doubt in my mind that this was John since he left after Brad and Lisa broke up with each other — and just when I was starting to believe that it wasn’t him who was sending me these. I didn’t know how I was gonna face him from now on.
CHAPTER 15
The next day, I sat on my window ledge staring out of it at the overcast skies as I wondered if Brad was ever gonna call me. I knew that he was still upset about him and Lisa breaking up last night, so I didn’t wanna bother him. I just didn’t know what to think about him or about us, so I honestly didn’t see him asking me anytime soon to be his girlfriend like Lisa said that he was gonna do.
I was also nervous about seeing John at school as well because I knew he was hotter than hell at me for ending my secret relationship with him and then finding out that Brad was in fact the reason why I had, and now because of this, it has really strengthen my beliefs that he’s the one that’s been sending me all of these secret texts from the start, even though he flat-out denied that he was when I confronted him. But now that the secret had been exposed about mine and Brad’s secret relationship, I knew he wasn’t gonna wanna speak to me ever again, let alone call me, and I was in great fear of him because I know that those secret texts from him were gonna get worse.
Suddenly, my phone rang — I froze, but then got up enough guts to look at it to see who it was since I didn’t know if it could’ve been Brad or worse, John. I was shocked; it was Brad. “Hey, Brad. How are you?”
“I’ve been better, Vanessa. I wanna know if you were doing anything right now, and if you weren’t, if you wanna come over?”
“No, I’m not doing anything right now. I’ll be right over.”
“Okay, see you in a few,” he said, and then hung up.
“Bye,” I said to no one on the other end. I hope he wasn’t inviting me over to have sex because it didn’t seem like he was in the mood to do it, and the last thing I needed was for him to fuck the shit out of me just to let out his anger about his breakup last night and I’m hurting for days because of it.
About twenty minutes later, I was standing at Brad’s door waiting for him to open it. I still couldn’t believe that him and Lisa were officially not together anymore.
The door opened.
“Hey, c’mon in,” Brad said.
“Thanks,” I said with a smile as I walked in.
He led me to the recreation room. We walked into it and I nervously sat down as I looked at him as he also seemed nervous about something. I felt a little awkward now being with him since him and Lisa were no longer together; the feeling was almost unexplainable.
“So, how are you? You know, since you’re not with Lisa anymore,” I asked in an attempt to get a conversation going.
“Actually, I’m a little down about it. I mean, you can’t be with someone for that long and feel absolutely nothing after a breakup.”
“I perfectly understand. You two were together for a long time; I’d never been with any of my boyfriends for even half that time.”
He nodded, and then sighed. He turned and looked at me. “Well, today is a new beginning, and I wanna start a new beginning off right. I want you to be my girlfriend, Vanessa. I want us to be together for years to come.”
I gasped! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! “Oh, my God, Brad! This was so unexpected!” I said, not wanting to tell him yet that Lisa said that he might ask me. “I never thought I would see the day that you would ask me this and so soon at that so yes! YES! I’ll be your girlfriend! Oh, my God!!”
“You have made me the happiest man in this world!” he said with a big smile.
We hugged and kissed.
“Oh, my God! I can’t believe I’m your girlfriend! I’m officially Brad Johnston’s fuckin’ girlfriend!”
He laughed hard! “And I’m finally Vanessa Ellis’ fuckin’ boyfriend!”
We laughed as we held each other.
“You know, I never thought that I would have a boyfriend my senior year, let alone you! Wait till I tell Ava this!” I said excitedly.
“I can’t wait to hear her reaction as well as my friends,” he replied with a smile.
“So I take it that you already told them? Including John?”
He grinned. “Well, I told Marc, Ken, and Zac that I was gonna ask you today, and I’m sure they told John so I’ll be damned if he doesn’t know.”
“I know he knows, and I just feel so bad about what went on between John and me, and now he found out yesterday that we were seeing each other in secret. I mean, he was really upset — he gave me a lo
ok that he’s never given me before — so I know that he now knows why I ended my secret relationship with him. You two haven’t talked at all since yesterday?”
He sighed. “Not at all. I think he’s mad at me because I told you that I wasn’t gonna tell him about us secretly seeing each other; it’s too bad he had to find out the way he did.”
“I know. I had no idea that someone recorded us both times! What the fuck?!”
“I have to admit that I tried to hide the fact that I was shocked when Lisa shoved those videos in my face last night. I didn’t think anyone got us on video, either, especially the one with us kissing in the school parking lot — I thought I looked around carefully — it was obvious that it was someone who was sitting in their car with tinted windows or something.”
“Very true. We just couldn’t be careful enough. But I guess that doesn’t matter anymore because since we’re officially together we don’t have to worry about keeping anything in secret anymore. So, I guess I really don’t have to ask are we gonna be openly affectionate towards one another at school?”
He smiled. “Of course. We can do what we want now, but you know, I don’t want us to get too affectionate because of Lisa, and John as well. I know neither one of them are gonna be happy to know that we’re an official couple; they can say what they want.”
“I know,” I replied with a sigh.
He got up. “I have to go get something from upstairs; I’ll be right back.”
“Okay,” I said, as I still tried to take in the fact that we were officially together.
Minutes later, he came back downstairs with a box. “Here, baby,” he said with a smile.
I took the box from him and opened it; I gasped! It was an absolutely gorgeous pair of diamond stud earrings that were a carat each, and a diamond solitaire pendant that hung from an eighteen-karat gold chain. I knew how expensive this set was, just like the platinum hoop earrings. “Oh, my God, Brad! This is absolutely beautiful!” I said as I held it up. “I just can’t believe this! What a perfect set! Wow, you really spoil me! Thank you so much!” I hugged him.
He smiled at me. “No problem, baby. You’re my girl now so I wanna take care of you like no other. Here, let me put it on for you.”
I gave the necklace to him, and then put on the earrings while he hooked the necklace around my neck; he kissed my chest. We began kissing again.
He smiled with a nod as he checked out how his gift for me looked on me. “Will you wear this set to school for me on Monday?”
“I’m wearing it every day!”
He laughed. “Well, I told my parents that I was gonna ask you to be my girl today and they said that they would like to meet you soon.”
“Where are they now?”
“My dad’s at work and my mom’s out shopping.”
“Sure, I would love to meet them, of course. And you know that my parents are gonna love to meet you, especially my mom.”
He smiled. “That’s cool. You are my new girl so I would like to meet them as well.”
We sat back on the couch and watched TV as we held each other, but we didn’t talk about last night about his breakup or me talking to Lisa afterwards, because like he said, today was a new beginning. That was yesterday, and yesterday was in the past. I wanted to focus on my future with him and I wanted it to be a very long one. However, there was no way I could take my focus off of John, and I knew that he was gonna find out about Brad and I being officially together like everyone else. I felt that I owed him a big explanation for this, and he still owed me an explanation for the secret texts that he’d been sending me and putting those roses in my car since he still hadn’t come clean about either one of these things. I wanted to tell Brad about this, but first, I wanted John to admit to me that it was him behind it all.
Hours later, I was on my way home. I called Ava.
“Hey, Vanessa. What’s up, girl?” Ava said.
“Hey, Ava! Guess what?!”
“What?!” she excitedly asked since she could hear it in my voice that I had something very exciting to tell her.
“Brad and I are officially boyfriend/girlfriend!!”
She screamed! “VANESSA! OH, MY GOD! I’M SOOOO JEALOUS OF YOU! YOU AND BRAD! I KNEW IT! I KNEW HE WOULD ASK YOU!” she shouted with joy. She sounded happier for me that he’d asked me than I initially did!
I laughed. “Ava, I just can’t believe it, either. Lisa said that he probably would but I didn’t believe her — I honestly didn’t — but he did! This feels sooo weird being his girlfriend now! And since we are, we don’t have to hide our affection for each other anymore so I feel good about that!”
“Oh, my God, Vanessa! You are gonna totally be the most enviable girl at school come Monday! But don’t be surprised if you being his new girlfriend gets around before then. I mean, everyone knows that him and Lisa broke up last night because it’s being talked about everywhere on social media. And just to let you know, Vanessa, you will be talked about for being Brad’s new girlfriend so soon, you know that, right?”
I let out a deep sigh. “Yeah, I know — but he asked me, remember? Who was I to say no? What girl in their right fuckin’ mind would say no if Brad Johnston asked her to be his girlfriend?”
She laughed. “I know, Vanessa. But you know that you two coming out publicly as a couple, people will know that you two were officially seeing each other in secret. I mean, it’s everywhere on social media about Lisa yelling at Brad about him fucking around with you and shoving the videos in his face about it, although it’s been said that no one knew what the videos were about because when people tried to talked to Lisa, Brad, and their friends, they all declined to comment on them.”
“Yeah, I know, but people can think what they wanna think. Him and Lisa are over, and they should’ve been for a long time. As everyone heard Brad say yesterday, he pursued me; I didn’t pursue him, and there was nothing left between him and Lisa and that they didn’t love each other. I shouldn’t be made to look like the bad person, here. Their breakup was mutual; I had nothing to do with it.”
“I know you didn’t, Vanessa, but that’s not how people are gonna see it.”
I sighed. “Ava, I know, okay? But I don’t give a fuck what anyone says or how they see anything. Brad and I are officially a couple. Like he said, it’s a new day and a new beginning and he’s treating it as such and so am I.”
“Good for you, Vanessa. Because the bottom line is if any girl would’ve gotten asked by him to be his girlfriend they would’ve said yes, no matter how much they would’ve said that they felt sorry for Lisa — bullshit! No girl alive would turn down a date with Brad Johnston, much less a proposal to be his girlfriend!”
I laughed. “That’s right, Ava!”
“And I will kick some fuckin’ ass on Monday if hating-ass bitches and assholes act like they wanna talk shit about you being with him now so fast. Most don’t have anything to say, anyway, considering the fact that everyone has some dirty little secret or two, and are sucking and fucking guys and girls who aren’t their boyfriend or girlfriend, they just haven’t been caught doing it.”
“Exactly! So those people especially better not talk because they have nothing to say.”
“They don’t!” she replied with a chuckle. “Wow, Vanessa! I can’t wait for Monday! What do you plan on wearing?”
“I don’t know. What should I wear?”
“Something fuckin’ sexy, of course! Make a statement to every girl and guy in that school that you are the new girlfriend of Brad Johnston!”
“Well, okay, but I’m gonna need your help so come on over now, okay?”
“Okay! Or maybe we can use Brad’s debit card and go shopping?”
“Ava!”
“Well, you’re his girlfriend officially now so it doesn’t hurt to ask him!”
“Well, I’ll see. But I’ll have to use it online.”
“There are billions of things to buy online! Call him and get the number and we’ll have everything shi
pped here for tomorrow!”
“Ava, it’s Saturday; Sunday delivery is gonna be expensive as hell!”
“To Brad Johnston, nothing is expensive!”
I laughed. “That’s true!”
Several minutes later, I walked through the front door of my home still wearing the diamond earrings and necklace set that Brad gave me. I heard my parents in the kitchen so I went in there to let them know about my new boyfriend.
“Hey, honey,” they both said with a smile.
“Hi, Mom and Dad,” I replied with a big smile, and then sat down at the kitchen table with them as my new jewelry gleamed under the lights.
“What’s the big smile about?” Mom asked.
“I have a new boyfriend,” I said with an even bigger smile.
They both looked shocked since I vowed to both of them after my last breakup that I was not gonna have another boyfriend while I was in high school, especially since this was my senior year.
“Wow! Well, considering the fact that you said you wouldn’t have another boyfriend while you were in high school, what changed your mind? He must be something else!” Mom said.
“Oh, he is!” I stressed with pride.
“Who is he?” Dad asked.
“Brad Johnston, he’s a senior like me.”
“From Johnston Pharmaceuticals, huh? Looks like you hit the jackpot, honey!” Dad said with a grin.
“Dad, he’s more than just filthy rich. He’s student body president, a famous athlete in football, gets really good grades, very sweet, caring and absolutely gorgeous!”
“Wow, sounds like he does have it all. You lucky girl, Vanessa!” Mom said.
I could tell that she was excited for me. “I do feel lucky, Mom, more than you know. He’s the type of guy that can have any girl he wants.”
“He didn’t have a girlfriend prior to you being his?” she asked.
I paused. “Well, yeah, he did.”
They looked at each other as if I’d stolen him from Lisa.
