I shrugged. “Sure. What is it?”

He glanced from the egg to me. “It’s a dragon’s egg.”

I nearly dropped it on the counter. I set it in its holder. “What? It’s a what?”

  “A dragon egg.”

A bolt of fear shot down my spine. “Dragons don’t exist. I sell puppies and kittens and birds. I do not sell dragons. I do not, I repeat, sell dragons. They breathe fire and hurt things—like people. At least that’s what happens in all the fairy tales and myths.”

Axel smiled coyly. “I’m afraid to tell you that I think you’re supposed to do now.”

The egg jiggled as it sat in the cradle. A small crack appeared on top. I threw Axel a terrified look. “What’s it doing?”

Axel crossed to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Hatching.”

  Oh, boy.

  About the Author

Amy Boyles grew up reading Judy Blume and Christopher Pike. Somehow, the combination of coming of age books and teenage murder mysteries made her want to be a writer. After graduating college at DePauw University, she spent some time living in Chicago, Louisville, and New York before settling back in the South. Now, she spends her time chasing two preschoolers while trying to stir up trouble in Silver Springs, Alabama, the fictional town where Dylan Apel and her sisters are trying to master witchcraft, tame their crazy relatives, and juggle their love lives. She loves to hear from readers! You can email her at amy@amyboylesauthor.com.
