Author’s Note
At the time of this writing, a number of substances that act by denying blood vessels to tumors were either in or about to enter clinical trials. To my knowledge there is no member of that group called Vasostasin. If one should appear bearing that name, it should not be confused with my fictional creation.
Acknowledgements
I’m indebted to many people for providing assistance with this book. Foremost among them is John Oncken, who showed me the ropes of dairy farming in southern Wisconsin and helped me understand that part of the country. I was also greatly aided in this by Steve Yttri. My decision to set much of this book in Wisconsin came from discussions with Dr. Carol Everson, who opened many doors for me, including an introduction to her delightful mother, Helen, and sister, Diane, without whom I would never have met John Oncken or been treated so well during my visit to Edgerton. I couldn’t have done without the help of Dr. Mark LeDoux and his explanations of the diagnosis and treatment of seizure-presenting disorders, and am grateful also to Dr. Curt Dohan, with whom I spent several hours discussing the features of prion diseases and looking at slides of patients so afflicted. Important contributions were additionally made by Dr. Bob Burns, Dr. James Womack, Dr. Malinda Fitzgerald, Dr. Liz Wilson, Dr. Steve Kritchevsky, Dr. Alessandro Iannaccone, Cantor David Julian, Chad Lindley, Corey Mesler, Lee Merrick, and Phyllis Appleby. My apologies to anyone I should have mentioned and didn’t.
