Biker Chicks: Volume 2

I suppose that’s how Jesse arrived here. I wonder what he was running away from. I wonder where his family is and whether it was one of them who left him with those scars.

I search the streets, but I never find him. Sometimes to soothe the ache that leaves I imagine that the pile of money we gave him was enough for him to change his life. Get a proper home, go home to his family, move to a kinder place. But in reality he probably used it for drugs.

One day, with sudden inspiration, I look for that hardcover edition of Anne of Green Gables, thinking perhaps I’ll leave a note in it for him. Maybe he comes in to the library to read it when he knows I’m not here. I’m too embarrassed to ask my colleagues. But when I get to the place on the shelf where it should be, it’s not there. I look in the database to see if it’s been checked out but find it marked “missing/stolen”. That makes me smile. So maybe he has, at least, a talisman against the despair that eats away at him, a literary talisman. I can relate to that. My Little Prince tattoo was mine.

Have you read The Little Prince? You know it ends with a plea from the author for any news of his golden haired friend? Can I express that same plea?

If you see him, if you happen to meet a blue haired, sad eyed boy of eighteen or nineteen, if he has a ring in his lip and a cheeky attitude, you will know who he is. If he has that book with him and perhaps makes a concerted effort to seduce you or your spouse, or both, you will be sure. If this happens, please do me a favor?

Say hello to him, from me, and tell him thank you.

And send me word that he’s all right.
