The Jewelled Snuff Box

by Alice Chetwynd Ley

She looked up at last, and his pulses leapt at what he saw in her eyes.

“Oh, Richard!” she said, with a little laughing sob in her voice. “Don’t you realise that I loved you almost from the first moment? That is the real reason why I could not return the box to you — I was afraid you must see —”

This time she did sway forward, and he caught her in his arms as though he would never let her go again. He bent his face to hers, and stopped her words with his lips.

A log stirred in the fire; its leaping flame outlined the two figures against the dark window, and caught the bright glint of the jewels in the snuff box which lay unregarded on the seat beside them.
