He laughed, “Yes, we are. I wanted to ask you days ago, as soon as I had the ring. But I thought we ought to wait until after the wedding.”
“I agree, totally. Not that I would have minded if you asked me sooner.” She kissed him, running her hands through his hair and drawing him closer to her. Then she pulled away quickly. “Can we keep it to ourselves for a couple of days? I’d like to go and tell my Mom in person.”
“Sure. As long as we know, that's all that matters to me.”

“I won’t complain about that,” she said, there was no place she would rather be than here in his arms, thinking about him making love to her.

They were both fully dressed and heading out the door. Hand in hand they walked back down the stairs. Jess glanced over at him and they both smiled. A couple of months ago no one, least of all Jess, would have given them a chance of happiness together. But here they were, engaged.
That reminded her; she reluctantly slid the ring off her finger and gave it back to Jason. “Here, keep it safe until later.”
“OK. Shame, I like seeing it on your finger,” he said, regretfully putting it safely back in his pocket.
“Once we tell everyone I promise I’ll never take it off again.”
“Sounds good to me. Come on Jess, let’s go dance.” He pulled her onto the dance floor.

They whirled around the room, looking like a couple of goofy kids, neither of them cared what anyone else thought. They were too happy, sharing a secret that was all their own.
