Alien Sky
Page 23
With a whoop, Riff's father came surfing along the water. A great wave lifted him up, and the old magician came flying forward on his surfboard, leaving the sea behind. An instant after Riff and Nova rolled aside, the surfboard slammed onto the beach between their seats.
Aminor leaped off the board and landed in the sand. The old man grinned and tossed his white beard across his shoulder. He wore a bright pair of trunks, a Hawaiian shirt, and a straw hat. A white smear of suntan lotion covered his nose.
"Did you see that?" Aminor said, eyes gleaming.
"Yes, Dad, we saw." Riff groaned. "It was almost the last thing we saw."
"Good, good. Wonderful!" The old man raised his finger as if an idea had just popped into his head. "I wonder if I can do it again."
He tugged the surfboard out of the sand and ran back to the water, his beard fluttering like a banner.
"The ancient, mystical Traveler," Nova said, watching Aminor leap back onto the board and keep surfing. "The hope of the needy. The protector of the innocent. The legendary wizard of a thousand names."
Riff nodded. "And he just fell headfirst into the sea, losing his swim trunks."
He sat back down on his beach chair. Piston and Twig, grumbling about the distractions, wandered off to build a new castle farther away. Romy and Giga kept chasing each other, leaped into the water, and continued their pursuit in the sea. Steel had left to find his ruins.
"Finally we're alone, my dear," Riff said to Nova. "Finally some peace, quiet, and—"
A roar rolled across the beach, shaking the palm trees. Coconuts thumped down.
Riff froze.
"What," Nova said, "was that?"
They slowly turned around.
"Ooh boy," Riff said.
A giant purple alien rose from behind the palm trees, stretching out tentacles large enough to tear down buildings. People fled in horror, screaming.
"Alien Hunters!" one man cried, racing toward the water. "Has anyone seen the Alien Hunters?"
Riff sighed. "Nice ten minute vacation we had here, didn't we, Nova?"
She tossed him his gun and raised her whip. "I was getting bored anyway. This is how I relax."
Romy emerged from the water, claws and fangs glinting in the sun. Steel ran back to the beach, sword drawn. Piston and Twig gasped, raced forward in their sandy bathing suits, and lifted hammer and wrench. Giga looked around for a weapon, found none, and settled on hefting her water gun.
The alien came crawling toward them, howling, tentacles knocking down trees and scattering sand.
Steel sighed. "No rest for the weary."
Romy's tail wagged. "It's purple! I love purple."
The Alien Hunters glanced at one another, then raised their weapons, cried out in fury, and charged to battle.
