"I'm saying it’s my familiar," she said irritably. "And no, you assumed they were all cats, though I said nothing of the kind."
"Right." My bad. Again.
She eyed the book for a moment, seemingly weighing something in her mind. Finally, she scooped it off the table and handed it to me. As a rule, I never take things from Gran, but she looked so serious that I had to reach out and grab the book. It sighed once it was in my hands again.
She scratched her chin. "He likes you."
"What does that mean?"
But, apparently, she was done being helpful for the day. With a flick of her hand— a trick I really needed to learn— she nudged us all toward the door. Wyatt looked alarmed by the use of power, and Cooper looked delighted at Grandma's new trick. They were out the door before they could say anything.
I tried to hand the book back to her before leaving, but she waved it away. "Keep it for now." A sad smile. "I think he misses the excitement."
Then, my cat and I were shoved out the door and onto the porch. I followed my boys silently to the car, eyeing the book in my hands. It vibrated slightly, like a kid after having too much sugar— a lot like Cooper at the moment, actually.
Wyatt gave the book a doubtful and suspicious glance. "Why'd your grandma give you that?"
"Said he misses the excitement."
"There's gonna be excitement?" Cooper chirped from the back seat. "Awesome!"
Wyatt groaned, and I smiled, starting the car and heading home. The book was a heavy, reassuring weight in my lap.
Right before we lost of sight of Grandma's house, the book said, "This is gonna be fun."
