Heath turned in his chair. “You’re going to have to give him back his life eventually, Sword.”
Maddox rolled his eyes. “You keep saying that shit, like the gestalt is a bad thing for both of us. I’ve never been such a badass in either of my lives since the Long Night. I’m effective now. And he has the rest of eternity to get himself right in the head. I don’t understand why you’re pushing so hard.”
Heath tilted his head back and sighed. “I don’t know how much time I have or if these remedies you concoct are even working. I have a suspicion that if I don’t make this happen, you’ll never let him go. He needs to make that decision when he’s not hurting so badly he doesn’t have a choice.”
“Since when are you so concerned about my vessels?” Maddox scoffed. “Kondole may have invested you with the power of a Stormlord, but that doesn’t make you a fucking saint. Wringing your hands over my temporary crisis of personal agency does not wash away the blood of the untold dozens whose choices you removed by murdering them to achieve your own objectives. Or the lies you tell people to get them to do your dirty work. At least I’m helping someone.”
Heath raised his hands. “You’re right. You and me—we’re bad people sometimes. I’m going to do some very terrible things to get the Grand Assembly to ratify an alliance with Thrycea. It’s why we’re here. But Maddox was never a murderer, and he’s going to have to live with the memory of the choices you make. Forever.”
Maddox frowned.
“The people you’ve taken before—they died when you separated. How well do you think Catherine would sleep after all the things we showed her? Humans are fragile, Sword, and one day that body might become the next Achelon with the power to enslave all of creation. Do you really want him to turn out like us?”
Maddox rubbed his temple and then sighed like a scolded child. “No. I suppose not.”
They stared at each other in silence for a while.
“You need me for any of this?” Maddox waved at the papers.
“No.”
“Good. I’m going to go get wasted.”
Heath sighed and returned to his papers as he heard Maddox clomp out and slam the door shut behind him.
Heath drew a lot of attention as he made his way through the streets. He was of Bamoran descent, which meant darker skin and, with it, an uncomfortable legacy of oppressing the lighter-skinned Turisians who made up half the city. He also had silver eyes, a hallmark of the Thrycean Stormlords, the sworn enemies of all the Protectorate stood for.
The people of Dessim were Omnitheists, believing in all gods as part of a collective Host. In Rivern, he had been transformed by the physical manifestation of the deity Kondole, the Father Whale, who was a peaceful representation of weather magic. The whale motif was currently in fashion, with representations of Kondole painted on colorful murals, whale medallions, and alcoves carved into walls like miniature altars. People either ran toward him to receive blessings or ran the other way.
Heath smiled and took it in stride as he made his way to the Guild of Correspondents. The building was a large open hall with a winding queue of people snaking their way to a panel of tellers at a long wooden counter. Behind them, seal mages in brown cloaks scribbled on sheets of paper at rows upon rows of writing desks. Off to the other side was a row of private numbered booths. Heath strode toward #13 and entered. It was a small coffin of a space, but it muffled the sounds of the hall.
A ginger-haired seal mage with a pimply complexion regarded Heath from behind a small desk, a mesh partition between them. Heath took a seat.
“Heath?” the seal mage asked.
“Yes. Jessa?”
The seal mage’s eyes fluttered closed. “I am Gantrick Bower. The mage of record on the other side is Edwin Turnbull. He is corresponding with Sireen. Are you ready to begin the pass through?”
Heath nodded. “I am.”
The mage sighed and rested his head for a moment. The change in demeanor was unsettling when he raised his head. The bookish scholar leaned forward seductively and twirled an imaginary strand of silver hair. “How’s the Mirrored City?”
“More ridiculous than I remember,” Heath said. “Where’s Jessa?”
“She’s breastfeeding and delegated me to the task. Besides, I’m going to be of more use to you. Have you made contact with the Inquisition?”
“What’s the passphrase?”
The scholar’s head tipped back as he laughed. “Mistrustful to the last. The passphrase is ‘new dawn.’ Satisfied?”
Heath crossed his arms, wondering if Turnbull was imitating the gesture on the other end. “How’s the baby doing?”
“Oh, Torin’s adorable. But lately the only way he can sleep through the night is to be submerged in a cauldron. It’s something Satryn apparently did to Jessa as a child. I can’t speak for my late sister’s parenting ethics, but it seems effective.”
Heath shrugged. “I met with Abbot Argus yesterday. He was none too pleased to see me, but he isn’t as powerful or treacherous as Daphne. He handed over information on the seven houses of Baash. They’re religious fanatics, Sireen. Their whole government basically comes down to one Patriarch, and he does not support an alliance.”
“Anything juicy in the Inquisition’s records?”
Heath made a throwaway gesture with his hand. “Not sure yet. Nothing screams blackmail if that’s what you’re asking.”
The scholar stroked his chin sensuously. It was amusing to see Sireen’s fluid movements enacted by a gangly teenager. “They present a unified front, but in any faction there is always tension. Look to those with the least prestige first, find out where they’re unhappy, and provide a solution. There have to be rivalries you can exploit. You should meet with everyone, especially those who would not meet you. That alone will raise suspicions.”
“So I should destabilize.”
“Exactly.” The scholar leaned forward. “You may have only recently become a Stormlord, but you take quickly to this. Create a crisis in leadership while providing an opportunity for one of the weaker houses to step forward. The real art will be getting them to trust that your interests align.”
Heath smiled. “I can be extremely persuasive.”
The scholar bit his lip and brushed his hand over his clavicle and down to a nonexistent bosom. “Mmmm. I’m sure. Let us know if you need anything from our end.”
“I will. And Sireen?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for your advice. You’ve been a revelation in this whole crisis.”
The scholar flipped his hand flirtatiously. “We both just want what’s best for my niece and her baby.”
“I’ll update you when something happens.”
“Likewise.” The scholar blew him a kiss.
Then just as suddenly as it his demeanor shifted back to his reserved, clerkish expression. “Magus Turnbull ended the correspondence.”
“Gantrick?” Heath asked.
“Um… yes?”
“I need your personal assurance that this discussion will be kept confidential.”
Gantrick pulled at the collar of his tunic. “Of course. The guild prides itself— ”
Heath flashed a broad smile. “Scholar Bower, I know that you’re working here to repay thousands of ducats in loans from the Magesterium for your education. On behalf of Empress Jessa I’d like to wipe your debt clean in exchange for your discretion.”
“I don’t know if I can accept that…”
Heath steepled his fingers. “The alternative is that I kill you. Ultimately, I will have your silence. I prefer to make treats a secondary motivation. It’s a more civilized way, don’t you agree?”
Gantrick nodded. “I understand completely… sir.”
“Thank you. The funds will be transferred in three weeks, you have my word,” Heath said as he walked out of the booth.
Sireen had given him a lot to think about.
Glossary
Translator’s note: this book is translated
from the original Thrycean, which was written in the Genatrovan dialect.
The Thrycean language has a rich tradition of obscure colloquialisms and a wide variety of dialectical idioms. The manner of speech and the idioms have been approximated to forms more familiar to English readers. High Thrycean, spoken by imperials, is an extremely exacting in its enunciation.
The Thrycean lexicon contains a robust corpus of suffixes and prefixes that facilitate the invention of new words and word concepts. Fluent speakers are able to do this artfully, and it’s the prominent feature of much epic poetry. While it can be serviceably rendered to English, the art is lost in translation. More’s the pity.
Abyss: The deep ocean kingdom ruled by the coelacanth. A water breathing civilization that lives miles under the ocean’s surface in total darkness and beneath massive pressure.

Achelon: the Desecrator, former ruler of the city-state of Minas Creagoria
Alessandria: the putative Queen of Lies, one of the most influential minds in Stormlord politics. She changed the tradition from rule by force to rule by manipulation.
Amhaven: a heavily forested nation to the west of the protectorate. Its capitol is Weatherly, and its primary export is exceptional timber from the Maenmarth woods.
Archea: a floating continent measuring ten square miles. Population is roughly half a million, with many living underground. Archea condones the use of slave labor and is ruled by a senate of its best and brightest citizens. Appointment is by merit, not popular vote. It is the last intact civilization from before the Second Era.
Artifice: the study of magic related to breathing life into enchanted objects and automatons. Masters of this discipline recently have learned how to transfer their minds to mechanical host bodies.
Asherai: a far-off kingdom on the other side of the world. This area is known for its shadow assassins, warriors who can teleport short distances.
Assembly: Rivern’s elected government. The ranks often come from old money, but powerful guild interests also campaign for influence. They convene in the southern tower at the edge of Trident Falls.
Automaton: a clockwork construct of limited sentience. They’re powered by heartstone cores that house their intelligence.
Backwash: the lower district of Rivern. The city’s anarchic laws are often ignored, and a thriving black market is tentatively allowed by the Assembly.
Bamor: the de facto capitol of the Protectorate. With a population of more than a million, it’s easily the largest city-state. The population and nobility are predominantly dark skinned, and the city has a reputation for iniquity. Saint Jeffrey declared a thousand-year jubilee when he defeated the Harrower Vilos. It is now year 568 of that celebration, which is held nonstop in one quarter of the city by revelers.
Barstea: a member of the Free Cities
Blood magic: the practice of reading and manipulating blood and other humors
Border Nations: impoverished monarchies with little access to magical power, including Amhaven, Veyal, Mythercia, and Gorin
Cameron: a firebrand assemblyman, representing the lower district of the Backwash
Dame Woodhouse: a woman of noble rank and an avowed rival of Muriel Silverbrook
Daphne: the leader of the Inquisition and Heath’s estranged mentor
Dolmen: an ancient monument placed by the empires of the Second Era. Dark powers inhabit them.
Dominance: an imperial dynasty that stretches across the five oceans ruled by hereditary weather mages known as Stormlords. The nation is called Thrycea, and its capitol is Thelassus.
Duke Rothburn: A distant cousin of Jessa’s who contests her claim to the throne of Amhaven,
Everstorm: A continuously raging storm centered above Thelassus that provides electricity to the city from its regular lightning strikes.
Fodder: an abbreviation of “cannon fodder,” a derogatory term for the disposable nature of Patrean mercenaries. People who use this term are racially insensitive.
Free Cities: See Protectorate.
Geas: a compulsion magically imposed on a person. A favorite enchantment in the lost Sarn empire.
Genatrova: the continent upon which the Free Cities and border nations sit
Gorin: a border nation. Its primary industry is fishing.
Hamartia: a seal that has been inscribed incorrectly, creating a flawed result; typically manifests as a physical or mental affliction
Harbinger: member of the travelers. His wyrd is to preside over inevitable tragedy. Like all Travelers he possesses strong, mysterious theurgy. He can teleport and see any future that will never come to pass.
Harrower: one of thirteen mysterious creatures bent on sowing misery. Each night they claim a single victim while he or she sleeps.
Heath: a thirty-five-year-old mercenary, former Inquisitor, former criminal
Hierocracy: the primary organized religion of Rivern. Its followers preach the value of life, faith, and charity.
Ilyara: the Witch Queen
Inquisition: the part of the Hierocracy devoted to rooting out and destroying Dark Magic
Invocari: the void mages who have protected the city of Rivern for more than five centuries
Iridissa: the Tempest and empress of Thrycea
Isik: a necromancer who works as a coroner. Since necromancy no longer is taught at the Lyceum, he was born and educated in Volkov.
Jessa: daughter of Satryn and princess of Amhaven
Karthanteum: a far-off city where transmutation magic is practiced
Kondole (aka the Father Whale): a god worshiped by the peaceful ancestors of the Stormlords
Kultea (aka the Hungry mother): a goddess of cruelty and power worshiped in Thrycea
Libertine: a Traveler who just likes to have fun, regardless of the situation
Lidora: a distinguished seal mage, known for her caution and reserve; one of the first women to be appointed to the Lyceum’s regents board since Pytheria
Lyceum: the arcane college of Rivern. It was once a premier institution until Dean Pytheria was convicted of unholy necromantic experiments. Its reputation is recovering; it is still considered the premier school for artificers.

Maddox: a twenty-six-year-old wizard
Maelcolm: Satryn’s twin brother and Jessa’s uncle
Maenmarth: An ancient forest inhabited by witches and spiritfolk, the bulk of which resides in the borders of Amhaven.
Mazitar: a settlement in the Dominance famed for pink-sand beaches and bioluminescent plankton
Memento Mori: a place to converse with echoes of the dead. See Dolmen.
Muriel Silverbrook: the richest, most influential woman in Rivern. She’s also a countess and the matriarch of a family that holds many seats on the Assembly.
Mythercia: a border nation on the western coast
Nasara: Empress Iridissa’s oldest daughter
Nash: a major Stormlord, father of Satryn and secret consort of Empress Iridissa
Necromancy: the arcane study of death and reanimation of the dead
Nerrax: Jessa’s cousin and son of Nasara
Night wrestler: a homosexual Patrean, skilled in hand-to-hand combat
Ohan: the god of sunlight, life, and renewal
Orthodoxy: See Hierocracy.
Patreans: named for the wizards of the Patrean empire, who created them. A race of cloned people who serve in the world’s armies as contracted mercenaries. They’re stronger and faster than humans and don’t dream or experience fear. They possess no magic. Every Patrean union results in a child who is a clone of his or her Patrean mother or father. Pregnancy lasts six months, and women can fight well into the third month without issues.
Petra Quadralunia: archwizard from Archea. Also a member of the senate.
Protectorate: a loose confederation of city-states that have thrown off the shackles of monarchial rule to be gove
rned by the will of the people. Though each city-state has independence, the center of the Protectorate’s collective government is in Bamor.
Pytheria: the disgraced former dean of the Lyceum who used her position to perform illegal necromancy experiments. She would be more than 100 years old today.
Quirrus: the head of the college of blood magic at the Lyceum. He creates strange hybrids by combining parts of different animals.
Red: the Patrean commander of the Twin Shields brothel
Reda: a fishing village
Riley: former student at the Lyceum
Rivern: one of the Free Cities of the Protectorate. It’s known for engineering and steam works. The city is built around the split of three rivers known as the Trident which sits atop a great waterfall that spills into the lower city, a district known as the Backwash.
Sarn: an ancient empire
Satryn: queen regent of Amhaven
Seal: an inscribed design that grants its bearer certain powers, such as telekinesis, longevity, truth detection, and the ability to produce fire
Sireen: Jessa’s aunt
Stormlord: a person born to Thrycean royalty who wields the power of storm and water
Stormraider: An ancient tribe of corsairs known for bloodthirst, who with the help of the coelacanth conquered the peaceful Wavelords and sired the current lineage of Stormlords.
Sword: An ancient weapon forged in Sarn, possessing an intelligence and capable of controlling it’s weilders. Once bonded to the Sword the host body will be controlled by Sword’s intelligence until death. Sword’s personality and reasoning capabilities are limited or enhanced by the natural ability of its host.
Tertius: the dean of the Lyceum and Maddox’s mentor
Thelassus: the capitol of Thrycea. Population is more than a million. The city has working electricity.

Torin Silverbrook: a mage from the Lyceum; Maddox’s classmate and Jessa’s suitor
Travelers: a reclusive, mysterious faction of immortals. They vary widely in temperament and abilities. Each bears an epithet that describes their wyrd, a duty or obsession they pursue to the exclusion of all else. Examples are the Harbinger, the Libertine, and the Stargazer.
