Simon’s mother began to relax.
‘You’re right, Carol. Simon always was one to support good causes; whether it was saving the whales, saving the trees! Looks like he’s found a new cause! I expect it will be something else by Christmas!’
She sat back and sipped at her tea as Carol left the room. That was it! It was just a passing phase. Young people, she smiled to herself.
‘Honey, you’re not watching the UK news story again, are you?’ her husband asked.
Vanessa turned to him, ‘I keep looking at the faces, seeing if I can recognise her. Surely I should be able to?’
‘Look, if you want to meet her, perhaps you could talk to Vince, arrange something?’ he suggested.
‘I don’t know! Somehow I feel I’m betraying Marissa by even wanting to know about … this person!’ she said.
‘Mom?’ Edward, her younger son, had entered the room. ‘Surely we all need to meet her. Isn’t she sort of family, somehow?’
‘Is that what your brother thinks, too?’ Vanessa said quietly.
Tom, the older boy, came in and sat on the arm of the sofa.
‘Yes, Mom. I know it’s hard for you, when … Marissa didn’t make it. But this girl has done nothing wrong, has she?’
Vanessa shook her head, ‘No, she hasn’t.’
Her gaze went back to the screen and scanned the smiling crowd.
