Reviver: A Novel

The man said nothing, but Kendrick detected a hint of amusement just around the eyes. He held the envelope up. ‘I have this. You may be interested.’ He removed the paper from within, the two one-sided sheets. The signature on the last, with a space for the man’s own. He placed the sheets on the table, a pen beside them.

The man’s gaze didn’t leave Kendrick’s eyes, and for a moment Kendrick wondered if he’d misjudged things. For a moment, he sensed his victory slip. Perhaps the man would rather die than tell them anything.

And then, the man’s eyes flicked down. He moved his arms, chains rattling through metal loops on the floor, the noise shocking against the silence. He picked up the paper and started to read. Kendrick watched his face, expressionless until the last sheet, seeing the signature. Definite amusement now.

The letter promised protection, support, resources. Show us what you know, it said. Show us why we should treat you as an ally, not a threat. Earn our trust and you’ll have all the freedom you want.

The man set the paper down and watched Kendrick with interest. Kendrick knew he was being weighed.

And then the man reached for the pen and signed. Kendrick was elated, knowing the anger and frustration of those watching him succeed.

Information. Information was what Kendrick did. Information was power.

And now he would be in control of information nobody else could possibly have. From here on, the prisoner was his responsibility. Everything that resulted would be credited to him. His career would be stratospheric.

‘I think we can be of mutual use, don’t you?’ Kendrick said.

The creature with the face of Michael Andreas looked up and smiled.
