  “Morning.”

I arch against him, enjoying the feeling of his hard cock rubbing against me. With a low growl, he reaches down to squeeze my ass, his fingers slipping between my thighs.

It’s rare for us to skip the foreplay, but on this particular sleepy morning, neither of us seem to need it. Tycran shifts against me, his hand moving to guide his cock between my thighs until I feel the tip of him at my entrance. Desire wells up in me as I shift my hips, giving him better access. There’s something incredibly sexy about my mate wanting to be inside me from the moment he opens his eyes, and I’m so wet already that he fills my channel with ease.

It’s sweet and slow, intimate in the best of ways as he holds me against him, moving in short, shallow thrusts as he rocks against me. He kisses my ear, my neck, my shoulder, his fingers skimming over my breast to caress my skin, pressing his mouth into the crook of my jaw and breathing me in.

“My love,” he whispers as he grinds against me, the thick hardness of him filling me completely. “My sweet one.”

His fingers find their way between my legs again, stroking my clit as his movements become more urgent, and an orgasm rises up urgently inside me, the pleasure surging through my veins as his hard, muscular body moves against mine.

I’m never going to tire of this, I think dizzily as I feel myself slip over the edge.

Ecstasy radiates through every limb as I arch against him, grinding my ass against his hips as he thrusts into me, and he groans as he reaches his own climax. His cock throbs inside me, flooding me with the hot rush of his release.

  “Krax, Lucy. Oh gods…”

He presses his lips to my neck hard, biting gently as he moans with pleasure, his fingers never leaving my clit as he carries us both through our orgasms.

Afterward, I lie snuggled in his arms, my head pillowed on his chest and my body molded against his.

As I glance around our room, I’m struck by how lived in and homey the space looks. Everything in here is something Tycran and I chose together, and I love the reflection of both of our tastes—the natural fibers and textures reminiscent of him and his love of nature, and the brighter accents I picked out, all jewel tones in deep blues and purples.

“You’ve brought color into my life,” Tycran says softly, his words echoing my thoughts. “I’ve been able to let go of the single-minded focus that drove me for so long. You’ve opened me up to so many new things, Lucy. I’m so very grateful for you.”

“I feel the same way,” I whisper, craning my neck to look up at him. “Life on Kalix is so different from what I had before… but I’m so much happier now. I feel at home, finally.”

“So do I.” Warmth fills his eyes, which are still a dark aquamarine, their color slowly shifting back to a lighter blue.

I know what he means. As much as I’ve come to love this planet, the true meaning of the word “home” isn’t a place for me anymore. It’s a person.

  My mate.

  My warrior.

  My perfect match.

  Tycran.

I lean up a little to press my lips to his in a soft kiss, trailing my fingers over his strong jaw.

“There’s a celebration at the palace tonight,” he tells me as we separate, his face splitting into a wide grin.

I grin back. “Oh, I love a good party.”

He reaches up to smooth my messy hair back from my face, pride shining in his eyes. “It is a celebration of you, my Irisa. Of our mission’s success. The Orkun are scrambling to hold on to even a fraction of the power they once commanded. Their remaining fleets are in disarray, and other planets they once dominated are taking advantage of their weakness and rising up against them. It will take them many, many years to rebuild their empire, if they ever manage to do so. There is a great deal to be grateful for.”

I bite my lip, emotion welling in my chest. “There really is.”

We spend a while longer in bed, talking quietly as our hands roam over each other, familiar and possessive. Tycran has a training session with the other members of the Alpha Force in the afternoon, because even without an immediate threat on the horizon, the Kalixians are still warriors and always will be. After he returns, the two of us head over to the palace.

The streets grow crowded before we even make it to the palace steps, and my jaw drops as I look around.

It feels as if all of Jocia is here—as if the entire city has shown up for the celebration. The mood is joyous and hopeful, even more so than the street festival that now feels like a lifetime ago. The elders have come too, and it’s clear that they’re as thrilled as everyone else with the near-defeat of the Orkun.

Once inside the palace, Tycran and I quickly get swept up in the festivities, and the evening passes in a blur of good food, drinks, and easy conversation.

After dinner, there’s dancing and music in the great hall, and several of the other women and I end up gathered in a tight knot as we watch the celebration continue around us.

“I have something to tell you guys,” Emma says quietly, excitement gleaming in her eyes.

“What is it?” I ask, sharing a look with Jade. We’re both barely suppressing our eager grins, having guessed what she’s about to say.

“I’m pregnant.” She rests her hand on her still-flat stomach, smiling widely. “Khrelan and I are going to have a baby. And the Kalixians are going to have a little prince or princess.”

Everyone exclaims with delight, congratulating her, and I notice Autumn glowing a little as she tells Emma congratulations as well.

It’s not going to be long before she has her own announcement, I think as she glances over at her daughter Chloe, who’s holding Sorsir’s hand. Their family of three will become a family of four before too long.

As we continue talking, the music switches from the slow tempo that the band was playing at first to a quicker, more upbeat song, and I glance around the crowded hall, spotting Tycran quickly.

“I’ll be back,” I tell the other ladies, then head across the large room.

Tycran glances up before I even reach him, as if he can sense my nearness somehow. I sway my hips a little as I stride closer and reach for his hand.

“You still owe me a dance from the festival,” I tell him with a smile, waggling my eyebrows at him. “So I suppose now’s the time for you to make good on that.”

His gaze skates lazily over me, hunger burning in his eyes. Then he accepts my hand, enclosing it in his larger one.

“I believe you owe me a dance,” he whispers in my ear with a deep chuckle. “But I think that comes some other time.”

A rush of heat fills me at his reminder of my promise to strip for him sometime. The way he’s looking at me right now makes me certain he’s already torn off all my clothes in his imagination, and I bite my lip as a rush of images fill my own head. I’m half-tempted to drag him out of the palace and back home so I can give him the dance I owe him right now. But this celebration feels important, and I don’t want to miss any of it.

“Don’t worry,” I tell him with a wink. “I haven’t forgotten about that. But in the meantime, maybe we can dance together?”

Tycran laughs as he pulls me close, wrapping an arm around my waist. Then he kisses me soundly, his lips warm and firm against mine. I kiss him back, marveling at how different things are now—at how the stony, hard warrior I first met is now unafraid to show me exactly how he feels.

To show me how much he loves me.

“Yes,” he murmurs. “Yes, my sweet one. I’d love to dance with you. Now and forever.”

  Epilogue

  Cora

“Hey, Cora! Are you ready? Harper and Autumn are here!”

  “Yes. I’m coming!”

I hurry out of the bedroom in my little pod and open the door to greet Rachel, who’s waiting just outside. The women who are living with their mates now agreed to meet us at the housing unit where the single women are still living—myself among them, of course. Emma and Jade are coming from the palace
, so they’ll meet us halfway.

We’re going to a baby shower for Rose, a little bit of Earth tradition in this strange place that we now call home.

Harper, Autumn, Rachel, and I head down to the building’s entrance, where we join up with the other ladies. Then the large group of us set out toward Rose and Tordax’s house.

The other women talk amongst themselves, all happy and excited, and although I smile and chime in where I can, I still hang back a little. I’ve made a few friends among the group, but I can’t help but feel a bit like an outsider, unsure of where I fit in here yet.

Still, I’m grateful to be alive and safe, and for the most part, happy. And I’m grateful that the other women seem to be doing well too. We’ve formed an odd sort of sisterhood since our rescue from the Orkun, and even as a few of us have left after finding mates, we’ve still managed to stay close. Even Emma, who married the actual king, and Jade, who’s mated to his brother now, don’t behave as if anything has changed. We see Emma less, since she has the responsibilities of a queen, but they’re still our friends.

And on Earth, we’d throw our friend a baby shower.

Harper was the one who insisted on it and organized most of it. Rose is due in a couple months, and she protested wildly, not wanting to make a big deal out of it. She’s both happy and nervous, which is understandable when it’s not only her first baby… but also a child with a member of an alien species.

She finally gave in, but only when Harper agreed to let Rose throw a shower for her when it comes time. Harper’s belly is almost as big as Rose’s, and I’m sure it won’t be long before some of the other women start announcing their pregnancies too. Emma already told us that she’s expecting, although she and Khrelan are waiting a bit to make the official announcement.

“What did you get her for a gift?” I hear Madison ask Rachel as she catches up to us. “It took me forever to make up my mind.”

“I had one of the artisans in the market make her a little woven blanket,” Rachel says, tucking her red hair behind her ears. “It’s so hard to know what to get for a little half-alien baby!”

“Do you think it’ll have horns, like they do? Or will it favor Rose more?”

“It’ll be adorable, no matter what,” Rachel says firmly. “I hope it’s a little girl.”

As we walk toward Rose and Tordax’s house, enjoying the light breeze, we pass by a group of Kalixian men walking in the opposite direction. I can tell from their apparel—or lack of it—that they’re Alpha Force warriors. Despite the fact that many Kalixians in Jocia tend to wear more clothing, the warriors stick firmly to their loincloths. And I’m not exactly complaining. They’re incredibly handsome, every single one of them. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ugly Kalixian male.

The men dip their chins in greeting as they pass us, and the women nod and wave back. Both groups pause for a moment, and I see one of the men, a warrior named Druxik, glance in my direction. I remember him from our time on Wauru—especially since it was his skill as a pilot that kept us from dying when our ship went down on that planet.

“Where are you ladies off to on this lovely day?” one of the men asks. He’s a younger warrior who I think is named M’Xelni.

“We’re throwing a baby shower for Rose,” Autumn says brightly, picking Chloe up when the little girl tugs on her hand.

“A… shower?” Another one of the men frowns, cocking his head as he draws out the word. “Is this a Terran custom?”

“Yup. It’s a party to celebrate a baby. We shower her with gifts that she and the little one need. That’s why it’s called a shower,” Rachel explains enthusiastically, laughing along with the other women at the obvious confusion of the men.

“Well, offspring are certainly something to celebrate.” One of the older warriors nods, clearly trying to be supportive. “Good luck to you in your… showering.”

I notice that Druxik doesn’t seem to joke as easily as the other men, who are laughing along with the women by now. But he does smile, and I can see his dark eyes brighten as his expression shifts. It’s a beautiful smile, softening the harsh lines of his warrior’s face into something altogether different.

As we split off again, continuing down the road toward Rose’s house, we can hear the men talking among themselves, trying to figure out what the hell Autumn and Rachel were talking about. The chatter of our own group picks up again, drowning them out, and I force myself not to glance back over my shoulder, even though I’d like to get one more look at Druxik. I can’t recall ever seeing him smile before, but I want to see it again.

“It’s so strange,” Nadia says, leaning toward Madison. “The mate bond could just happen at any time. It doesn’t matter! You could know someone for a while and then… bam! It just clicks.”

“It’s exciting, I think,” Rachel says, grinning at me. “It’s like a mystery. Do you have a mate? Who could he be? Just think… Rose and Tordax were immediate, but Harper and Malav didn’t even like each other at first. They had to get locked in a ship together to realize they were fated for each other. And Tycran and Lucy didn’t even want mates, and now they’re so madly in love.”

She smiles wistfully at me, and I can see the same expression on her face that seems to echo the feelings throughout the entire group… that none of them would particularly mind if the mate bond happened to them.

Smiling, I nod along, happy to be a part of the discussion, to be included in the gossip and chatter.

I keep my secret to myself, just like I always have. It’s a beautiful day, a happy moment, and there’s no reason to bring anyone down. Really, there’s no reason for anyone to ever know.

All the mated couples seem sublimely happy, and I hope every single one of these women finds their mate eventually.

But I know the bond will never happen for me.

  It can’t.

  It’s impossible.
