It Had To Be You

Questions were fired at them, but the group swept inside, laughing and talking. All except the silent Rio who followed.
Epilogue
Monday morning Laurel woke up blissfully happy. Wearing only the turquoise bracelet and earrings, she snuggled closer to Zach in his bed.
“How does it feel to have your album debut at number one?” he asked, his hand stroking up and down her bare back. “To be scheduled to play at the Venice opera house?”
“Exciting, unbelievable. I still can’t believe either of them. You made all my dreams come true.” The album release party had been wildly successful. There had been major print, radio, and TV coverage.
She knew a large part of the buzz was due to their outing Thursday night. She had to admit she’d had fun. It was the people you were with and not the people surrounding you that mattered. Sitting up, she kissed Zach on the cheek. Zach had made the announcement of her scheduled performance at the Teatro La Fenice at the release party. Peterson was ecstatic, and her agent had rubbed her hands in glee.
“But it doesn’t compare to this,” Laurel finally answered.
“Nothing ever will.” His fingers curved around her neck to bring her lips closer. The kiss was long and hot.
The BlackBerry on the nightstand rang. His arm wrapped around Laurel, Zach checked the caller ID, saw that it was Peterson, and shut it off. Paige, Dominique, and Sierra had found his phone in the guest bedroom when they were “helping” Carmen pack.
Laurel sighed with contentment. “Do you think it was a coincidence that your mother invited mine to spend a few days with her and they took off with everyone last night?”
“Do you?”
“No. They knew we wanted some time to be alone.” The tip of her finger ran over his lower lip. “I still can’t believe we’re engaged.”
“Maybe this will help.” Sitting up, he reached under the pillow and pulled out a black box. Opening it, he removed a square-cut five-carat blue diamond encircled with white diamonds. “I wanted to give you a ring that is as stunning and as beautiful as you are.”
“Zach.” Her voice trembled as he slid the ring on her finger. “It fits.”
“Just like we do, for a lifetime,” he said. “When you love and are loved in return, nothing else compares to it. It had to be you.”
“We’re going to spend the rest of our lives showing each other. I agree, no one else would do. It had to be you,” she said just before he pulled her into his arms and down into the bed.
