“Wreck, you can certainly mention the cost of raising children. The greed of parents who want to spend their money on bigger cars or houses or vacations would perk up some ears. And the desire generated by people’s drives for success, for financial or vocational power, or for meaningful jobs in research, teaching or civil service, have already slowed birth rates in developed countries.
“It may not help to show the actual cost of raising a child, but it wouldn’t hurt.
“I know that the U.S. Department of Agriculture puts out reports periodically on
the cost of having children and raising them to college age. The last I saw it was about
$220,000 counting housing, food, child care, clothing, and the numerous other expenses
relating to education and recreation.(37) In fact the Department has an interesting
analysis depending on where you live and how many children you have. It can be
accessed easily on the Internet.(37a) It is obvious that children born to poor people will
not have the same advantages that these middle class children have.
“People just don’t think of the dollars and cents involved.”
