“Girl, you didn’t drink any energy drink, did you?” I asked and she shook her head, then shrugged, and nodded. I laughed again and shook my head at her fondly. “Don’t sprout any wings please, it’s just a party. Be cool.” Cass’s eyes widened and she looked at me as if her being cool was impossible. It probably was.

“I can’t! I’m so nervous, what if Mark decides he doesn’t like me? What if he invited other girls that he likes to his party? What if…” I shushed her and then attempted to calm her nerves by rubbing her arms soothingly.

“Cass you’ve been talking to and hanging out with Mark all week, the man is in love with you. Of course, he invited other girls that he likes to his party or else they wouldn’t be there, I’m sure he has a lot of friends. You’ll be fine, just don’t overthink things.” I reassured her and she nodded and took a deep breath. “Good, see, better already.” I smiled at her teasingly and she pulled me into a tight hug.

“I love you.” She said and then pulled me out of the house and towards her place so we could get into her car and go.

“Oh, hey I’m on a mission tonight. Any guy you see who looks remotely interested in me send him my way. I need to break this dry spell; I’m beginning to feel like some old spinster.” I told Cass my plan once we were on the way to Mark’s house. Cass nodded and told me she was on board, I knew I could count on her to do exactly what I asked.

“Nessa, that guy from the coffee house…the one we saw at the bar later that day, did he ever come up to you to ask you out or anything?” Cass asked, I must have got her to thinking about my stalker too.

“No, he didn’t.” I answered in short; I didn’t know exactly how Cass would take my telling her that he was stalking me.

“Huh…he was really somethin’.” She said and I stifled my sigh, yeah he was, there was no denying it and that’s exactly why I was so determined to see what his problem was tonight. After all, we would be at a party around a bunch of people, it’s not like he could kidnap me or anything.

  * * *

The party was packed with people inside and out back. I swore I passed by a new face everywhere I went. Mark had a really nice house, all updated and a fantastic deck. I wondered what he did for a living; maybe I should’ve started listening to Cass when she rambled on about him. I should’ve also started keeping track of her, she’s disappeared again and instead of going forward with my genius plan, I was preoccupied with looking for Cassandra.

I sighed and then decided that Cass was a big girl, I’d find her eventually. I walked into the kitchen to grab myself a beer and as I straightened from leaning over the cooler, I spotted a guy sending me furtive glances by the refrigerator. He was cute, classic blue-eyed, dark hair kind of way and I decided to start with him. I smiled and kept eye contact with him as he made his way over to me.

“Hi, I’m Jarrod.” His smile was charming and he had an easy going look about him. He offered his hand to shake and I did, smiling widely. I actually made it to physical contact and no mystery coffee house guy.

“I’m Vanessa, it’s nice to meet you.” I said and just as Jarrod was about to say something, I saw him standing right behind Jarrod. His eyes seemed more golden than green this time and he seemed vaguely pissed.

“Excuse me, but I need a word with my wife.” My jaw dropped as soon as the words left his mouth, less for the fact that he called me his wife than hearing the sound of his voice. It was hypnotic, deep and smooth with the oddest accent. It wasn’t exactly European or Middle Eastern, but a beautiful melding of the two.

“Your wife? Oh, I’m sorry, she’s all yours.” Jarrod couldn’t get away from me faster. I look up at my stalker to see him silently staring at me.

“Um…” I didn’t know what to say, here he was right in front of me and I couldn’t voice any of the questions I had thought up to ask him. He took a step towards me and suddenly was looming over me; why did he have to be so big? I wondered if this was what football or basketball players’ wives felt like. What was I thinking? I was not actually his wife! I needed to pull myself together.

“Vanessa, my name is Kota.” My eyes widened a fraction more at the fact that he was actually speaking to me.

“How do you know my name?” I asked stupidly. Of course, he would know my name, he’d been stalking me for the past week and probably even longer before that.

“I know many things about you.” Was his cryptic reply. I simply blinked at him before taking a few gulps of beer. I definitely need something stronger. Kota stepped closer to me, his chest only a breath away from me. His warmth enveloped me and I couldn’t help but sway towards him. He had this magnetism about him that was uncanny.

“Is that because…you—you’ve been following me?” I asked, stuttering over my words. Kota looked down at me and smirked, I became so lost in his swirl of golden green eyes then that I hadn’t realized he said something. “What did you say?” I asked and his eyes darkened, with what emotion I couldn’t tell, but the look he was giving me was almost promising something and it was definitely sexy.

Heat licked through my veins almost instantly and I gasped at my body’s intense reaction to him. What was he? He couldn’t be a regular human guy. He wasn’t even touching me, but I wanted him so…badly.

“I said, I have been watching over you.” Watching over me? Like some sort of guardian angel? What was I thinking? Of course a stalker would say that to make himself seem justified. I straightened my spine, pulled myself together, and pushed my intense attraction for him to the side.

“No…you’ve been stalking me let’s be honest, and on top of that, you’ve been scaring away every guy who has ever shown interest in me!” Kota did smile this time and his expression was predatory.

“I’d be right to do so. You’re mine Vanessa, whether you know it now or not…though you will be sure of it soon.” Another cryptic response. I took a step away from him and he took a casual step forward.

“Maybe my talking to you was a bad idea. I think I need you to stop following me around Kota.” I said sternly, proud of the strength in my voice, even if bolstered by a bit of alcohol.

“Okay, I will stop following you if that is what you wish,” Kota said. Surprised that he gave in so easily; I looked at him in confused shock. I recovered quickly though and nodded my head once resolutely.

“Good…thank you.” I said lamely before quickly backing away from Kota and hastening from the kitchen altogether. There was a working bar out back and I thought I’d just stay outside from then on. Cass would find me when she was ready. I took a deep breath once I was outside and away from Kota. Who had a name like Kota anyway?

I found a seat on a hammock and I finished my beer. A handsome guy with blonde hair and brown eyes smiled at me and made his way over to me from the bar with two drinks in his hand.

“Hi, I noticed you could use another drink there.” He handed me a red drink and I eyed it carefully, I didn’t need to be drugged on top of trying to dodge my stalker.

“Thank you, I was just about to go and get my own drink.” I said and he smiled, nodding towards the cup.

“Well that’s where I came in. Don’t worry I didn’t lace it with drugs or anything, you can ask the bartender, he made it and I walked over.” I laughed; he seemed to have read my mind.

I noticed belatedly that I was talking to a guy and Kota hadn’t shown up. Maybe he had finally decided to leave me alone…I wasn’t sure if I was relieved or a little disappointed.

“Well thank you for not lacing my drink with anything…what’s your name?” I asked while taking a sip of the cranberry and vodka. I don’t think anyone could go wrong with cranberry and vodka.

“I’m Trenton, but everyone calls me Trent. What’s yours?” Trent asked before taking a swig of his beer.

“Vanessa, it’s nice to meet you.” I smiled at him, genuinely glad to be meeting him.

“Vanessa, that’s a sexy name.” Trent said and I laughed for his benefit. He was cute, but not terribly interes
ting as far as having a conversation went. I took a long drink from the cranberry and vodka then glanced over at the bar, wondering if I should excuse myself for another drink.

I inhaled sharply when I saw who was sitting at the bar; his hypnotizing eyes boring into mine. “Um…Trent were you standing next to that guy when you decided to come over to me?” I asked and Trent glanced over before he nodded, a chuckle escaping his lips.

“He gave me the courage to come up to you, usually I’m too shy to go up to a girl.” Well that explained why he was seemingly boring at conversation, or at least small talk.

“He told you to come over here?” I asked, finally looking back at Trent who nodded once.

“Why do you know him, or is there something going on with you two?” Trent asked and I shook my head, frustrated beyond belief by Kota. What was his tact? What did he want with me?

“Look I don’t want to get in the middle of anything with you and that guy especially, he’d have me for breakfast.” Trent said while getting up and giving me a parting wave as he walked away from me.

I sat up, confused as to what just happened. Kota had just managed to deflect yet another guy away from me and he didn’t even have to directly intervene this time! I finished the last of my drink and stood up to find Cassandra. I wanted to leave and she had the keys to the car.

“You shouldn’t speak to other males Vanessa.” His deep voice slid across my senses, spreading a slow burn in its wake. What was he some sort of sex demon? I turned around and glared up at Kota who simply smirked at me. Apparently, he found this game funny. I didn’t.

“Why not?” I asked and Kota’s smile widened, his finger lifting to wrap a lock of my hair around it. I sucked in a gasp and tried to keep my cool even though I was completely distracted by the fact that he was touching me, even if in such a miniscule way.

“You know why, you’re feeling it even now. You’re mine Vanessa and you want me, it would be easier if you accepted it.” Kota said before bending down and capturing my lips with his.

That slow burn ignited into a full on inferno in my veins. My sex throbbed almost painfully for want of this man and my body itched for his hands to explore. Kota broke the kiss just as abruptly as he initiated it and he actually had to put a hand on my shoulder to steady me from rocking off balance.

“Wh—why did you…?” My mind was getting fuzzy and I couldn’t regain my balance, Kota was holding on to me and leading me towards the house. Why were we going inside? My surroundings were graying around the edges and I had to focus on staying upright as I walked with Kota through the party full of people. The last thing I registered before blacking out was that I managed not to fall over while walking through the house.

  * * *

I woke up with a killer headache and no memory of what happened at the party last night. I was sure that I went to the party with Cass…but did I leave with her? What the hell happened? I opened my eyes and gasped as I sat up.

Looking around, I quickly realized that I wasn’t in my house or Cassandra’s, that I wasn’t in Saranac Lake even. I stared straight ahead at the view of the ocean; the water was dark blue, reflecting the dark starry sky above. I could just make out the stretch of white sanded beach before my gaze was brought back to the sky…something was different about it.

Was that…two moons? The longer I stared at it, the longer I was sure there were two moons in the sky. I gasped and lifted my hand to push my fingers through my hair, that’s when I saw it. A wedding band on my left ring finger. It was pure gold and had small diamonds embedded into it. It was beautiful, but it was a wedding band.

I looked down at myself and touched the silky fabric of the nightgown I was wearing. I was going to pass out, because I was pretty sure I was naked under the thin material.

I looked around the spacious room. It was fit for a king really, the four poster canopy bed was huge and across the room from the bed was a wide fireplace and small seating area surrounding it with a chaise and sofa chair sharing a small end table.

On the wall to the right of the bed was an archway leading to a little hall that I was afraid to see where it led. Then on either side of the fireplace were two archways and I could see that they led into a study or small library. The focal point of the room though was the large wall of glass to the left looking out over the ocean and the beach. I must be high up somewhere because the water seemed to go back for miles.

Maybe this was my gilded cage or something while a maniac had me locked up—I gasped again when I realized who must have kidnapped me. Kota…

  Chapter Three

  Kota

Kota stepped out of the glass surround of his cleansing shower and quickly dried himself before he loosely wrapped a soft white covering around his waist. He did not want to alarm Vanessa, but he didn’t want his intentions to go unnoticed either. After all, Vanessa was his wife now and his need to consummate their marriage was insistent. This way, they would become proper soul mates, connecting on the most intimate of levels.

Kota walked from the bathing room and into his bedroom, fully expecting to find Vanessa asleep and nestled in his bed. Instead, he saw that she was already awake and sitting up, staring out at the sky wide eyed and in shock. Kota glanced up at the full moons. It was a rare occasion that both cycles of the moons fell in sync. Kota took it as a good sign for him and his newfound mate.

“They are beautiful; don’t you think?” Kota asked as he walked over to the bed. Vanessa yelped in surprise and she turned to face him, her eyes falling to Kota’s naked torso and sliding back up to his face. She wanted him, but as always, she was fighting it. Kota would make her choice less difficult.

“Um…uh…” Vanessa stuttered over her words and Kota kept his eyes on hers while he got into the bed, climbing over her and pressing a kiss to her neck as his advance forced her to lie back.

Kota’s mouth slid from the jumping pulse under the sensitive skin of her neck to her collar and lower still, until he pulled one puckered nipple into his mouth. He bit down gently and teased her nipple with his tongue through the thin material of the nightgown she had been dressed in. Vanessa took in a shaky breath and held back a moan as Kota’s lips slid back up to her neck. Sucking on her fragrant skin, his lips sliding up to take hers in a kiss.

Kota pressed his body into hers, still not bearing all of his weight down on her, but just enough that she felt his hardness at the joining of her thighs. Vanessa broke the kiss and gasped for air as she pushed him off of her. Kota could have easily stayed against her pushing him, but he did not want to frighten her.

“What are you doing? Where am I?” Vanessa asked breathlessly, her eyes were wide with a number of mixed emotions. Kota studied her and saw that the chief of them was fear, and quickly anger was pushing to the surface.

“You kidnapped me!” Vanessa yelled at Kota and he sighed before sitting back on his heels.

“Calm down, you will come to no harm and you are safe here.” Kota said simply. His calm reply seemed to anger her further. Vanessa showed him her hand and the wedding band he put on her finger when they were married.

“You need to explain everything, including this…this wedding band! On my finger!” She said angrily.

Kota found it refreshing that she had so much spirit, but soon it would wear on his nerves as his body yearned for hers.

“I brought you back to my home, Titus, we are no longer on Earth. There is no need to worry though, as atmospheric and orbital conditions are largely similar here and you will live just as long as you would on Earth if not longer.” Vanessa looked out at the full moons as the truth of reality dawned on her.

“I found you from worlds away and knew you would be mine. We are soul mates and I brought you here to live with me as my wife…and now we must consummate.” Kota told her frankly before leaning forward to kiss her, Vanessa lifted her chin at the last moment and Kota ended up kissing her jaw. He wanted to growl with frustration.

“I need you to not touch me right
now. I’m sure you can imagine how I must be feeling. You’re a stranger for goodness sake, how can I be married to someone I don’t know and expected to…have sex with you!” Her frustration was mounting and Kota took a deep breath as he attempted to restrain himself for her benefit.

“Fine, what is it you want to know?” Kota said, his annoyance rising. Vanessa’s jaw dropped, as she looked at him, incredulous.

“Are you annoyed with me? Out of all possible scenarios of this twisted moment, you’re annoyed with me?” Vanessa moved away from him and got out of Kota’s bed. They were moving backwards; Kota had planned on being buried deep inside her by then.

“You are not behaving as a wife should. I find that trying.” Kota replied and Vanessa surprised him by laughing. Perhaps she was hysterical?

“You kidnapped me, brought me to another planet, married me while I wasn’t cognizant, and now you’re annoyed that I’m not behaving like some docile pet?” Kota nodded, yes that seemed about right.

“I know you sense the force between us. It must be acted upon, that is why you are my wife now, it is why we are soul mates.” Vanessa looked at him in utter confusion and exasperation.

“The force? Now we’re in some sci-fi nightmare?” Vanessa was trying Kota’s patience, never had he known a female to be so outspoken. It might have been refreshing if it wasn’t so annoying at the moment. Kota wanted to make love to Vanessa, not argue with her.

“Stop your yelling and listen to me. I will explain my culture and where you fit into my life so that your hysterics can subside.” Kota spoke firmly with Vanessa and she quieted, staring at him with wide eyes.

Kota took a steadying breath; he wouldn’t let Vanessa stir his ire. All she needed was a firm hand and that was what he would provide.

“You are on Titus, in the Zodiac Galaxy neighboring your old home in the Milky Way, why your kind chose to call it that we could never fathom. In this galaxy, there are three habited planets, Titus being one of them. For a long time, we were all at intergalactic war. Until my father and I found the cause of the constant aggressions and put an end to the true source of warfare. Privateering is a nasty business, but since we put an end to the pirates and the warfare ceased, Titus now has to face rebuilding.”
