Chapter 1
"Come on man—I really need your help with this."
Daniel de Ruiz's voice was filled with pleading as he followed his friend Chris into his kitchen, watching as the man made himself a sandwich. Chris was promptly ignoring him, humming a tune lightly to himself as he pulled various items from the fridge. Why was he being so stubborn? All he wanted was a little advice, advice he knew Chris could give. When it came to matters of the heart, there was no one more educated than Chris, no one more skilled.
Daniel had never been more stuck than when it came to women, to dating. He had enough money to buy himself his own small country, not including the one he would inherit, yet somehow couldn't figure out a way to get the girl he wanted. Beautiful, intelligent, strong—she was everything he didn't know he needed in a woman. From her mint green eyes, to her short curls framing her face in adorable auburn waves. She took his breath away the instant he stepped into the café at which she worked.
She was one of the few women who could almost reach his height, standing at 5' 10". Which was nice, since he dwarfed most woman at his height of 6' 5".
"You've been raised to run a country with millions of citizens, yet you can't even handle a simple date," Chris downright cackled, taking a bite of his sandwich before saying out a muffled, "How pathetic are you?"
Daniel gave him a look of pure dismay, clasping his hands in front of his face pleadingly, "Please, Chris? Please just help me out a little."
Chris smirked, leaning against the long countertop as he said in a foreboding tone, "You must be truly desperate if you're coming to me for help."
The stare Daniel gave him in return was as dry as the desert, "Than you know that I would only resort to you in desperation?"
"Ouch." Chris winced in mock pain, "Now you're making fun of me and invading my home—you're soiling our friendship garden."
"Chris—," Daniel gave him a look of pure disbelief, his face growing a little flustered, "I paid the deposit on this apartment for you!"
"...Shit, you're right," Chris realized, his expression growing blank.
"Chris, focus!"
"Danny you know I'm just playing with you," Chris snickered lightly, slinging his arm around his friend's shoulder, "It was so worth your expression. Priceless."
"So you'll help me?" Daniel said in a weary tone, releasing a gusty sigh.
Chris smirked and shrugged, "Sure. Why not? Let me get my book for you."
Daniel frowned as his friend started heading for the bedroom, sandwich still in hand. "There's a book? Where are you going?"
Following behind him, Daniel found his friend digging through the pigsty he called a bedroom. Leaning against the doorframe, he waited patiently. He didn't know how much time past as he waited. Suddenly Chris called out, "Ah ha!"
He came to Daniel with a black notebook in hand. "This, my friend, contains the foolproof way to win the girl every single time."
Curious, Daniel took the book from his hand and began flipping through the pages. His raised his eyebrows as he realized every page in the book was written on, front and back. "When did you make this?"
"It took several years, filled with the many fails and successes of mine, until finally I figured out the best pattern, but I imagine it would still be a good idea for you to read from the beginning. Also, I have a few sections that gear towards certain type of women."
Looking his friend in the eye, Daniel said, "I don't simply want to sleep with this girl."
"Gosh, you make me seem like a manwhore. There are things in there for everyone, including guys like you who want to 'woo' a girl."
Daniel snorted as he turned his attention back to the book and went to the first page. Every woman he dated simply wanted him for his money, but he wanted Josie to fall head over heels in love with him. Him. Not his billions and billions of dollars or his many homes. Was it too much to ask for someone to like him for him?
With this hopefully, just maybe, Josie would be able to see Daniel for himself. Smiling Daniel looked up at Chris, "If this works, I will give you a million dollars."
Chris's eyes widen. "You're not joking are you? I mean you don't have to pay me, man. I would do anything for you. But really? A million dollars?"
Daniel rolled his eyes. "Yes, Chris. Believe. She is worth it."
Chris suddenly pulled him into a close hug. "You sure man? I love you. I'll even give you takes backsies."
"Yes, I'm sure." Daniel laughed, pulling away from him.
"And here's a tip that isn't in that book," Chris began as he turned toward the living room this time, "Don't tell her you're a prince."
Daniel frowned once more. "I don't want to lie to her from the start."
Chris waved his worry away with a hand. "It's not lying. It's a simple omittance. And this way, you'll know if the girl really likes you for you."
He guessed that would be true. The only problem was Daniel didn't know how to act not like a prince. He hadn't been poor his entire life. He wouldn't call himself snobbish, but he had lived a privileged life and wasn't sure how to not make it show. So used to offering to buy things for people, so used to being quick to jump at picking up the tab for things. It was in his nature to be nice.
Chris arched a brow at his conflicted expression, "You don't even know how to act poor, do you?"
Daniel simply gave him a gaze of pure helplessness. Chris smirked, finishing off his sandwich in one huge bite. "Well there goes me being lazy for the next few hours. Time to start my lessons—first, the intro of 'how to act poor'".
Chapter 2
Josie let out a pent up sigh as she finally entered the kitchen. The lunch crowd was rough today. She had gotten yelled at twice. A lady looked down her fake new nose at her after rudely insulting her. A
nd to top it off, one of her tables didn't even leave a tip, yet they paid over a hundred dollars for their meal. What was with today? All she wanted at the moment was to put her feet up for her fifteen and eat a chocolate bar.
"Hey, Jo, do you mind taking your break later? We're super busy today," Her boss, Laura said as she entered the kitchen as well.
Josie pouted at the older woman who simply pouted back. "Ugh!" Josie rolled her eyes and smiled. "You're lucky I love you."
Retying her apron back on, Josie picked up her notepad and headed back out to the wolves.
An half an hour later, Josie saw the person who put a smile on her face every day for the past two weeks walk through the front door. As she watched him from the register, she kept on praying that Alex placed him in her section again.
He was tall. So tall she could wear heels and not have to worry about it. Not that they were dating, but if they did. He had these dark mesmerizing grey eyes, high cheekbones and a strong jawline. His hair was a dirty blonde and cut just above his ears. Usually he wore it gelled back and neat but today it was messy mop on his head, and she thought it only made him look hotter.
And instead of his usual business suits, he was wearing a simple white t-shirt with a pair a blue jeans that conformed to his muscular body.
The only word she could simply use to describe his was "handsome as hell". Wait that was three words. Though the best thing about him was that he was stuck up and snobbish as most of the people that dined in this establishment. He didn't make her feel like less than human. He was sweet and kind. And his company would be refreshing on a day like this.
Josie couldn't help but smile as she watched Alex take him and her friend over to her section. Quickly grabbing two menu, she headed in that direction.
"Hi, how are you doing today?" She said in an honestly friendly tone, unlike the forced one she had been using all day, and smiled warmly, "My name is Josie, and I'll be your server. What can I get you to drink?"
He looked up at her when she stood by his little table, and if she wasn't mistaken his cheeks took on a bit of a flushed look. He seemed almost, embarrassed, awkward. It was a cute look, almost endearing. It made her smile more, though she didn't want to be too obvious about noticing.
He ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture, it would seem. Cute. "A uh...," He cleared his throat, and finished more calmly, "An iced coffee, please. Mocha."
She wrote it all down, feeling his gaze go back to her the instant she wasn't looking. If there was one thing she liked in a guy, it was honesty, and his genuine flustered reactions to her were enjoyable to say the least.
"Alright," She smiled kindly at him, looking into his grey gaze as she spoke, "I'll be right back with that coffee, sir—"
"—Daniel," He interjected suddenly, only to realize what he did and blush, looking away and mumbling, "I mean...My name is Daniel."
Josie felt herself smile again, "Okay. Daniel, then. I'll be right back with your coffee." She looked at the other man at his table, trying to appear just as friendly to him as well, although he wasn't her type, "And for you, sir?"
He flashed a wry grin at his friend, not even looking at her as he replied, "A latte for me, miss."
Turning on her heel she made her way back to the kitchen to get their drinks, fighting giggling on the way back. Cute guys were the best. She couldn't wait to tell Laura he was back—and she couldn't wait to make him the best cup of iced coffee he had ever had. He had improved her mood dramatically, a fact that was obvious as she hurried her way over to the coffee machine.
Laura, who was busy making Paninis and sandwiches for the lunch rush, rose a brow at her.
"Alright, spill—who's the guy?"
Josie laughed at the knowing look Laura gave her, rushing to prepare his drink as she replied, "Remember the one guy who came in, the dirty blonde?"
"The one with a great butt? Hell yes I remember."
Josie snorted a laugh, "Oh my god, Laura."
"What?" The woman in question shrugged, "It was noticeable. Anyway, he's back?"
"He sure is." Josie sighed, sounding smitten even to her own ears, "He's adorable, Laura. He's sitting out there with some other guy. His name is Daniel, apparently."
Laura peered out through the little kitchen window so she could look at the seating area, letting out a low whistle once she spotted the two, "Oh boy. His friend is a hottie too. What's his name?"
"Didn't catch it."
Laura made a tsk-ing sound at her, "For shame, Josie."
The woman shrugged in response, finishing the iced coffee and starting next on the latte, "I'll get it for you later."
Chapter 3
"You are a complete and utter failure. Are you positive you can run a country," Chris said with a shake of his head.
Daniel glared at the other man. "It's any help with you sitting over there grinning at me the entire time. Why don't you just leave?"
"And not be able to watch you continue to skid along down the street of failure? Nah. I think I'll stay and enjoy."
It was definitely a bad idea to have brought the other man with him. Daniel was already nervous enough as it was. Now his so-called best friend was going to be constantly teasing him mercilessly as he built of the courage to go through with this plan. He only had to pretend to be something he wasn't. It wasn't that hard, right? Lucky for him, the cheapest item on the menu was his usual order.
Except that's what was bothering him—the thought of acting like something he wasn't made him nervous, uneasy. It felt like he was deceiving her and he hadn't even lied yet.
Chris rolled his eyes at the look Daniel wore, a smirk playing on the edges of his lips, "Just chill out man—she seems to like you enough. Just play it cool."
Daniel let out a weary sigh, placing his head on his hands as he tried to settle his nerves.
"Look alive, Danny. She's heading back with the bill," Chris chuckled, kicking him lightly under the table, "Play it cool, and ask her out while I go pay."
Daniel instantly sat up straight, letting out a slow breath as he caught sight of the girl making her way back to them.
"Okay," He muttered.
Josie came to their table and place the small black book down. "Here's the bill. Is there anything else I can do you today?" She asked in her sweet, lithe voice.
Without a word, Chris picked up the book and walked off, giving Daniel the privacy to ask Josie out. Mustering up his courage, Daniel began to speak quickly before she walked off. "Josie, this might seem a little forward, but I'm very interested in you and I was hoping you would allow me to take you out on a date tonight."
She stared down at him looking slightly surprised. When she bit her lip Daniel just knew she was going to turn him down. Damn. He really should have went elsewhere for dating advice. Opening his mouth, he was about to assure her it was okay if she didn't want to go when she finally spoke.
"I'd love that."
Daniel blinked. She said yes. She was smiling. And she said yes. It took everything to in him not to ask her if she was positive. He didn't want her to suddenly change her mind.
She pulled her notebook from her apron pocket and began to write on it. Then she tore off a sheet and handed it to him. "That's my number. I get off work at five, so just call me then."
"I definitely will," Daniel said quickly, only to flush with embarrassment when he realized how eager he sounded, "I mean...uh....see you then."
She smiled lightly at his words, placing her hand on his shoulder briefly as she replied, "See you later, Daniel." Before walking back toward the kitchen. If Daniel wasn't mistaken, there was a bit of a hop in her step.
His heart was pounding in his chest as it registered just what he held in his hands, the slip of paper seeming unreal for a moment. He had really done it, he had gotten her number. She had even said yes to a date, which was incredible all on its own. Daniel instantly stood, walking swiftly over to the counter where Chris was flirting with the cashier taking their money, qui
ckly pulling his friend away and out the door.
"Hey, woah," Chris sputtered, twisting around to face him, "How did it go?"
"She said yes," Daniel replied, beaming from ear to ear, "I have a date with her tonight."
Chris let out a stage gasp, sounding completely over-dramatic as he exclaimed, "You actually did it! By god, my friend actually wrangled himself a date! A Christmas miracle."
Daniel felt his cheeks heat up as he punch his friend in the arm who only continued to laugh. It wasn't like this was his first date, yet he still felt nervous about it. Trying to calm his racing heart, Daniel sighed as they reached his car.
