Firework Kisses and Summertime Wishes: A Fabulous Feel Good Holiday Romance (Fourth of July on Kissing Bridge Mountain) Page 8

by Linda West

Elle pulled out a piece of fried chicken from her pocket and waved it.

  “What’s that?” he asked.

“Undeniable bait,” Elle said. “That’s what Ms. Landers said.”

War Hero was a mushball in Elle’s lap now settling in for a nap. Dayton reached over and tried to move him but he wouldn’t budge.

Dayton couldn’t help but double over and laugh as he watched Elle petting him as if he weren’t the evil dog they both knew him to be.

Watching the two of them together made him feel truly hopeful, for the first time in a long time.

If that old dog could open up and let Elle in maybe anything was possible.

Maybe, just maybe, they could be a real family.

If War Hero could change, maybe he could too.

He looked at them and he sighed.

The sight of the two of them together melted any resolve he still held. He might be a gonner but he wasn’t going to be a coward.

  “Now what?” he said laughing.

“Now we go back to Kissing Bridge, and you stay?” Elle said hopefully.

Dayton took her into his arms.

Which was not an easy thing to do now that War Hero was glued to her lap and refused to leave.

  He kissed her tenderly.

“I will stay. On one condition.”

Elle raised a brow and guessed.

  “No more riding Lightning?”

  He shook his head.

  “No more being single.”

Elle looked deeply into his dark brown eyes.

“I want you to marry me, Elle. I might not be the best guy but I will try my best for you and our family every day. I promise.”

Elle’s green eyes alit almost as bright as the exploding fireworks around her and she squealed with delight.

  “Marry you?!”

They embraced as the fireworks finale went off behind them in the shape of a heart with two silver wedding rings. The Vanderlings had bought them special just in honor of Dodi and Jason’s wedding.

Now, as the beautiful firework rings shone in the sky above them, Elle knew it was the perfect symbol of the beginning of a new life for them as well.

“Yes, darling! Yes, I will marry you. Yes!”
