Life at the Ranch
Page 21
“Sometimes women tell their children, or other women, about the wonderfully romantic night when he proposed to her; how he took her out for a special dinner, or he cooked her a dinner and they ate by candlelight, soft music playing in the background, a dozen roses on the table beside them. Me? I can't tell anyone, except maybe Kayla. I screwed up, and he spanked me until I felt like I was sitting on a stove instead of his lap, and then he proposed.”
She giggled again as she looked at him, but this time he saw the love in her eyes. “So, brat, does that mean you will marry me?”
“There's one thing I need to make clear here. I am not a brat. But I would love to be Mrs. Bo Thomas Hamilton, so yes, I will marry you.”
“Thank you,” he said, right before capturing her lips with his for a very serious, very loving kiss, which he controlled completely. She smiled to herself as she realized that, and realized that she was good with it. In fact, she could now admit it was good for her, and it had a lot to do with how happy she'd been. And he was right; she did trust him. She trusted him enough to let him control things, because she knew now it really was in her best interests.
As he ended the kiss, he had one more comment. “And for the record, yes, you are a brat. But you're my brat and I love you.” He kissed her one more time. “But now, my brat, we really should be getting back to the ranch.”
“Before we go, I need to ask you something.”
“What's that?”
“Do you really have to call me Garnet?”
He was about to apologize, not realizing she disliked it that much, when he heard a very light giggle. He looked up and saw a tiny smile at the corners of her mouth. It was difficult, but he put a stern look on his face. “Yes, I do. Anytime you misbehave, young lady, you can expect to be called Garnet.” He tried to look away before she saw his smile, but didn't quite succeed.
“I see that smile,” she accused.
“Maybe,” he allowed, “but you probably will hear that name when you misbehave.”
“If, not when. What makes you so sure I will ever misbehave?”
She hit his shoulder when he outright laughed. “Come on, honey. Are you ready to go yet?”
“So I can tell them how you twisted my arm until I said I'd marry you?”
“Did you just try to convince me you're not a brat?”
She giggled. “I know, I know. But seriously, I can tell the world you're really going to marry me, can't I?”
“Only the ones I don't tell first,” he said with a grin.
She went in the bathroom and washed her face, then Bo followed her home. He was at her door, helping her out, and had to smile at how eager she seemed to stand. “A bit sore, future Mrs. Hamilton?”
She was frowning, but smiled when she heard the Mrs. Hamilton part. “You should know, Mr. Hamilton.”
They were smiling as they walked into the house hand in hand. Maria met them at the door. “You two have to be hungry. Sit down, I've kept it warm for you.”
“Thank you, Maria. You didn't need to do that for us.”
Wyatt and Kayla appeared in the doorway and Bo invited them to join them. “I assume you've already eaten, but why don't you come in and have a seat. We have some news you may want to hear. I'll be right in.”
Wyatt looked at Alicia, who was smiling. “News? What kind of news?”
Bo came jogging back into the kitchen and said, “Sit down and you'll see.” He walked over and slid a pillow onto Alicia's chair as he pulled it out for her.”
Kayla looked at the pillow on the chair and said, “Oh, no, not again. I was afraid of that.”
Alicia, who was still ecstatic, giggled again. “Not to worry. I deserved it, and I'm fine. But we have some news.”
Wyatt glanced at the pillow. “It must be good news. Otherwise, I can't imagine Bo allowing you to use a pillow, let alone going to get it himself.”
“It is good news,” Bo assured him.
“So what is it?”
Bo had a proud grin on his face and was about to answer, when the little minx beside him beat him. “We're getting married!”
Her sudden statement got everyone's attention, including Maria's, but they all also saw the look on his face, when she beat him with the announcement. They looked from his look of shock to her look of achievement and pride, and all three of them laughed.
Kayla got up to congratulate Alicia, as did Maria. The three of them were hugging, doing a little dance, as Wyatt thumped Bo on the back. “Congratulations, Bo.” He lowered his voice a little. “You are going to have your hands full, my friend.”
“That I am,” he agreed. “And I'm looking forward to every minute of it.”
Wyatt kissed Alicia's cheek. “Congratulations, Alicia. I'm happy for both of you. You're both good people, and you belong together.”
“Thank you, Wyatt.”
Bo took his fiancé back from her uncle's arms and wrapped his arms around her. “I think we belong together, too, Garnet.”
They both smiled, but she rolled her eyes dramatically. “Garnet, really? Already? Is that what life on the ranch is going to be like?”
“Absolutely, my adorable little brat,” he answered with a grin. He hugged her tighter as he whispered, “And Garnet will get her cute little bottom warmed when she deserves it.”
Mischief was still in her eyes as she tried to correct him. “I believe you mean if?”
“No, my dear, I said what I meant; when.” He kissed her again before asking, “Looking forward to life on the ranch?”
He could easily see the love in her eyes as she answered him. “Absolutely.”
