Stop, Don't Stop

“You want to know what Cilla Wright is?” Posie said. “She’s a flat wave.” She put out one hand, palm down, and drew it through the air in a straight line.
All I wanted was to change the subject.
“How’s Thorne?” I said, speaking of flat waves. I had this sudden desire to tell her about how I’d seen Thorne with Luna. I really, really, really wanted to. But I couldn’t. I mean, the minute I mentioned Thorne’s name, Posie’s face lit up.
“He’s great! He’s such a sweetie! You know he bought me these earrings?” She showed me her earrings, which were a pair of little mermaids. They looked cheap, but they were kind of cute.
“Where is he right now? Is he meeting you here or something?” I asked her.
“No, he’s over at Luna’s,” she said. “They’re making this big presentation together in Spanish.”
“Oh, really?” I said. How can Posie be so smart about everything and not know what Thorne is up to? Maybe she has like, a low boy IQ and a high IQ for everything else.
“Yeah,” said Posie. “They’re really into it.”
I didn’t say anything; I just stood there like an idiot.
“What are you thinking, Jonah?” she said.
“Nothing,” I said.
“Nothing means something,” Posie said.
“No, it’s really nothing,” I said. “Listen, I gotta go.”
“Hey, come on. What’s up?” Posie said.
“I said it’s nothing. Can’t it be nothing up when I say it’s nothing? Why does nothing have to be something all the time? Why can’t nothing be nothing?” I said, annoyed.
After this incredibly suave speech I headed to the counter with the Lemon CD but when I got there I realized no way was I buying it, so I just left it on the counter and went outside. As I walked through the door I looked over my shoulder, and Posie was staring at me with this strange expression on her face. She looked sad.
The whole way back to Avalon Gardens on my bike I was thinking the ride would probably be a hell of a lot faster if I had a Harley.
About the Author
Jonah Black grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida. He attended boarding school in Pennsylvania until recently when, under shrouded circumstances, he was kicked out, and has since been picking up the pieces of his shattered life. His favorite pastimes include hanging out with his best friends, Thorne and Posie, checking out the Florida chicks, daydreaming about the Florida chicks, and writing in his journal. Jonah is not as modest as he first appears. He really is a stud.
