“How could you just turn your back on your passion like that?”
Christ, does nothing I say ever get through?
“It’s not my passion, Dad. I don’t know how many times I have to say that—I don’t like the piano. YOU like the piano. YOU and MUM love the piano—I don’t.”
He shook his head in annoyance, throwing his arms in the air above him and then slapping his palms back down on the table. Now he was being a child.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do with you,” he fumed. “You’re just being impossible.”
I chuckled. What an overreaction to a pot of nothingness. “You don’t have to do anything with me. I’m not a child—remember? Those days of being able to control me are gone.”
“So, who was that woman anyway? What about Sophia? You were with her for years—why didn’t you marry her? Didn’t she love you?”
Great. Now it was time to pull apart my personal life. Cue the Halleluiah Chorus.
“She loved me more than anyone.”
“So?”
I sighed. “She bored me.”
His lips curled down like they were trying to take shelter beneath the wobbling folds of his neck. “You can’t just shun everything to one side when you get bored of it; that’s no way to act. Who do you think you are?”
Fucking awesome.
“Can you get to the point of why you’re here?” I laughed. This guy, my father, was a real toad of a man. Far better squashed under the tyre of a car than anywhere else.
“Well, we didn’t want it to come to this, but we feel like we no longer have any other choice.”
I rolled my eyes. Here we go. “In what?”
“Our wills.”
“What about them?” I tried to contain the edge of my lip from lifting, but I couldn’t help myself. I had to smirk; it would have been criminal not to.
