“Part of the program for DID is to have the patients describe who they see in their minds physically. I thought this method was particularly groundbreaking especially for Yvonna since she’d taken on her father’s personality. So how do we know every personality she sees, isn’t coming from a real person?”
“We don’t.” Jona adds.
Everyone is interested because they know it’s going somewhere big.
“Well?” Lily says eying the rolled up sketch. She had gained twenty pounds and everyone was amazed at how beautiful she was. She grew her hair out and favored Eva Mendez a lot. “Show us!”
“One second,” he says with his hand out. “Well…when they finished with Yvonna, and she gave the artist the details necessary to create a composite drawing of Gabriella, this is what they came up with.” He unrolls the sketch and lays it down flat on the table. They all look at it and then back at one another.
“It can’t be,” Guy says looking at the sketch and than back at Terrell.
“So you remember this case?” Terrell inquires.
“Remember it, it was all over the fucking news!”
“I don’t remember this,” Jona says.
“If you gonna hang out with cops you got to know the cases,” Lily starts. “This little girl wandered into a Baptist church in DC on a Sunday morning about twenty somethin’ years ago. The congregation referred to her as an angel because she seemed to have come from the sky. She was there every Sunday for six months faithfully and would always be hungry and dirty.”
“Where were her parents?” Jona persists.
“Whenever they would ask her,” Guy picks up. “She’d tell them she’d get in trouble if she told them their names. So they kept her secret, fed and took care of her until one Sunday she didn’t show up.”
Jona eyes sadden. “So what they do?”
“They were devastated.” Lily continues. “They had gotten so use to taking care of her that they’d built a room in the basement of their church for her and everything. She was the church’s daughter. They’d bought clothes for her and would send her off with packaged snacks. They said she always took two of everything when she left. It was like she was looking out for somebody else.
“Anyway, they reported her missing and the media went mad. They hired a forensic artist and with Pastor Robinson’s help, they drew the little girl’s picture.” She points at the drawing on the table. “It looked awfully like this and it was put up everywhere. They raised a million dollar reward to find her.”
“Oh my God.” Jona says. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” Terrell says. “They never found her and the church was never the same.”
Jona looks at the picture trying to remember something. “What was her name?”
Chill bumps run through their spines when they realized that even the name was the same. “G…Gabriella.” Terrell manages. “They called her Gabriella.”
Silence. “But she looks older in this picture.” Peter says. “The same eyes, and even the same face but just older. How is this possible?”
“Maybe she knew her. All I know is we have to find out.” Terrell ends.
In A Ritzy Maryland Home Development “Did you feed, Spike?” Lavera Aniston, a 26-year-old African American woman asks her son, as she turns over steaks on the grill in their backyard. She knows if they don’t feed their dog, he’ll want theirs.
“No, mommy,” Quentin says, playing with his portable game. “He’s eating.”
Lavera walks to the dog’s house and screams when she see’s him chewing a white female’s hand.
