For the Love of Money

Hopefully, Eveline will know in the depth of her being that she is loved unconditionally and will pass that love on to her children, and they on to theirs, and so on and so on until that love is the only remaining vestige of our brief but meaningful lives.

Writing and publishing this book has been an amazing journey, one that would not have started if not for Linda Redford, who suggested I write it, and supported me throughout the process. And, as you know by now, I would not be where I am today without Linda’s guidance and teaching, and I will be forever grateful to her.
Thank you to my friend Joe Spiccia, a rock of support and a terrific and repeated reader. Thank you to Kurt Halvorson and Jerry Cudzil, who loved this book from the beginning, and whose friendship has meant more to me than they know.
Thank you to my agent, Sam Stoloff, who saw the potential in this book when few did. Thank you to Daniel Burgess at Scribner for buying this book. And thank you to John Glynn, my final editor at Scribner, for his vision and confidence in bringing this book to its right structure and full potential.
Thank you to Kristen Peterson, the first-ever reader of a draft of this book, without whose gentle encouragement I may never have become a writer.
Thank you to Jennie Nash, first my writing teacher at UCLA and then my independent editor for the last six years, whose honesty and incisive edits have made everything I’ve written better. I do not publish anything without her reading it first. To all writers or aspiring writers, I recommend Jennie.
Thank you to Carole Desanti, my earliest supporter in the world of publishing.
Thank you to the following readers for your insight, suggestions, and encouragement: Rob Robertson, Tristine Rainer, Michael Cassidy, Emily Wolf, Patrick Mulligan, Christina McDowell, Todd Rosenberg, Peter Huzzardi.
Thank you to Geneen Roth, whose late-inning suggestions made this a stronger book, and whose friendship and guidance I value deeply.
Thank you to Michael Meyer, whose kindness and generosity continue to amaze me, even today. Michael, I am grateful to have you in my life.
Thank you to my mom, who had the patience and love to work through everything with me, and who has become a treasured part of my life.
Thank you to my brother Daniel for his friendship and support.
Thank you to my sister, Julia, who brings so much laughter and joy into my life, and whom I love very deeply.
Thank you to my twin brother, Ben, for all the reads, and all the conversations, and for being my constant companion on this incredible journey.
And most of all thank you to my wife, Kirsten, for her patience, faith, and support. And to our daughter, Eveline, who shows me every day that I have not yet reached my capacity for love.
