Murderous Mummy Wars

“Maybe.” I remembered meeting the three girls for the first time when Mikey was a baby. I’d had to keep them from trampling him and had spent the entire dinner at my in-laws’ house being terrified they’d do something to him. “Anyway, it will be nice for them to visit at Christmas this year.”

Desi nodded. “Mom’s trying to convince Sarah to come up here too.”

“I haven’t seen her in years.” Both of Adam’s other siblings lived too far away for frequent visits, and with two little kids, we hadn’t made a strong effort to visit them either. I glanced at the kids in their costumes. It was hard to believe it would be Christmas in less than two months. “I love Ericksville at Christmas. The decorated tree in Lighthouse Park, the pretty lights they put up downtown—everything.”

  “Me too.”

We both looked over at the kids, so happy with their dads.

“Don’t you just want to soak it in sometimes?” Desi asked. “They’ll be over the whole trick-or-treating thing before we know it.”

“I know.” I looked over at Mikey, who was fooling around with his cousin. “I’m always reminded of that saying, ‘the days are long but the years are short.’ They may be little stinkers sometimes, but we just need to enjoy them while they still want us around.”

“Yep,” Desi said. “I try to remind myself of that when Anthony throws a tantrum about putting his shoes on.”

Adam and Tomàs came over to us with the boys.

“I think they’re ready to call it quits,” Tomàs said. Both boys were dragging a little and I wondered if we’d make it home before they collapsed.

Adam and I said goodbye to Desi and family, and they turned off toward their house while we walked up the hill toward ours.

“I think that went well,” Adam said happily.

“We survived Halloween and the haunted house.” I suddenly felt better about everything. This last month had been tough, but now I had Christmas to look forward to and nothing was going to spoil that for me.
