  “Playing fair?” Paula echoed.

Jay thumped his fist on Tim’s thigh again, eliciting a stifled yelp from him before he answered, “Yes! He wants me to go there once a week from now on, and he ignores that I don’t want to go. Isn’t that right, Timothy?”

  “That’s right, Jayden.”

“I don’t want to go! What’s so hard to understand about it?”

  “Nothing.”

“Nothing? Why are you forcing me to go back, then?” Jay asked.

  “Because it’ll help you cope.”

  “No, it won’t.”

Patiently, Tim replied, “Yes, it will.”

“It will not. It’ll only make me cry and angry.”

“Maybe that’s what’s going to help?” Tim suggested.

  “It’s not helping,” Jay snarled.

Peter lifted Robin off his lap and stood him up. He followed quickly, smiled, and said, “If you would excuse us? I believe this is a matter you should talk about privately. Robin and I will spend our time… differently.”

“This sounds like a good opportunity to leave the battlefield,” Ralf chimed in. He helped Paula up and guided her toward the kitchen.

“Nooo, don’t leave me all alone with Jay!” Tim shouted.

Seconds later, he dissolved into laughter. Robin looked back to where Jay sat astride on Tim’s lap, lightly drumming his fists on Tim’s chest. It wasn’t a mean-spirited attack, though, because Jay grinned at Tim.

“They will be fine,” Peter whispered into his ear.

“What about Jay? Will he ever recover fully?”

“He’ll heal as well as possible. We will support him,” Peter said.

“What about you? Do you regret leaving your clan?” Robin asked as they followed his parents into the kitchen. He closed the door behind them, cutting off Tim’s chuckles.

“Robin, I explained to you that were-bears don’t have such strong family bonds as werewolves. It is fine. I’m where I want to be—with you. I waited so long for you, and I already spent a fair amount of time with my clan members. I have no regrets.”

“Okay. You might have to repeat that statement from time to time.”

Peter smiled at him, then pressed a kiss on a dimple. “I will reassure you however often you need me to.” Lowering his voice, he rumbled, “I’d like to reassure you more intimately right now. How would you like that?”

Turning in Peter’s embrace, Robin slung his arms around Peter’s neck. Robin flicked his tongue against Peter’s lips, teasing them open, and moaned when Peter’s tongue touched his.

He was about to delve deeper into Peter’s mouth when Paula cleared her throat. “How about you two go upstairs?”

“How about they start looking for an apartment or house soon?” Ralf muttered.

“We will abide your wish and start looking for different accommodations tomorrow,” Peter said.

  “Good.”

Peter turned Robin around, and hand-in-hand they re-entered the living room. A glance to the sofa showed them Tim and Jay were deeply engrossed in a conversation that also included a lot of kissing and touching.

They tiptoed up the stairs to Robin’s room and locked the door behind them. Peter pulled his shirt over his head, then did the same for Robin. “You didn’t tell me how your parents reacted when you told them you’re going to drop out of college this afternoon.”

“That’s what you’re thinking about right now? What’s wrong with you?”

Peter squeezed Robin’s buttocks and ground their groins together. “I would like to know.”

“They weren’t surprised. Actually they seemed relieved because now they know that Tim, Jay, you, and I will keep what they worked so hard to build up. They want to spend some time traveling, they said, and now they don’t have to worry about the horses. It’s all good. But now less talking, more fucking.”

Peter fastened his hands on Robin’s hips, a disapproving look on his face. Robin swallowed, then smiled. “Oops! Okay, okay. Would you please do me the honor and make love to me?”

  “It will be my pleasure.”

LATER THAT evening, when they lay together with their legs entwined, Robin enjoyed the sensation of Peter’s beard on his shoulder. As his gaze roamed around the room, it got stuck on the shelf above his bed.

He pointed upward and said, “Somehow I must have known that a bear would become important in my life.”

Peter lifted his eyes to follow where Robin pointed. “That is… a toy.”

“Yeah. No one remembers who gave it to me, but I’ve had it since I was a baby. My mother has repaired it endless times already.”

“It doesn’t quite look like a bear.”

“Nope, it looks like a mix between a bear and a wolf. Just like you in your shifted form.”

Peter propped himself up on an elbow and looked down at Robin. He stroked his fingers along Robin’s cheek, a light, fluttering touch that sent shocks of desire through Robin’s body.

  “Fate,” Peter said, smiling.

“Fate,” Robin echoed. Plucking up all his courage, Robin steeled himself to say the words he hadn’t said so far except once—and that one time didn’t count because he hadn’t voiced them deliberately. “Hey, Peter? I love you.”

“I love you too, my angel,” Peter replied, his eyes softening so much Robin’s breath caught in his throat.

Robin dipped his head to press a lingering kiss on Peter’s lips, then smiled. Peter shifted on the bed until he lay on his back with Robin tucked close. Robin exhaled, a deep, relieved sigh, and closed his eyes. Soon he drifted off in a content sleep, knowing Peter would keep him safe.
