Lessons from a One-Night Stand

Before arriving in Florida we knew the series would be about family in Alaska who probably owned a lumber company. At least, I think we were going with family, but still not completely sure (granted, we were probably knee deep in another series. Oh, yes, Rayne was finishing up writing and Piper was editing Crushing on the Cop so we’d make the deadline for our editor. I don’t even think we had named the town yet. No… we hadn’t because one night we threw names out as we sat in our hotel room. Before Lake Starlight there was Bears Landing, Twin Rivers, Kings Crossings. I love looking back at our notes after we finish writing a book because the story NEVER ends up where we started.
Anyway, after the conference (we’re sure this is the same for anyone when they love their job), after the lectures and workshops we were inspired and revved up to plot this next series.
Rayne was sitting in a class presented by Jennifer Lynn Barnes by herself—because we tend to divide and conquer to gain more knowledge. As Jennifer was talking, her mind was on the new series. Jennifer said people probably love what you love. It got her thinking of the family dynamics she loves in television or in books. Somewhere in her head, the sitcom Party of Five popped into a little bubble. When they got back to the room, Rayne pitched the idea of our family being orphans to parents who died years before (because this is a rom com after all). Piper and she loved it.
Then came hard the work. Titles and storylines and... everything that makes the book a book… everything that makes a series a series! If you think we struggled to name a town, can you imagine coming up with NINE similar titles? And NINE different siblings all with their own personalities?
Piper came up with Secrets of the World’s Worst Matchmaker first. Other possible titles we threw out there were Match Me, The Matchmaker who Miss Matched, Lies of a Matchmaker, Secrets of a Matchmaker. We then tried to find a title using the trope we were writing for each book. Sounds a lot easier than it was. Now that we see them all together, we’re in love! But there’s a time when you’re throwing things out there and they aren’t sticking that you think to yourself, this will never work.
But it did and before we left Florida we might not have had every story outlined but we had the gist of every story and all the Bailey siblings had names! As we sadly parted after the conference knowing we wouldn’t see each other’s beautiful faces until May 2019, we each were optimistic that we had a pretty great series coming your way!
And not for nothing but we LOVE this family! LOVE!!! Starting out on this new series we had our doubts but in the end we love the dynamic between all these siblings. Loss and love has made them a tightknit group, but like any family that means they know all the buttons to push to make you crazy. LOL
We both hope you loved Lessons from a One-Night Stand. Austin and Holly were so fun to write, as were all the Baileys and the town of Lake Starlight. Buzzwheel might be the most fun! Head on over to LakeStarlightBuzzWheel.com and check it out! ;)
As always, we have a long line of people to thank…
Danielle Sanchez and the entire Inkslinger family for spreading the word and so much more!
Ellie from My Brother’s Editor for first round edits.
Cassie from Joy Editing for second round edits.
Shawna from Behind the Writer for proofreading.
Sarah from Okay Creations for the cover and branding for the entire series.
Sara from Sara Eirew Photography for the hot picture of our ‘Holly’ and ‘Austin’.
Bloggers who carved out precious time to read, review and/or promote us.
Piper Rayne Unicorns who get just as giddy and excited as we do. Who spread the word about us and our books and who we’d be nothing without!
Readers who took a chance on our book when you have so many choices.
Mwah to everyone!
Oh wait, you need a tease…
Be on the lookout for Brooklyn Bailey’s book, Advice from a Jilted Bride next. We hate to see her heartbroken, but we’re pretty sure the guy moving in next door might just be Mr. Right. Of course, love’s journey is never as easy as that though, is it?
