The Belial Sacrifice

He reached the edge of the tree line and paused, leaning against a tree to give his shoulder a little break and to give him a chance to scan the area. Trees lined the river on both sides, which was twenty feet wide where he was. The other bank was higher and covered with large rocks. This side, there were very few rocks, making it a great spot for swimming in the warmer weather. Right now, the water meandered by slowly with no urgency. With the sun shining down, it looked incredibly peaceful.

No one seemed to be around, but the hair along his neck and arms refused to settle. He glanced around again. To get to the downed trees he’d have to travel open space. But there was no other option. He took a breath. It was now or never. He stepped from behind the tree just as an Unwelcome stepped from behind its own tree across the river.

  Acknowledgments

I cannot thank you, the reader, strong enough. Your interest in the Belial series changed my life. Thank you for staying with me through fourteen books. I hope you have found a little joy along the way.

Thank you to Crystal Wantanabe and your staff at Pikko’s House. Your editing advice and time has been beyond helpful. I appreciate the time and diligence you have all taken. And I look forward to our future work together.

Thank you to the staff at Damonza for the incredible cover for The Belial Sacrifice. Most of the covers from the Belial series have come from Damonza. Your work is such a standout. Thank you.

To the handful of people who have helped by reading or discussing aspects of the book I was struggling. Thank you for your input and your support.

To my kung fu family, thank you for always inspiring me and pushing me forward. And a special thanks for letting me bounce ideas off of you (and occasionally fists and sticks).

To my children. Life got better the moment you all showed up. It’s hard to imagine my life before you were in it. Thank you for making sure I step away from the computer and have a little fun. You are a constant reminder of what is actually important in this world.

To my husband. I never would have been able to go down this road without your support and love. You didn’t blink when I said I was going to write full-time. You simply asked what you could do to help. I am forever grateful for that and for having you in my life.

And finally, to my four furry writing companions: you are the best co-workers ever!
