A Nurse for Walter

He stared at her and his heart nearly burst with joy. “As long as I can watch your face light up the way it does, I’ll be forever satisfied.”

She swatted him playfully. “Good, then let’s put these pickets in place. I can hardly wait to see it laid out.”

It didn’t take long and Walter noticed Shannon favoring her injured side. He took her hand and led her to a huge rock and forced her to sit down. “I’ll place them according to our drawing and you can watch from here—maybe imagine a rock garden in the area you’re sitting—these boulders are too big to move.”

Shannon squealed. “I love gardening and will research all the plants that will thrive here. You are full of good ideas, Walter Franssen.”

  “I aim to please.”

When the layout was complete, Walter hurried over to the rock to procure his future bride. “Come with me. I have a surprise.”

They trekked inside the marked entrance to their unbuilt house, through the imagined grand foyer, around the area picketed where the steps to the upper floor would be placed, and into the parlor.

“Imagine there is a huge stone fireplace here against this wall,” he pointed toward an outside wall, “where we will spend many romantic evenings contemplating life’s changes.” He brought her to stand in front of the unconstructed hearth, withdrew a ring from his pocket, and dropped to one knee. “I know I have asked this question countless times, and you have answered it to my utter satisfaction, but I wanted to solidify it, so you could proudly show off the fact to everyone that you did indeed snag the good doctor’s heart.” He reached for her left hand. “Shannon Tyre, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife and living with me in this home for the rest of our lives together?”

Her smile ignited her features with an eagerness that caused his heart to skip a beat. “I can hardly wait, sir, to become Mrs. Shannon Franssen and move into our forever home.”

Walter slipped the diamond on her ring-finger and she gasped as she stared at the extravagant token of his love. He stood, and while she remained speechless, he took the opportunity to kiss her finger, long and slow, then succumbing to his passion, gathered her into his arms. She responded with like enthusiasm, looping her arms around his neck and welcoming his kiss that sealed their engagement.

In that intimate moment, he imagined himself to be the happiest man alive, realizing that love grew within a no-time zone, as if the courtship period halted the clock allowing affection to deepen to a pinnacle of sensation that he could barely comprehend. As the searching of their mouths continued to unleash their souls, he internally swore his vow to remain hers forever. The wedding ceremony would simply be an outward indication to what had already taken place—a commitment to one another for the rest of their God-given lives.
