Blaze didn’t say a word. As they walked the rest of the way inside, the host asked, “How many?”

  Rachel said, “Four.”

The man already had four menus he’d pulled out from under the podium where he’d been standing. “Right this way.”

As they followed him, Kaylee tried not to make any judgments about their mother. After all, the woman had given birth to two of Kaylee’s favorite people on the planet.

The host seated them, telling them their waiter would be with them momentarily. Blaze sat next to Kaylee and Rachel and their mom across from them. Kaylee found it disconcerting having Rachel sit next to their mother, because they looked so much alike. Blaze didn’t even open the menu like the others. Instead, he said, “Mom, it’s not pie in the sky. You don’t really think that, do you?”

The woman shrugged, but her attention was on the menu. “Son, I admire that you have all these lofty goals, but if you really think that you as one person can change the collective mind on the planet, you are fooling yourself. Live and let live and do what you can, but don’t kill yourself trying to change minds that are already made up. Life’s too short for that.”

“You’re wrong, mom. Change starts with the person. It starts with me, with you, with Rachel, with Kaylee.” The waiter approached their table and started to talk when Blaze said, “It starts with this guy, too.”

The blonde-haired twenty-something man acted a little sheepish, as though he’d done something wrong, but he said, “Can I get you folks something to drink?”

As they gave him their drink orders, Kaylee could feel Blaze tense up beside her. In just the few short minutes they’d spent with his mom, Kaylee could see that he got his laidback nature from her, but he was still passionate about what he wanted to do. Kaylee couldn’t understand why his mother was trying to discourage it. As the afternoon progressed, though, Kaylee finally figured it out. His mother wanted her son closer by. She lived on the east coast after having lived in Colorado Springs for twenty years, but nowadays she had a boyfriend who lived in Paris and kept her in the style she had apparently grown used to. Reading between the lines, Kaylee gathered that she didn’t used to be as globally minded as she was now, but Kaylee wasn’t going to ask.

After the salads arrived and Blaze had insisted they stop talking about his future career, their mother turned her attention on Kaylee. “So, Kaylee, what are you going to school for?”

  “Anthropology.”

“Any hopes of saving the planet?”

Was that a dig at the woman’s son? Kaylee swallowed, wondering what dynamic she’d been pulled into, but she noticed that neither Rachel nor Blaze seem fazed in the least by their mother’s question. Kaylee decided to play it low key, something she’d always been good at. “No. I’m afraid I don’t have the voice for that. I’m just following a line of fascination, Mrs., uh…”

The woman laughed. “Oh, no Mrs. for me. Please call me Madeline.”

Kaylee nodded. She wanted to let their mother know she fully supported her boyfriend, though, so after she said, “Okay, Madeline,” she forced herself to smile. As usual, she felt awkward around this new person, but she was determined to move forward. “I do have to say that I have learned a lot from Blaze, though, and his passion is hard not to get swept up in.” As soon as the words flew from her mouth, she hoped no one wondered if she was talking about his dedication to his chosen field or his sexual prowess.

Blaze was the one who replied. “Really?” She looked over at Blaze and she thought she’d never seen him so happy. She saw his eyes twinkling, like he wanted to say something else but wasn’t going to. But he gave her an innocent kiss and said to his mom, “She’s a keeper, isn’t she?”

His mother grinned as though she were amusing her son. Their food arrived then and Madeline asked, “Has Blaze met your parents yet?”

Kaylee thought that was an odd question and she wondered why their mother would even care, but she answered, “No. Rachel’s met them more than once, but not Blaze.” Part of her wanted to call him lucky, because as nervous as she’d been about meeting his mother, she was over-the-top scared about Blaze meeting her folks.

What gave her hope? Spending the afternoon with their mother made Kaylee see how they’d come from her stock but had changed and improved immensely upon the Donahue model. Kaylee knew from what Rachel had once told her that, in their youth, their mom had mostly been a single parent with the occasional boyfriend, but the three of them had lived with their grandparents for the longest time. Their mom had always been a bit of a free spirit, and Kaylee could see that streak in Blaze, but apparently Rachel was more like their grandmother, practical and down to earth.

Sitting at that table, Kaylee could appreciate and be grateful that their mother had brought them into this world and raised two wonderful human beings, but even more? She loved that they had become their own people. It set her mind wondering what Blaze would think of her parents…and she knew that fear would hover in the back of her brain until that encounter had passed.

Worse, though? She was scared shitless about what they would think of her boyfriend.

  Chapter Eighteen

JUNE FLEW BY faster than it had a right to. Near the end of the month, the four girls were drinking a bottle of wine and helping Shannon pack. Their friend had a job waiting for her in downtown Denver and had secured an apartment she could move into as soon as she got there. It was a Friday evening. Her job started on Monday, and she hoped to have the weekend to settle in. The girls wanted to spend one last evening together before their friend had to become a complete adult.

Kaylee felt sad that Shannon was leaving. She hadn’t known the woman at all when she’d moved in with them, but Kaylee had grown to love her as much as she had their other roommates.

Shannon was going through several stacks of papers she’d piled on the coffee table, packing a few in a box on the couch next to her but most were landing in the trashcan in front of her. The other girls were sitting in various other areas around the living room. Rachel asked, “Do you feel ready to be all grown up?”

  “No, not really.”

Maddy, seated on the floor, asked, “You excited to be living in the heart of Denver?”

Shannon shrugged. “Maybe. I think so. Or…I think I’ll get used to it.”

Kaylee said, “I don’t think I could ever get used to all the traffic.”

Rachel smiled. “You don’t think we have a lot of traffic here?”

“We do, yeah, but it just seems different. I don’t know.”

Maddy agreed. “I know what you mean. It’s different. It doesn’t take forever to get from one end of town to the other. It feels like you can breathe here.”

Rachel said, “Girls, let’s not ruin it for Shannon.”

“That won’t happen. I’m nervous about the job but I’m excited too.” She took a sip of her wine and then said, “I never did tell you why I think I got the job, did I?”

Maddy leaned forward and said, “No. Is there something big you need to tell us?”

Shannon laughed. “You could say that.”

Rachel slapped her hand on the coffee table. “Well, stop teasing us already. Out with it!”

Shannon covered her mouth with her hand as though she were going to spit out the wine in her mouth when she giggled. She placed her glass on the coffee table and set the papers down, lowering her voice as though she were plotting a conspiracy. “You guys remember Donnie?”

“The guy you were dating at Christmas?”

“Yeah, not this year but the year before.”

“Yeah, the first year we were here.”

“Yeah.” Shannon took a sip from her wine. “I think he’s the reason I got the job.”

  Maddy said, “Oh, that’s great!”

Shannon laughed. “Yes, but not for the reasons why you’d think.” She tilted her head back and roared with insane laughter. “He didn’t say a word in the interview, but later on, I ran into him in the elevator.

Rachel said, “Wait. Wait a second. Why didn’t we hear about this before?”

“Because I didn’t think it mattered. And I can’t really recall exactly what he said, but it was something about remembering how my mouth felt.”

Maddy squealed and then said, “Blowjob queen!”

Kaylee was once again out of her element, but she wanted to participate just the same. “Well, he could’ve meant kissing, right?”

“Of course…but the first time I gave him a blowjob, he told me it was the best one he’d ever had.”

“Sucker,” Maddy chimed. “They all say that. Anything for head.”

“Maybe they say it, but I’m thinking he meant it. I got the job, didn’t I?”

Rachel frowned. “He’s not going to be expecting sexual favors now, is he?”

“Oh, God, no, Rachel. It wasn’t like that at all. No…it was more like…a reconnection, you know. Like…a possibility. Like maybe we have a second chance.”

Maddy formed an O on her lips, but all the girls said a tribal Oh all together when they saw Maddy’s face, and then they started giggling in unison. Then Maddy said, “All thanks to the almighty blowjob. Hear, hear!”

Kaylee felt a little awkward saying it, but if she couldn’t say it with these women, she wouldn’t be able to say it to anyone on the planet. “I’ve never given a guy a blowjob.”

Maddy’s eyebrows jumped so high up her forehead that Kaylee imagined them flying off the girl’s head. “What? Get out of here!”

“No, I’m serious. How do you do it?”

Shannon was completely deadpan when she said, “You suck on his dick. Piece of cake.” She guzzled the rest of the wine in her glass.

Maddy said, “Well, maybe you do, but I avoid them as much as I can.”

Rachel’s expression changed to wide-eyed amusement. “You? Oh, sexual goddess, queen of the night?”

“Yes, me. You give a guy a BJ, they want them all the time. I’m sorry, but I’m not all about having his dong in my face all the time.” Shannon started laughing again, pouring more wine into her glass. “Seriously. Half the time, I’ll complain about my jaw. You know, I had to have my jaw operated on when I was a kid, and it was even wired shut for a month. I don’t want to go through that again.”

Rachel said, “Oh, my God, Maddy. I’m sorry. I didn’t even know that.”

An evil grin brightened Maddy’s face. “That’s because I’m full of shit. But a guy won’t call me on it, especially if I’m giving him a really good hand job while acting apologetic.”

Shannon took a sip of her freshly poured glass and said, “You don’t think it’s fun?”

“Hell, no. I gag trying to deep throat. No, thanks. And I’m sorry, but swallow? Fuck that. No way. It’s slimy and doesn’t taste good, and no matter what anyone tells you, it’s not good for your hair.”

“You can get past that, Maddy.”

“I don’t want to get past that.”

Shannon looked over at Kaylee. “And we’re not helping our poor friend at all.” She shifted in her position on the couch. “There’s really nothing to it. Sure, it’s as simple as sucking on a guy’s dick,” she said, looking at Maddy before returning her sights to Kaylee, “but there are techniques you can use to make it that much more enjoyable for your guy. I mean…you don’t just have to suck his whole length down your throat when you start, and that’s not the only trick up your sleeve. You can tease him and make it feel good without just pretending like you’re a vagina with teeth.”

Kaylee blushed but she wasn’t going to ask her to stop talking. Rachel joined in as well. “I like to kind of wrap one hand around the base, to kind of hold it steady. My other hand can do other things, like play with his balls or his asshole, if he’s into that, or run up his chest. But then I can let my mouth do whatever, you know, like trace up and down his length or circle the head. You can just suck the top in your mouth a little to tease. You don’t take him in hard until he can’t stand it anymore.”

“You can do even more with it too. You can lick it and then suck a little bit and then take it out of your mouth and tap it on your cheek.” Maddy burst into gales of laughter. Shannon said, “What?”

“You’ve watched way too many porn movies, girlfriend.”

“Hey, a lot of guys like it.”

“That’s just because you’re playing with their dick.”

  “Exactly.”

Rachel stood. “I can’t believe I’m giving my friend advice on how to pleasure my brother. That just sunk in.” She smiled. “I think I need to get a glass of water. Be back in a second.”

Kaylee felt the blush crawl up under her hairline and down her chest, but Rachel was right. She wanted the advice, because she cared enough about Blaze to want to try.

  Maddy cackled again. “Oops!”

Shannon leaned over, her voice low. “Seriously, Kaylee, you can’t go wrong. You have their dick in your mouth. They’re not gonna complain. Listen to your guy’s cues. You’ll know when to speed up what you’re doing. You’ll know if you’re on the right track. And if you’re not sure, ask. Ask what he likes. Nothing wrong with that.”

Well, there might not actually have been anything wrong with that, but Kaylee felt like she was as backward as they came. She had a lot of catching up to do, though, and she planned to get started as soon as possible.

  Chapter Nineteen

THE NEXT DAY, Kaylee was working at her new job. Rachel had helped her with a summer paycheck by putting in a good word for her friend at the coffee shop where she worked. She hadn’t been doing it for long, but Kaylee found she enjoyed working as a barista. As long as she could get people their coffee fast and it was accurate and tasted good, the customers felt like she’d done them a good deed.

Even though working for Professor Jones had been more her “thing,” the coffee shop was a nice summer fling. She’d have plenty of TA stuff to do when she returned in the fall.

When things slowed down late morning and she was able to take her break, she sat with a small mocha at a table in the back and texted Blaze. Hey. Would you mind if I stopped by after work today? Between 4 and 5? That would give her a chance to go home and quickly shower before changing into fresh clothes.

She didn’t expect an answer until later, but his response was almost immediate. Like you have to ask. Want me to make dinner?

Sure! She wasn’t going to tell him her surprise, though, that she planned to test out what her friends had told her the night before. Maybe she should have practiced on a banana or something. She’d seen girls do that in the movies. She grinned and looked down at the table, hoping no one saw her expression. If people only knew…

But she suspected she wasn’t the only person on the entire planet thinking about sex right this second, and that helped her feel better. In fact, it almost gave her the courage to go to YouTube on her phone to see if maybe there were videos on how to give the perfect BJ.

Almost. Kaylee wasn’t quite brave enough for that yet.

  * * *

When Kaylee got to Blaze’s apartment, she was even perkier than usual. She was being cute and bubbly, a side Blaze was becoming more and more familiar with. She didn’t show that side to everyone, so he was still getting used to it. He’d been chopping vegetables for a stir fry dish he was preparing for their dinner. When she got there, he opened the door, wanting to get back to the kitchen, but she asked, “Are we alone?”

Blaze grinned. “Yeah. Sam’s gone for the weekend.”

She snuggled up closer to him. “Then why don’t we wait a little while to eat?”

His smile faded and he kissed her. When she asked him like that, dinner could wait all night. “Let me just turn off the rice.”

She followed him to the kitchen and he flipped the burner under the rice off. He knew it would continue to cook on the hot stove. It was brown rice, so he knew it would take a while. He suspected what she had in mind, and he didn’t mind a little naked time together to build up
their appetites, and maybe by the time they were done, the rice would be close. “I have a little surprise for you.”

Yep, he’d been right. Her face was turned away from him and she glanced over her shoulder with a coy look on her face before she started prancing out of the kitchen. He hustled and followed her, wrapping his arms around her from behind, and they continued walking toward the bedroom. His lips were on her neck as he said, “Oh, you do?”

“Mmm-hmm.” Kaylee continued to amaze him, and while he didn’t expect her surprise to be a big deal to him, it was to her, and so he knew he would enjoy whatever it turned out to be. They were going to be in the bedroom, even though they didn’t really need to, considering Sam was gone for the weekend, but that told him it was going to be on the hot side, no matter what she was going to throw at him.

They had barely stepped in his bedroom and he was closing his door when she pressed up against his body, slamming into him. Hmm. He thought he could handle this side of Kaylee. God, he was growing hard already from her aggressive attention. She didn’t stop there, though. She grabbed his jaw with her hand and kissed him. Hard. Holy shit. He was sure she must have been wanting a rough quickie, because there was no way he’d be able to go for a long time with that kind of attention, even if he put a condom on.

Well, maybe he could make it a little longer if he wore a condom.

Her fingers were already on the bottom of his shirt, forcing it up to his chest. She was crazy. He loved it. Granted, they hadn’t been together the night before because the girls were having a goodbye night with Shannon, but it wasn’t like he and Kaylee had been apart for weeks. She was acting starved for him. He wasn’t complaining a bit, but he wondered what had inspired it. Why? Because he would love to duplicate it.

Instead, though, he knew he simply had to enjoy it while it was happening. His shirt was off and laying on the floor, and then he started unbuttoning the top of her blouse. “Unh-unh-unh,” she said, sing-songy, wrapping her hand around his. So…she wanted to be in control of the proceedings this afternoon. He could do that. He just hoped she’d give him plenty of cues so he’d know when he could move forward.
